Rewatching last year's games

Coach has had a pretty good track record with this OC in the past and really no way of knowing the events and nature of the relationship. But we sure needed a change after year 1 and dude was available. Maybe it takes him a year to adjust and I really hope that is a case based on last year but we did make a pretty deep run. Best case scenario is that they all put it together on offense, make another deep run without embarrassments, which unfortunately has turned into a problem under this regime.
I do think a year of consistency is better.
Learning curb was not just Grubb. CKD is still learning a painful lesson of Finesse vs Power. He has made progress, but also taken some lumps
You know, one can argue we didn’t have the horses. But, we had a RB drafted by the NFL along with 3 OL and 2 other OL signed UDFA contracts. And 2 other linemen transferred and are likely starters at P4 programs. It’s inexplicable what happened the last couple of years, but, I’m not sure we can say lack of talent was the issue. Probably more likely we didn’t use the talent correctly to fit their skill.
It’s year three under coach, let’s hope he has his type players in most positions. Roll Tide!
I'm far from impressed with Grubb so far. He was limited with no run game last year. That needs to change ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!
We definitely tried to run it... And we brought in consultants even well into the season. I'm afraid it just didn't happen. If we are marginal again this year I hope Grubbs gets his dream job and we can move on.
Tentatively, I do feel better. We have a solid group of 8-9 OL that look like the right bodies, a new OL coach, and the RBs could be better. I hope Deer, Crowell, and Brown (I think that is right) learn and then move up. I do think the other two guys, though having limitations, should benefit from experience.
I think it depends on how we're successful. If the offense improves some, but it is the defense that's carrying the team. Then Kane Wommack might be the one who is off to the races.
No doubt, if it lands him the opportunity to be a head coach at a power 5 school then he definitely needs to jump.
I'm watching the Bama-Whiskie game now. Wisconsin had a much better d-line and the Bama o-line had a tough time moving them.
Ty was on fire throwing the ball, so Grubb was not as committed to the running game as he might have been. Simpson had an extraordinary day passing the ball.
Worse than that if you ignore carries 16-21 when Wisky knew they were beat. I was at the game, and it was clear that they didn't want to be there anymore.
Even the students started to leave early. And about a nanosecond after the student body did Jump Around at the start of the 4th quarter, the student section was empty.
Watching the UGA game now. Bama's first two drives, both 14 plays, both ending in TDs.
1st drive: 6 runs, for 21 yards
2nd drive 6 running plays for 30 yards.
UGA has a better D-line than ULM or Whiskey and probably better than Fla State, but Grubb stayed committed to the run and it was working. Now, a healthy Ty Simpson is really good passing the ball, so that probably made Glenn Schumann's job tougher. My personal view is that runs in the 1st quarter pay dividends in the 4th quarter. A worn out defense cannot stop runs and Bama having the lead and the ball means bleeding time off the clock and salting the game away.
Ryan Williams had a heck of a sophomore slump. Dropping balls that hit him in the hands. And Herbstreit pointed out, on one Bama offensive play in which Williams was not going to get the ball, Williams did not block his man, whiffed completely on a block he could have made, which may speak to a player's effort. My advice to that young man would be to avoid reading his press clippings until he has been drafted by the NFL and is negotiating his contract. Then he can read his press clippings.

One thing that really struck me was that Coach Grubb called a much better game against UGA than against Fla State. A little bit tricky, more dedicated to the run (and effective at running).

Caught the 2018 NC game replay today.
The best part was post game when Coach Saban said "I've never been happier in my life!"
The reporter tried to bring up Coach Bryant's record and Coach Saban wasn't having any of it.
The way his voice started breaking up is so endearing to the passion the man carries in his heart.

I went back and watched this game specifically and what's amazing is how bad we beat them while still basically getting beat at the LOS. Just that fact is amazing. LOL!
I know most remember, but while Ty was healthy, we were a different team. We ran the ball a little better, but we basically won on the QB's talent. It was only after Ty couldn't throw the ball downfield that our running game totally dried up, as defenses knew our limitations.
I say this not to relitigate last year, but to remind us that when CKD has a healthy, dynamic QB and effective downfield passing offense, that'll cover a multitude of other sins, including not being an amazing running offense. IOW, we don't have to be anywhere near a 55/45 pass-to-run ratio offense like we were often under CNS.
If the OL and RB produce a decent running game this year and our starting QB verifies, we are off to the races and we will surprise a lot of teams, pundits and negative-minded Bama fans that don't believe we can win big under CKD.

I know a QB cannot play scared, but a QB who gets hurt harms the team so much that I wish our QBs would protect themselves by throwing the ball away or even taking a sack rather than risking serious injury. Tua was absolutely horrible in this area. I love Tua and am thankful for his heroics, but young man, sometimes the defense just wins, throw the ball into the stands, protect yourself, and punt. No shame in that. Now, if that happens every series, that is another matter, but taking a serious hit trying to salvage a bad play is not the answer. Both Tua (habitually) and Ty Simpson (against USCe last year) did this. Ty, in fact, was really stepping into his throw as an outside linebacker stunted right up the middle. Ty launched his body into a large guy running at him as fast as he could. And that hit was where the offensive decline started and the season started falling apart. It was a brave play on Ty's part, but sometimes discretion is the better part of valor.
Throw it away, protect yourself, punt, and live to play another down.
Yeah, that play Ty took the big hit on between the numbers totally changed the rest of the season. If he tucks the ball and takes the hit and sack instead of trying to throw it, he probably doesn't get injured. I respect that he tried to get it off. IMO, he was alot wiser than Tua regarding those kinds of plays.
Bringing up Tua is such an emotional roller coaster. The greatest play in Bama history, a walk-off pass for the NC, was generated by his inability to give up on the failed first down play. That was what caused 2nd and 26.
I guess I wouldn't trade that for nothing. But I'm sorry he never learned his lesson, as was evidenced against MSU and later in the NFL. I hope he takes advantage of his second chance in the NFL at Hotlanta this year!
