Agree Scarb's column is laughable ... pollitical correctness run amok ... mistaking an analogy for a comparison.
Perhaps, cancelled subscriptions with emails to the following would get better results. Scarbinsky deliberately twisted Coach Saban's comments.I have HAD it. I say we all write intelligent & grammtically correct e-mails to Scarbinsky, telling him that he totally mis-read the meaning behind CNS' comment about 9/11, & that we're all totally disappointed in his most judgemental article. Then we should all write encouraging notes to the team & coaches to encourage them & to let them know that the MAJORITY of Alabama fans are pulling hard for them. (Send to the Athletic Department at UA - not to forums- these people don't have time to read forums!!!)
I agree that Scabinsky missed on this one. I listened to the conference this morning and it seemed obvious to me that Saban was simply saying that people's true character is revealed under the toughest circumstances. I am usually one who is very sensitive when it comes to references of this sort, but it seemed to be an obvious historical reference that revealed character and a change in how things were done. These guys just know that there are many fans who are disappointed right now, so they are doing what they do best- stirring the pot. This post may become lumped in the press conference thread - but for those not reading that thread - I wanted to try to get this out:
I am so irritated by that article in the Tuesday news. Scarbinsky is actually saying publically - that he believes that CNS compares football & the Alabama loss to 9/11, etc. Now BACK UP!
Saban simply used 9/11 type events as an analogy of how people "come together" after such trageic events. He was saying that he hopes that our players, in like manner, will unite in harmony after this devestating loss, rather than fall apart.
I know the media is judgemental and often inaccurate - but that was just wrong. PURE-OUT wrong.
I think this is the time to rally behind our team & coaches & show some respect for the University & encourage & help them at this time. For fans to defend CNS today & this week would be far more constructive than buying into the hype that the oh-so-athletic & perfect media people would have us do.

Seems like no one with half a brain would need that clarification ... but there you have it."What Coach Saban said did not correlate losing a football game with tragedy; everyone needs to understand that. He was not equating losing football games to those catastrophic events," football spokesman Jeff Purington said in a statement to The Associated Press. "The message was that true spirit and unity become evident in the most difficult of times. Those were two tremendous examples that everyone can identify with."
I have said for years that Kevin Scarbinsky of The Birmingham News could be covering a cricket match in Addis Ababa and he’d find a way to slam Alabama football. I assume it is because he is trying to make a name for himself, and other than Alabama football there is nothing in his coverage area that rates high enough for him to target. Not Auburn. Not his alma mater, Troy. Nothing.
killed they say by a drunk drive a state trooper.
Guys, there's a video clip on ESPN of a couple of their "analysts" discussing Coach Saban's remarks. You'd think he had desecrated the graves of 9/11 victims.
They think it was "unconscionable" ... they were "offended" ... they think UA's president should reprimand, censure, and perhaps fine Saban.
And as a snarky aside, they add that folks in Alabama probably won't be offended by it at all.
You know, I can see Saban's remarks maybe raising an eyebrow or two. But if these guys would learn to speak English as their first language, they would learn there is a big difference between analogy and comparison.
They jump right over that distinction and breathlessly exclaim that Saban was "equating" a football loss with the loss of life on 9/11.
Give me a break.
The UA president should respond with a suggestion that they study more English grammar, especially the part about analogy and comparison. They think it was "unconscionable" ... they were "offended" ... they think UA's president should reprimand, censure, and perhaps fine Saban.
Bayou, I finished at Bama in December of 1992 (yes, it was a very good year) with a degree in communication. They didn't teach this crap. It isn't the journalism department that teaches this; it is the business department. They do what sells. They only want the ratings or numbers. It seems there are more and more ignorant people all the time, and shows like Springer and Finebaum let these people feel good because they see or hear other ignorant people ranting and raving. It's just good to be able to come here and discuss things with some intelligence and civility, at least most of the time. :BigA:When will they learn that not everyone likes the Jerry Springer / National Enquirer columns and the readers will more appreciate good and honest journalism. Where have all the good journalists gone? Who is teaching these journalists this slant in their culture?
