The Church Thread: Chapter I Verse I

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

    Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

    if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I'm sorry...what?!?!?
Yeah, it was a long time ago, but I remember being at the gym and I walked past a dude from Ukraine of all places, just as he was raising his arms to grasp the chin-up bar. Holy stink in stereo, Batman! Dude smelled like a combination of green onions and hot garbage.

There were a couple of guys I played basketball with that no one wanted to guard. We swore that it was part of their strategy. Once, my wife commented she didn't know why I bothered with deodorant, since I had no body odor. I have some Cherokee and 85-90% of East Asians and Amerindians have dry ear wax and no body odor. (Only 2% of Europeans have the gene.) If you have wet ear wax, you have body odor. So I quit using deodorant. I have her check me occasionally. All I could think of when that happened was all the money I'd spent on the stuff and it all irritated my armpits...

Ugh, I remember a similar situation. We had a guy who was terrible at taking his practice clothes home to wash and after several days, you could smell him upwind. We didn't even want to tackle him anymore. The situation got so bad, even the coaches couldn't stand near him and that's when they finally intervened.

Current fiasco: Steven Lawson, noted Complementarian Calvinist, pastor in Dallas, mentor for The Master's Seminary and noted author, member of the Lignonier Ministry Board, etc., ad nauseam, has either resigned or been fired from all his positions due to a several years long affair being made public. All his books have been pulled by the publisher...he is in total disgrace. Here's a link if you want to read more:

Sexual lust is one of man's greatest weaknesses. It always has been and always will be on this side of heaven. I don't know too many men who could honestly say they've never struggled with lust at some point in their lives. A guy in a Bible study once told me he'd never struggled with any type of sin, ever. I asked him if after Bible study would he go to the graveyard and raise my grandparents from the dead. But if he didn't have time to do that would he mind turning my faucet water into wine. He didn't "get" what I was saying. LOL!

When I was in my 20’s I had a guy at church in his 80’s tell me he still struggles with lust. He said he couldn’t really do anything about it anymore but the thought was still there. 😂

The Synod on Synodality has kicked off in Rome this week and on Day 1, Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández - the Vatican's Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith - stated unabashedly that women will not and cannot receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. Pope Francis was explicitly clear on this issue back in June, but there had been some whispers of the topic being broached once again at this Synod. Cardinal Fernández nipped that conversation in the bud on the very first day.

Thoughts? This is consistent with church teaching as far back as I have looked, but I'm sure there is dissent around here and would be interested in a differing take.

What to know about the Los Angeles Catholic Church’s $880M settlement with sexual abuse victims

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has agreed to pay $880 million to hundreds of victims of clergy sexual abuse dating back decades.

The settlement with 1,353 people who allege that they were abused by local Catholic priests is the largest single child sex abuse settlement with a Catholic archdiocese, according to experts. The accusers were able to sue after California approved a law that opened a three-year window in 2020 for cases that exceeded the statute of limitations.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has previously paid $740 million to victims. With the settlement announced Wednesday, the total payout will be more than $1.5 billion.

GOOD!

Now prosecute the criminals.

Screwing children isn't disqualifying to males, but just being female is. Give up.

The earliest inscription declaring Jesus as God - deemed 'the greatest discovery since the Dead Sea Scrolls' - was uncovered beneath the floor of an Israeli prison and is now on display in America.

The 1,800-year-old mosaic, discovered by an inmate of the Megiddo prison, features the ancient Greek writing: 'The god-loving Akeptous has offered the table to God Jesus Christ as a memorial.'

The 581-square-foot mosaic decorated the world's first prayer hall in 230 AD, confirming Christians believed Jesus was the son of God from the very beginning.

The prayer below is by the Rt. Rev. Susan Goff, retired Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia
```````````````````````````````
I confess, Dear God,
that I cannot for the life of me
figure out how to pray for him.
He mocks your beloveds,
and seems to think that he is you.
I cannot for the life of me
figure out how to pray for him
whose god is power,
whose currency is cruelty.
I know, I know,
he is also your child,
made in your image.
I know, I know,
I have promised
to be faithful in prayer.
I know, I do know
what you want me to do.
I just don’t know how.
And I really, really don’t want to . . .
because his name tastes so sour on my lips.
Dear God, the best I can do right now
is to name this aversion.
The best I can do is to want to pray better.
Please hear this stumbling confession of mine.
Please make something of my willingness to try.
Please help me speak his name to you
until I can do it without flinching.
Because although I can’t for the life of me
figure out how to pray for him,
praying for him IS for the life of me
- and for the life of the world -
as much as it is for him.
Amen.
Bingo!
For years the Christian Right has been warning us about Godless hordes coming to destroy America and it turns out this was true—it's just that the words were autobiographical.
Matthew 24:24
For there shall arise false christs and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders, insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
