Hard times have befallen the U.S. Postal Service. Mail deliveries are down and they are bleeding red, so they have asked the government to permit them to drop deliveries on Saturday.
Perhaps this makes sense to reduce operating costs. But, there should be some strings attached. The loss of Saturday delivery means we give up 17% of the service. It seems reasonable to expect the Postal employees to take a 17% cut in pay to adjust for fewer hours worked.
In keeping with the survival practices of private businesses, we should expect a significant layoff. Since the Postal Service is reporting a large drop in the mail volume, it stands to reason that they need to reduce headcount.
But, I forget; this is a government entity, so we are expected to accept the reduction in service while they do little or nothing to reduce their operating expenses.
