Sugar Bowl getting stuck with Utah, Hawaii, Cincinnati types

Why? Why does the Sugar get stuck with these type opponents? So if Bama were to lose one game, we get to play the Utes.

I'm sorry, but that would be like having no bowl at all.

A Florida fan who's a coworker of mine and I were talking about the same thing. Either UA or UF would obliterate their Sugar bowl opponent if it's one of them (I've also seen Pittsburgh as a pick by some pundits). We both agreed it would be silly to pit them against either one of us.

I agree that it is a shame that these weak teams get into BCS Bowls. Last year people were saying Hawaii deserved a BCS Bowl game, Ga. proved that they did not belong on the field with the big boys. These teams need to EARN a BCS Bowl game and that is not done by going undefeated against very weak opponents week in and week out. I am afraid there are going to be some poor bowl games this year.

Well, I understand you're saying, but c'mon, it's still the Sugar Bowl.. That's a huge bowl for us to be in, regardless of who we are playing. We don't have any control over that, so.. oh well.

If Oregon St. wins out FoxSports was suggesting that USC would play the Loser of the SECCG. OSU wins out they go to the Rose. That would leave USC looking for an open bid to the BCS. :BigA:
No chance. USC would get picked up by the Fiesta, who chooses before the Sugar. And if they weren't, the Sugar still couldn't pick them, because at least one of the non-BCS teams will be a mandatory pick. The Sugar will be left with either the non-BCS team, whoever it is, or the Big East winner.

It's not just the Sugar Bowl getting screwed over...

Sure the Sugar Bowl got Hawai'i, but on the other hand the Fiesta Bowl got stuck with Boise State. And how happy do you think the Orange Bowl was with having Virginia Tech v. Kansas and Louisville v. Wake Forest?

I hate to say it, but the harsh truth of the matter is that the expansion of the BCS is going to result in some stinker match-ups like that.

Just remember, just like the site of the Title game moves from city to city so does the picking order. The Suger like the other BCS bowls move up and down according to the year and the rotation of the Title game. Suger wont always get messed over. Now having said that, you also must remember that the Suger only has ONE locked team. The other is an at large bid. The Rose gets TWO locked teams. They are always going to have a BCS vs BCS match up. An at large non-BCS, will NEVER go to the Rose...

I don't think the Fiesta was really crying about getting Boise State in what turned out to be one of the most entertaining BCS games in history.

The other games, though, you have a point.

It may have been entertaining, but how many Boise State fans made the trip, how long did they stay, and did they spend a lot of money while there.

I don't have exact numbers, but I do have the following:

The OU/Boise State Fiesta Bowl (The first one in the new stadium in Glendale) drew an attendance of 73,719. The National Championship game between Florida and Ohio State drew 74,628 the next week. The next year's actual Fiesta Bowl between Oklahoma (Coming the second year in a row) and West Virginia only drew 70,016.

I believe there was a good number of Boise fans at that game since it wasn't clear across the country (Which is what probably happened with the WVU fans, along with Rodriguez leaving the team).

The OU/Boise State Fiesta Bowl had a better rating than the WVU/OU Fiesta Bowl - 8.4 to 7.7. Granted, it didn't come close to the 12.9 Ohio State/Notre Dame did, which still looks to be one of the highest non-National Championship Fiesta Bowl ratings in history.

Agreed. THe BCS isnow set up to allow a few "little guys" in to hep shut them up about notgetting automatic bids. The bowls getting the last picks will end up with these teams. We just need to beat them soundly.

Not only that but the continued degression of the ACC and Big East makes it worse as long as they both have an automatic bid.

I doubt the bowl officials care where the fans come from as long as they fill the seats. You know the Sugar Bowl cringes when LSU plays because so many just go home after the game and don't spend their money in New Orleans.

I really dislike the attitude your team has to have some pedigree or belong to some Good Ol' Boy club to get a good bowl. Why not a undefeated BCS team over say a 7-5 Notre Dame or Ohio State kind of team. Bowl games used to be a reward to teams having a great season somewhere along the way the spirit of the Bowls and the expansion from a few bowls to 34 in 2008 took a wrong turn.
