something I personally find telling, a full day afterwards, is that from what I hear the media is the only one howling over this. No one at work (in the land of sister- humper orange, no less) railed about it, no one shook their heads at me......nothing. The radio personalities did and that's it.

This is just futher proof of the downward spiral the country is in. I forget who it was who said it but we truly are the United States of Offended. I have no problem with what he said and if i did why should it matter. I choose to listen and I continued to listen after he said it and agian who cares. ESPN should stick to covering sporting news instead of making sporting news.

I would like someone to tell me something. I always thought of birmingham, huntsville, and mobile as bama towns and Montgomery an AU town. So why is there always so much negative in the B'ham news- why doesn't all the bama fans not buy the papers for a month to get these guys out of there? Or is there more Barners in B'ham than i thought.

I like Kevin and I understand how he makes his living - it's selling papers!

He writes to sell papers! So anything he can find to create a stir and write about it, it makes money for his employer who in turn rewards him with pay and raises etc. Let's not get to bent about what Kevin writes, he's just trying to make a living albeit at Coach Saban's expense at the moment. When something happens somewhere else next week, he'll write about that...so on and so on...

anyone that would get upset about Saban's comments either wasn't listening or has an agenda.
EXACTLY!!!

I got to read a little blurb in my local newspaper this morning here in Minnesota about CNS's comments. What a freaking joke that just ...... me off to no end.

I don't know when or why everyone started hating the U of A but it's quite obvious they do. And of course, they're going to go after CNS for anything.

I hope these two entities (UofA and CNS) will stay together long enough to show the rest of the nation what a force a strong Bama program can be.

There are way more Barners in Birmingham and all around than you thought. Over the last 10 years or so it is unbelievable how many casual fans of Alabama have switched over to Auburn. I personally know some lifelong Bama fans that have switched allegiances or that have become almost neutral and apathetic towards Bama. They say that is the case for many different reasons, some actually buy into and believe what the media is saying with the negative attacks on Bama. That is what is fueling this whole media mess. In my opinion the bitter hatred between the Barners and Bama fans is unhealthy and the state media plays on it big time.

Agree Scarb's column is laughable ... pollitical correctness run amok ... mistaking an analogy for a comparison.
Well technically.............

The definition of analogy is "drawing a comparison in order to show a similarity in some respect."

I'm not saying just saying.

I think this whole thing is blown out of proportion, but when you are in the public light you have to be careful what you say and how you say it.

Right ... the key being "in some respect." Any of us who have majored in something other than journalism know that an analogy says: A is to B as C is to D.

That's not the same as saying, "B" is a lot like "D". An analogy "compares" two things only in the exact sense specified in the analogy.

When Saban said that sometimes alcoholics have to hit rock bottom before they get serious about recovery ... he wasn't comparing his players to alcoholics ... or saying that quitting on a play or missing class is as bad as being a drunkard.

Maybe it's just me, but this all seems pretty obvious.

He probably should have said, if he was going to use the 9/11 analogy, "I'm not at all saying a loss in football is a tragedy like that ... not even close."

But he probably thought, as I said, that that was pretty obvious.

IOW... the analogy is valid only in the qualified context. Saban communicated the context of the analogy in the prior statements. He didn't explicitly state the context and exclude all other contexts and apparently journalists aren't intelligent enough to deduce that.

Of course, journalists like to take the words, disconnect them from their original context, apply the context that infers what the journalist wants to promulgate and then publish them. People like Scarbinsky, Gattis and Finebaum are analogous to website trolls: they write to antagonize and evoke reaction. There is little substance in what they write.
