Saban is winning with Shula's recruits.....

I had really expected our year to be 2010, because of the particular folks we lose for '09. (This assumes that Andre' goes, because I believe that will happen.) Since there may be a slight letdown for next season, this makes this season's success even sweeter. When I heard the story about Saban knocking the ball out of Coffee's hands, while he was having to carry it all the time, because Coffee wasn't carrying it properly, I commented to my wife that Coach Bryant used to do the same thing. It sounds like a silly, punitive little drill, until you realize, as someone noted here the other day, that Coffee slips back into a faulty carry, when he gets excited. It's probably that he learned it wrong back in HS...
I was thinking 2010 might be "the year" too, because in 2009 we will be replacing 3 OL and a QB. But then, in 2010 we will be breaking in a new defense. Think about who we lose after 2009 on D: Washington, Cody, Deaderick (entire starting DL)....Reamer, Fanney and possibly McClain if he goes pro. Woodall, Arenas, Marquis Johnson and possibly Kareem if he goes pro early. The only guaranteed returning starters we have on D for 2010 are Hightower and Barron (assuming he takes over for Rashad next year.) So the moral to that story is, you're almost always going to be rebuilding some portion of your team. Whether that be the OL and QB in 2009 or the entire D in 2010...good coaches who bring in great talent find a way to get it done year after year. Looking at 2009, I think we may be stronger than you and I originally thought. We return all of our specialists on special teams (Fitz, Tiffin and Arenas). We return all of our three deep on D except for Rashad and Greenwood (Washington is likely an upgrade there anyway). So special teams and defense should be rock solid. On offense is where the concern comes in. We replace JPW with either GMac or Star. And then we likely have to rebuild the OL with only Davis and Johnson returning as starters. But we return almost all of our top skill players. All the RB's are back, plus you add in Richardson. All the top WR's are back a year older and smarter. We lose McCall and Walker at TE...but Peek may be better than both of them, and we have Underwood, Dial and Smelley waiting their turn as well. Then when you look at our SEC schedule in terms of possibly getting to ATL....things couldn't be set up much better for a young QB and gelling OL. We get Arkansas, UT, LSU and South Carolina at home. Our road games are at AU, UK, OM and MSU. We dodge both UGA and UF next year and get our toughest games at home. All that to say this....with the talent we have and are bringing in, combined with this coaching staff....I believe we will be in the SEC Title hunt EVERY year....and with a potentially dominating defense next year...I expect nothing different.

Cowherd discussed this yesterday on his show...He said that Shula got alot of (Deserved) blame for underacheving and not beating AU, but got no credit for getting alot of the players to the university that Saban is now winning with

Some fans will never believe or understand what went on or didn't go on during the Shula years. I am not saying that he was a bad guy by any means, but the football program was not heading in the right direction and it wasn't all because of probation. We could have been a much more competitive team throughout that entire era. The biggest thing Coach Saban has spent his time on the past 20 months is instilling discipline because there was none prior to his arrival.

Dry heat will sneak up and get you if you aren't careful. My first experience was right after I moved from Atlanta to Dallas. Since I was new to the southwest I thought my first adventure should be in the desert somewhere. So less than a month removed from the humidity of the Atl I headed to Sedona, AZ for a little hiking and a trip up to the GC. My first day on the trail, while hot, I made great time and thought it was great that to cool off all I had to do was step in the shade for just a few minutes. As noon passed I began to get cramps and no matter what I did I kept cramping up. In just a few hours without sweating a drop I had totally dehydrated myself. I learned the lesson and have since had some great trips all over the southwest.

We're winning football games again, I don't care who gets credit for it. Heck, I'm only taking credit for cheering week in and week out for our boys. To borrow an old adage:

Together
Everyone
Accomplishes
More

Sic 'em boys, let's beat Ole Miss.

People could have said that the 24-1 record during years two and three of Coach Stallings' tenure was achieved largely with Curry's recruits, but it's a moot point because neither Shula nor Curry could get that kind of performance out of the players.

Shula was a classmate and I'll never forget how good it was to be in the stands in Athens in '85, but if he were still HC we'd have been mired in mediocrity with the occasional "almost" 2005-style breakout season. There's just no excuse for a head coach at Alabama to have three non-winning seasons out of four.

I landed in Phoenix in Sept., 1979, going to kayak the Grand Canyon. It was 112 and it felt like a blast furnace. Friends picked me up and we drove down to her home in Tucson, where it was 115. In fact, it was 115 in the bottom of the GC, with water temps in the low 40s, so we had to wear wetsuits for the first several days, until the water warmed up as it went downstream. We took a day hike in Tapeats Creek, and, when we got back to our boats, I was wet under my daypack, but completely dry elsewhere. One of our friends who was on a support raft picked our campsite that night and placed us right by a big black rock outcropping. All night long, you could feel the heat from that rock beating against your skin...
Good point...

He may very well be doing that, but recruiting is only part of the equation that it takes to have a successful program. You could have handed Shula the best recruiting class in the nation, and we would still have drastically underachieved on the field. When you insist on having coaches like Dave Rader and Bob Connelly run your offense, you're simply not going to have a lot of success.

That's what I'm talkin' about

We finally have the QB that should have been starting from the beginning of the year, although between the hedges is NOT a real fun place for your first big start LOL

UGA still wins, prob by at least two TDs, but I at least have some hope for the future

OK, back to Saban/Shula

I don't remember recruiting ever being a problem with Shula. As a matter of fact, I always felt the one thing he did VERY well was recruit talent, especially considering the condition of the program.

It's been made apparent now that coaching, motivation and discipline were the problems with Shula, not recruiting.

Also, comparing the 'Saban with Shula recruits' to the 'Miles with Saban recruits' is comparing apples to oranges.

Miles took over an LSU program that had already been achieving amazing success on a consistent basis. Not so with Alabama.

Well, it seemed like a few of those Shula recruits had to get off the team before Saban could win with the rest...

As is being demonstrated, you need a combination of talent, character and coaching to produce a winning team.

I'll put it this way, Tubby is now getting those Shula type recruits. It's not the stars, it's which schools, specifically which coaches, are going after that player. Correct?

You can have a three star with offers from Auburn, Memphis, Mississipi State and Tulane, and a three with offers from Oklahoma, Bama, Georgia and Michigan. That's the biggest difference I've seen and learned. Our three star athletes are highly sought after athletes.

....... and Shula could not win with his own recruits . He had a decent 2005 season with frannies players . '05 was 3 FG's away from 5 losses :(

Look, I am not one of the board recruiting experts, but if Shula's recruiting classes were so great, why are we playing so many true freshmen this year? And, if we have to play so many true freshmen this year, how can Shula's recruiting classes be given credit for this season's success to date?

Shula did a pretty good job recruiting (considering the circumstances), but CNS has done an even better job. And guess what, CNS can also coach...

O.K. here's another way of looking at it.

Terry Bowden won his first 21 games at Auburn and everyone said.."he's playing with Pat Dye's recruits".
Exactly....the same one's that Dye went 10-12 in his last two years.

So it ain't who you inherit...it's what you do with them after you get them.

Sometimes only 1 or 2 guys make the difference. Remember how good we were in 2005 before Prothro went down? Remember how bad the oline got when Closner went down? We had problems with injuries and depth during Shula's tenure (not to mention the obvious probation). I'm glad Shula is gone, but I still respect what the man was able to do with what he had to work with at that time.
What exactly did he do? :conf2: What little success we had under his tenure was due mainly to Coach Kines and his defense.

As far as his recruiting, ANYBODY, and I mean ANYBODY, can get SOME good players to come to Alabama. Regardless of our enemies trying to portray us as being irrelevant during our recent problem years, our name still mattered to some recruits and it always will. Shula left the program in worse shape than when he took it over.
