I have HAD it. I say we all write intelligent & grammtically correct e-mails to Scarbinsky, telling him that he totally mis-read the meaning behind CNS' comment about 9/11, & that we're all totally disappointed in his most judgemental article. Then we should all write encouraging notes to the team & coaches to encourage them & to let them know that the MAJORITY of Alabama fans are pulling hard for them. (Send to the Athletic Department at UA - not to forums- these people don't have time to read forums!!!)
Perhaps, cancelled subscriptions with emails to the following would get better results. Scarbinsky deliberately twisted Coach Saban's comments.

This post may become lumped in the press conference thread - but for those not reading that thread - I wanted to try to get this out:

I am so irritated by that article in the Tuesday news. Scarbinsky is actually saying publically - that he believes that CNS compares football & the Alabama loss to 9/11, etc. Now BACK UP!

Saban simply used 9/11 type events as an analogy of how people "come together" after such trageic events. He was saying that he hopes that our players, in like manner, will unite in harmony after this devestating loss, rather than fall apart.

I know the media is judgemental and often inaccurate - but that was just wrong. PURE-OUT wrong.

I think this is the time to rally behind our team & coaches & show some respect for the University & encourage & help them at this time. For fans to defend CNS today & this week would be far more constructive than buying into the hype that the oh-so-athletic & perfect media people would have us do.

I agree that Scabinsky missed on this one. I listened to the conference this morning and it seemed obvious to me that Saban was simply saying that people's true character is revealed under the toughest circumstances. I am usually one who is very sensitive when it comes to references of this sort, but it seemed to be an obvious historical reference that revealed character and a change in how things were done. These guys just know that there are many fans who are disappointed right now, so they are doing what they do best- stirring the pot.

I am glad Saban is letting the players know what will be and won't be tolerated. I don't care if he sits the entire team and forfeits the game if that is necessary. He said that we will do things the right way. This is the way I coach, and I applaud him for demanding that his players do things the right way. We all want to win, but I am not willing to sacrifice doing things the right way just to win a few games. I want to win the right way. This is how championship programs that last are built.

When will they learn that not everyone likes the Jerry Springer / National Enquirer columns and the readers will more appreciate good and honest journalism. Where have all the good journalists gone? Who is teaching these journalists this slant in their culture?

We haven't heard the end of this stuff. It has now hit the AP wire:

Saban says 'Bama loss a 'catastrophic event'

The AP article includes this clarification from a "Saban spokesman":

"What Coach Saban said did not correlate losing a football game with tragedy; everyone needs to understand that. He was not equating losing football games to those catastrophic events," football spokesman Jeff Purington said in a statement to The Associated Press. "The message was that true spirit and unity become evident in the most difficult of times. Those were two tremendous examples that everyone can identify with."
Seems like no one with half a brain would need that clarification ... but there you have it.

I don't watch anything I say anymore. Everybody is offended by something these days. You can't win for losing so I say forget em'. If they have nothing better to do than sit around eating doritos, griping about global warming, and waiting to be offended then they are simply losers. It was an analogy. Those too ignorant (Scabs) or thin-skinned to see that are beyond help anyway.

Frankly, I've been relieved that the media has not made an issue of Saban's comments in the same presser about spanking his children with a belt.

Not that I have a problem with it at all ... it's just another of those politically incorrect things to talk about ... and the media is really having a ball kicking Coach Saban while he is down.

Alabama fans need to hunker down ... this is going to be a bumpy ride back to the top.

Here is Bama Mag - Kirk McNair's take on the article and the BN.

Defending Saban
I have said for years that Kevin Scarbinsky of The Birmingham News could be covering a cricket match in Addis Ababa and he’d find a way to slam Alabama football. I assume it is because he is trying to make a name for himself, and other than Alabama football there is nothing in his coverage area that rates high enough for him to target. Not Auburn. Not his alma mater, Troy. Nothing.

I think Scarbinsky and other media outlets for that matter, are using the 9/11 reference and the alcoholics reference to grab your attention. ABC33/40 went to a break saying something about Saban comparing his team to alcoholics last night. I had heard the press conf. and thought to myself, now that's garbage. They are going to blow the things he said out of proportion. But you know what...the things Saban said are so true. You only look up when you have some sort of crisis in your life and are forced to look up. I've drank the Kool-Aid and I'm ready for another glass!

our society today is honed into political correctness above all. this has been created by our wonderful media, that enjoys disasters more than good news. it will not end. i was over on the maryland terps board, and like said it is already a issue. saban comparing our loss to 9-11, and pearl harbor. by the same token, they are really exhibiting complete horror and sadness for sirhan searcy and the tragic accident that has taken as far as known three of his children, and his wife. i dont know the rest yet. killed they say by a drunk drive a state trooper.

Scarbinsky is an idiot, he can't tell the difference in an analogy and a direct comparison..............he's just a s^%t stirrer just like Finebaum, I watched the press conference and CNS is trying to light a fire under the team, either do it the right way or leave.....and I for one agree 1000%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Guys, there's a video clip on ESPN of a couple of their "analysts" discussing Coach Saban's remarks. You'd think he had desecrated the graves of 9/11 victims.

They think it was "unconscionable" ... they were "offended" ... they think UA's president should reprimand, censure, and perhaps fine Saban.

And as a snarky aside, they add that folks in Alabama probably won't be offended by it at all.

You know, I can see Saban's remarks maybe raising an eyebrow or two. But if these guys would learn to speak English as their first language, they would learn there is a big difference between analogy and comparison.

They jump right over that distinction and breathlessly exclaim that Saban was "equating" a football loss with the loss of life on 9/11.

Give me a break.

Yea, i'm watching College Football Live on ESPN now and that was their first story. They said that Saban would not be winning Coach of the Year. Then they got off on his analogy about 9/11 and Pearl Harbor. They was hammering him as usual. Then they got off on Les Miles and the Michigan thing, then added the at least Miles aint doing like Saban did last year with the Dolphins by saying " I aint' gonna be the coach at Alabama". Damn, i hate the media.

Bayou, I finished at Bama in December of 1992 (yes, it was a very good year) with a degree in communication. They didn't teach this crap. It isn't the journalism department that teaches this; it is the business department. They do what sells. They only want the ratings or numbers. It seems there are more and more ignorant people all the time, and shows like Springer and Finebaum let these people feel good because they see or hear other ignorant people ranting and raving. It's just good to be able to come here and discuss things with some intelligence and civility, at least most of the time. :BigA:

Thank goodness he didn't offend coonasses. We'd REALLY have ourselves a media meltdown then. Oh, wait....

See guys, there is a difference between "reporters" and "columnists." Reporters "report" the facts. What they see.

"Columnists," like Scabbysore, spout their opinions and exist more to keep floundering newspapers afloat through their carnival-barker tactics than anything else. Can anyone name the reporter who first broke the story today on skin cells being found to also double as stem cells? THAT is a pretty important story, but Scarbinsky? He's irrelevant. He gets paid chump change, makes no difference in the world whatsoever, but because his name is in print every day, he has a bloated opinion of himself and his worth to society.
