The most universally despised program in college football?

As several have said already this is something that runs in cycles depending on who is on top. I don't think there is any question Alabama is the most despised team in college football at this time. It's because we have been so dominant and because so many people outside our fanbase don't like CNS.

Also to keep in mind, although most "hated" teams are due to their success, others are due to a history of unsportsmanship like conduct. For example, Notre Dame is one of the most hated due to them historically being one of the greatest on the field, and thus the perception they get preferential treatment in TV coverage and the polls. This is a more "respected" hatred. Miami, however, is hated by many not only for their wins during the 80s/early 90s, but even more due to the outright thuggery the team had over those years. In fact, many of the "sportsmanship" rules in college football today are a direct result of their behavior on the field. And their off field behavior was even worse. Because of this, Miami is my most despised team.

Miami first for their thug-like image in the 80's - 90's. Second is Notre Dame because of all the undeserved attention this generation, and third is all the teams that play a nothing schedule and get all the media love. A good example of this is anybody in the Big 10 or ACC and all the non-qualifiers. Remember when Brigham Young "won" the NC?

I don't know but Notre Dame/Miami gets my vote as the most universally hated teams. Most college football fans don't even know Awbarn is located in Alabama most think that"cow pasture U" is in Georgia. Did I mention awbarn sucks.
Not sure if you are joking or serious, but you're right. Since I've moved here to STL, a lot of people here have no idea where Auburn is. I always try to give them the most honest answer possible...Georgia.

I would say Notre Dame is first because they admit and thrive on luck. It is easy to hate teams who are continually getting lucky. See 2013. Fortunately, 2014, not so lucky.
2nd - Miami. They are a bunch of cheats, thugs, no class, pompous, arrogant, selfish guys typically. Easy to hate them.
3rd - USC because they think LA is in heaven. They think they are better than every other school. See Lane Kiffin.

I'd say it is probably Notre Dame. They have had such a high profile, and get treated as so much more special than they really are, that everyone who isn't a fan got sick of it. I think Miami was, for a while. They were good, yes, but they were annoying, arrogant, had poor sportsmanship, and oh yeah... they violated NCAA rules during some of their best years. Texas so desperately wants to be the best at something, that I think they've been aiming for this, but only teams that were in their conference care enough to despise them.

Alabama made a valiant effort in recent years though...

I dont care who nd plays, I am always pulling for the other team. If the irish played the devil, I'd have to pull for the devil. To say I hate nd is an understatement.

Notre Dame. I was a Freshman at the University in '66. The banner at the next Alabama game after the Notre Dame-Michigan State tie that year is still imprinted in my brain: "Notre Dame Plays Politics. Alabama Plays Football. In Your Heart You Know We're Number 1." There's a pic
ture of that banner in the 1967 Corolla.

Taking a national perspective, as opposed to my personal opinion, I think there are two answers.

Most hated today? Alabama, and it isn't close. Every fan base and talking head (with the exceptions of Mark May and Kirk Herbstreit) have downplayed Alabama's accomplishments, reveled in our disappointments and overstated the odds of negative possibilities, beginning immediately after the UA / UTw BCSNCCG.

Historically, it's Notre Dame. Their fanbase is large and loyal. But most outside that base chafe mightily at the deference shown by talking heads, particularly those in television.

My personal experience is mixed. I have a friend who is a ND graduate, and you couldn't draw up a better person or classier fan. But in Miami, I ran into an inordinate number of loudmouth jerks, and this was from a cut of the base that could afford that sort of trip.

Everybody (yes, including Alabama) has those guys, but those choices in conduct don't happen in a vacuum, and typically preclude having that level of disposable income.

Bama ranks high because they are winners and always have been. Yes we have had some bad years but far less than most teams. I have seen the Yankees pop up in this thread and I despise them as much as anyone else, and my only reason is because they are winners. I can not stand there past success because I am not a fan of them so it is natural for me to pull against them any time they take the field. Same goes for Bama.

Notre Dame and Miami. A lot of people outside Alabama hated Auburn when Cam was there but that was probably only because of Cam. A lot of folks these days despise the LSU fanbase (not so much the team). They are the worst -- at the moment.

I am a Roman Catholic and I have never ever pulled for Notre Dame. There's not been any evidence of them being a Catholic university in some time. <spit>

Who is the team that fans of other programs love to hate and how high on that list would Bama rate?

Without very limited knowledge of college football I have little or no idea of who it would be. My reason for asking is that the most despised team is generally an indicator of success. If you take Manchester United in English soccer as an example they have more fans than anyone else in the English game, but if you polled the fans of the other clubs Manchester united would come out being easily the most hated due to their comparative success.

I know Bama don't like Auburn through the local rivalry, and the plastic paddies of Notre Dame are none to popular here for historical reasons, but if we took the Bama / Notre Dame NCG as an example would the majority of the neutrals have been hoping for a Tide or Fake Irish win?
Yes United a/k/a The Rags, a generally despised, especially by the blue half of Manchester (me included). One reason was that at the end of the game with extra time, it always seemed to be just long enough for the Rags to score a goal -- was known as Fergie Time. At least that's done with now.

As far as College Football it would have to be the Barn and ND.

My Dad and I say that a perfect day of football is when Alabama wins, Auburn loses and Notre Dame loses. Notre Dame still gets my vote for most despised because they don't have to play by the same rules as everyone else. They are independent and could walk into a BCS game despite having several losses. It wasn't until they'd lost several of those in a row that it wasn't automatically rewarded to them year after year. Quit being so high and mighty and join a conference...oh yeah...now they're going to somewhat join the ACC...whatever.

I used to think it was, in no order:

  1. Notre Dame (they were just the Golden Dome)
  2. Alabama (If I said I graduated from the Capstone, it's always been who did you pay to get that player)
  3. Ohio State (Might just be personnel, I didn't care for Haye's)
  4. Florida (Didn't care for the Visor & then they brought the Cry-Baby in)
  5. Southern Cal (didn't care for McKay then and didn't like him with the Buc's)
  6. Miami (everytime I saw 'em I thought back to 'nam)
  7. Michigan (To snooty for almost anyone who didn't go there)
  8. Texas (everything was bigger, I used to tell 'em yeah your women also, made 'em mad)
  9. Nebraska (Didn't like Osborne 7 don't care for pelican-man)
  10. Louisiana State (Hated Dietzel's Chinese Bandits now just don't care for less Les)
  1. Ohio State (good old suburban puts 'em on top)
  2. Notre Dame (Teo didn't help matters)
  3. Oregon (All that money usually breeds a little contempt)
  4. Most/All SEC Teams (except Vandy, UK, and Ark.)
  5. Southern Cal (same as the Duck's)
  6. Florida State (Things haven't changed since Warrick)
  7. Texas (same as the Duck's & Trojan's)
But now I tend to go with the one's in the 2nd group.
