The generals getting killed in Ukraine have been mostly brigadiers and major generals (one and two-stars) mostly living in the provinces (where most of the army is based)
The generals plotting a coup would be four stars, connected inside Moscow.
But, yeah, whatever help they might need...
I thought General Gerasimov almost bought the farm and got wounded. He's no one or two star...

A fair point.
Reports of Gerasimov's wounding have been contradicted.
However, the former Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov said on Facebook , ... "Valery Gerasimov was wounded on the territory of Ukraine. He received a shrapnel wound to the right leg without a broken bone." Avakov was joking about it elsewhere in that Facebook post.
On the other hand, "Unfortunately, the information about the wounding of the Chief of Staff of the Russian Federation Gerasimov is not true. According to EaP sources, Ukrainian forces did not have time to" cover "Gerasimov near Izyum at the headquarters and he managed to evacuate. just to cover the Russian General Staff, "the statement said.

Now we seem to be making apologies for helping sink the Russian flagship.

We are supplying Ukraine with any kind of help we can offer to run Putin’s troops out of the country. Let’s not pretend we don’t intend to harm Russian generals or sink Russian battleships.

Putin started this fight, we are simply responding.

I agree - we shouldn't apologize, but we shouldn't publicize the extent of our involvement.

I saw an essay this morning that suggested we are doing more than we admit to in helping Ukraine, and that often times when the news is that we will be shipping a specific weapon to Ukraine, it’s already there.

I think we are going to find out what Putin will do when he’s been completely humiliated in Ukraine fairly soon. I expect the Ukrainians to really take it to them in the next few weeks.

Just think about what our military could do to Russia if the men who train and use these weapons all the time were in this war. I bet Putin may be thinking about it.

Its simply a diplomacy 'trick' providing us with plausible deniability.

I think you've hit on a real explanation. I think Putin is terrified at the thought of bringing in NATO boots on the ground, now that he knows the truth about his army. All he can do is rattle his nukes and quote Yeltsin - "Why do they not fear us?"

Where'd they find that 20-year old photo of him? :)

Ukrainian source.
I would love to interview Gerasimov right now.
"Did you advise the president that 190k soldiers was not enough to occupy Ukraine?"
"Did you tell him that the local population would reject Russian occupation?"
"Who told the president that Ukrainians would welcome Russian soldiers?"
"Is that person now in prison?"

Nobody is buying Putin's implausible deniability about not attacking civilians either, so what does it matter?
Le Pen is buying it.
Viktor Orban is buying it.
Some of die Linke are buying it.
There is a thread of European society (mostly on the extreme left and extreme right) that wants to believe that Russia is not a threat, that Russian troops are not the aggressors, etc.
Evidence and reason find little purchase in their minds, but they do believe what they believe.

Reuters has become my favorite news source over the last few years. Low production values, but straightforward reporting.

A bunch of advisors and generals, I understand, are in prison, disappeared or in house arrest, if they're lucky. Gerasimov, OTOH, is a free man. From that, I'd opine that he has managed to stay above the fray...

Le Pen's Putinism cost her the election. Otherwise, we'd have a very complicated European picture now. Orban is Orban and that was predictable. Dictators tend to flock together. I'm familiar with the right and left problem. At least here, it's just the extreme right...

Maybe.
My readings of Gerasimov lead me to believe he is not a stupid man (which was why I would have wagered a large some he advise against invading Ukraine to begin with).
"Success has a thousand fathers but failure is a bastard," so maybe Gerasimov succeeded in keeping his skirts clean in the run-up to invasion so he can now say, "I told you boss, this was not a good idea."
I have an English translation of Gerasimov's 2013 article from the Military Industrial Courier (VPK in Russian), in which he explains how future war will be conducted, if interested.

Yes, I am very interested. Also, I totally agree that Gerasimov is still free exactly because he advised against the Ukraine adventure...
