RFK, Jr.: Anti-vax HHS Secretary

It is a fair point to be made that the COVID vaccines ability to completely prevent infection has waned as the strains have mutated away from the original and we haven't kept up. But even though prevention rates are less than stellar, the protection against severe infection has been quite solid. A while back one of the updates estimated that 17 million hospital admissions had been averted. Not only a savings of major healthcare spending, but honestly, being in the hospital and being really sick sucks. And being on a ventilator is even worse if you are severely ill. This means months of follow up care and illness are also prevented as well. Protection from major events is still in the 80-90% range in most studies and is well worth it in the elderly, diabetics, and other chronically ill people.

bro science may not take to kindly to this

We already consume twice the protein we typically need. Plant and their fiber are very important and excess protein can increase the rates of chronic kidney disease. Ugh.

Funny thing is... There are some excellent statistics published out there that show school closures were one of the most effective methods for slowing COVID spread.

Of course, nobody seems to remember when the hospitals were stacked with people critically ill and dying in 2020 and 2021. I do though... It was bad. Greatest kudos to Huntsville Hospital for gearing up here and making it work, but we burned a ton of staff out and came close to being beyond our capacity to provide excellent care.

Not being prepared for Hanta which carries a 40% mortality for the Sin Nombre strain, and variably 25-40% for the Andes strain is more than concerning... Fortunately, neither seems likely to take off as an epidemic in terms of person to person contact.
