Current Oregon State redshirt freshman Tom Hansen's SPARQ Rating record of 112.42 stood for nearly two years, until a 6-1, 200 pound linebacker from Alabama took down Hansen's mark at Saturday's NIKE Combine in Atlanta.
Spencer Pybus out of Dothan Northview High established a new all-time football SPARQ Rating of 114.05 on Saturday, on the strength of combine highs of 40.6 inches in the vertical jump and 39 reps on the bench press.
One of the most amazing performances of the day was turned in by a junior to be by the name of Spencer Pybus of Dothan Northview. Pybus is a linebacker who was injured for most of his sophomore season, but he has recovered. At the Ozark Combine, Pybus measured 6-0 ¼, 204, ran a 4.66 in the forty; did a 38 vertical jump; ran a 4.54 in the pro-agility shuttle; and did an incredible 34 reps on the 185 pound bench press. The 34 reps of 185 pound bench press was the best of the Combine.
google it....they have an official website.
Pybus broke the SPARQ record, btw.
if you've ever lifted weights you have to know how naturally strong a KID (he will be a junior in high school) has to be to be able to bench press 185 lbs, 39 times, that's insane and shows a tremendous amount of strength and muscle endurance.Being able to bench 185 39 times is only worth so much on the football field...
In case anyone's wondering northview is about 60/40 barners. Spencer lived a couple blocks from me for about 6 years so I'll have to talk to him and see if I can do a little recruiting. roll tide.

i agree with your underlying point completely, weight room numbers alone do not make an all american linebacker. however, there is a reason why college athletics are divided into seperate divisions and some kids go on to play pro ball and others do not. That's obvious. But it doesn't make him a better LB prospect than others alone.
Being a college LB is about way more than lifting weights so often that you manage to gain tremendous endurance with your explosion. It's about more than having powerful arm, back, and chest muscles.
Look at the old SPARQ record holder, with his 41 bench reps. Its an amazing weight lifting feat, but have you ever heard of Tom Hansen the LB?
I think he is a relative of a tidefans member or tidesports member, I cant remember which one it was!!!
This quote by someone claiming to be Spencer's brother, a student at UA, gives hope.Since Nick Saban's arrival he has leaned towards Alabama, even though he has grown up an Auburn fan (but so did I until I moved here).
