Pybus is another prospect we should keep an eye on. He's slated to attend Junior Day. Check out the SPARQ rating in his profile, it's insane!!!!

Mash here

:eek2: Those numbers just don't make sense.

He definitely has the physical attributes to play LB, are his intangibles as good? You talk about making a name for yourself though. Almost seems like Brian Ulracher the LB with the Bears who played S in college as well as returned kicks. Just a physical specimen!

Atlanta Nike Combine produces new SPARQ record
Current Oregon State redshirt freshman Tom Hansen's SPARQ Rating record of 112.42 stood for nearly two years, until a 6-1, 200 pound linebacker from Alabama took down Hansen's mark at Saturday's NIKE Combine in Atlanta.

Spencer Pybus out of Dothan Northview High established a new all-time football SPARQ Rating of 114.05 on Saturday, on the strength of combine highs of 40.6 inches in the vertical jump and 39 reps on the bench press.

The Talent Level At Ozark!

The Talent Level At Ozark!
One of the most amazing performances of the day was turned in by a junior to be by the name of Spencer Pybus of Dothan Northview. Pybus is a linebacker who was injured for most of his sophomore season, but he has recovered. At the Ozark Combine, Pybus measured 6-0 ¼, 204, ran a 4.66 in the forty; did a 38 vertical jump; ran a 4.54 in the pro-agility shuttle; and did an incredible 34 reps on the 185 pound bench press. The 34 reps of 185 pound bench press was the best of the Combine.

In case anyone's wondering northview is about 60/40 barners. Spencer lived a couple blocks from me for about 6 years so I'll have to talk to him and see if I can do a little recruiting. roll tide.

Being able to bench 185 39 times is only worth so much on the football field...
if you've ever lifted weights you have to know how naturally strong a KID (he will be a junior in high school) has to be to be able to bench press 185 lbs, 39 times, that's insane and shows a tremendous amount of strength and muscle endurance.

Actually it shows you what he's capable of, and at his age like nivekstan said for him to be able to do that much it's pretty darn impressive. It lets you know that he's one very strong young man who once he gets on campus will only get that much stronger.

That's obvious. But it doesn't make him a better LB prospect than others alone.

Being a college LB is about way more than lifting weights so often that you manage to gain tremendous endurance with your explosion. It's about more than having powerful arm, back, and chest muscles.

Look at the old SPARQ record holder, with his 41 bench reps. Its an amazing weight lifting feat, but have you ever heard of Tom Hansen the LB?

i agree with your underlying point completely, weight room numbers alone do not make an all american linebacker. however, there is a reason why college athletics are divided into seperate divisions and some kids go on to play pro ball and others do not.
tom hansen is currently a kid who has enough talent that he is getting his college paid for and will get the opportunity to play d1 football in part because he is an outstanding athlete who put up amazing "umbers."
there are a ton of ball hawking, uncanny instincts, nose for the ball linebackers playing d2 and d3 ball and the reason is because their not strong enough or fast enough to make those plays at the d1 level.

Since Nick Saban's arrival he has leaned towards Alabama, even though he has grown up an Auburn fan (but so did I until I moved here).
This quote by someone claiming to be Spencer's brother, a student at UA, gives hope.

Young man looks to be an incredible athlete.
