Nice article. I liked Zow and Watts both, so that QB battle was rough for me (that era was as well). Sounds like AZ has a positive approach to life, which is good to hear.

Maybe we should have a thread: Worst Coach in Alabama Crimson Tide history:
1. Mike DuBose (he should never have become the Head Coach)
2. Dennis Franchione (he should never have become the Head Coach)
3. Ears Whitworth (I'm really not sure what his problem was but what he did lead to having the Greatest Coach in history)
4. a tie with Ray Perkins, et al

There is probably justification for a tie for Worst Coach with #1 and #2 both being the WORST Ever!

Oh, I didn't respond to the thread title.

Andrew Zow could have become a great QB under a decent head coach. Sorry he had to play at a time when we had our WORST two coaches!

I also enjoyed reading the article.

Maybe one of his sons will play for Alabama. How old are his sons?

I liked both Zow and Watts.... Correct me if i'm wrong but Zow had a tendency to throw picks.. I remember being in the Watts camp, but always got excited when they put Zow in because of that arm! Coach Debose and Fran...dark days.

Mike Price at #5. Wait a minute, he never coached a game.

I remember Zow coming in against Florida and almost connecting on a pass that would have won the game when he was a freshman. I hate hearing some of the bone head decisions that were made during his playing days.
I was at that game. To the best of my memory, Phillips started and didn't do anything, Zow came in and did well, then Phillips was put back in. It was unbelievable to me.

Soldier, I was there, too. JD Phillips was sacked six straight times during the first two possessions. I've never seen a quarterback freeze up like that.

Andrew came in and it was like night and day. We were ridiculous underdogs but had a chance to win late. As I recall, John David never returned.

By the way, Andrew's performance in the Swamp in '99 is among the five best performances I've ever seen by an Alabama quarterback, and I'm getting up there in years.

My daughter, whose 25 now, on her first trip to Tuscaloosa, we ran into him in the Sheraton parking lot on Bryant Drive. I made her picture with him, framed it. She still has it today. He was a very kind young man and one of my favorite players.

Correct. That ended JDP's quarterbacking. I have a vague memory that they tried to retread him as a DB...

Well if we all will remember this is the time THE GOOD OLD BOY NETWORK was alive and well in t-town. I had friend who played on the 2000-2001-2002 team THAT HAVE TOLD ME THERE WAS A PROBLEM, you try not to think of it, and maybe it will go away. ZOW was better than WATTS. I never liked Watts, and know several acquaintances of his that really don't like him today...

I think that's correct. He was really a very good all-around athlete. He just wasn't an SEC QB...
My favorite JD Phillips memory was him trucking Aubie as the Tide ran out of the tunnel for the 96 Iron Bowl. It was glorious. If I remember correctly he was a DB and ST player his first two years too and then tried QB.

If I recall correctly didn't Zow come in for an injured Watts against auburn & Zow absolutely lit up The Barn's secondary..After the game, Tuberville was asked about the huge game Zow had against auburn & he said he wondered why Zow wasn't the starter instead of Watt's & said Fran should answer as to why Zow didn't play more than he did that year instead of Tyler Watts..I remember the statement made fRran look foolish & was a backhanded slap by Tuberville to Coach fRan..

Zow had the misfortune of playing for two head coaches who didn't have much use for him. I read his book a few years ago, and it had some decent tales in it. He said the first time he met Franchione, he was pulled aside and Fran basically told him he'd never see the field because he threw too many picks.

About three years ago, they had a throwing competition among former quarterbacks at halftime of the A-Day game. Zow was there and he still had an unbelievable cannon. Had forgotten how much pure arm strength the guy had. He was always one of my favorites and it seemed he was dealt a bad deck.
