"Defensive back Ryan Smith (5-10 175) of LaPuente-Bishop Amat, Cal., who was named freshman All-America on Utah's undefeated team in 2004 under coach Urban Meyer, is transfering to Florida. Smith, who will graduate from Utah in two weeks, plans to attend graduate school at Florida and will be eligible to play for Meyer with the Gators in 2006 under a new NCAA rule that allows a player with eligibility left to transfer without having to redshirt if he has earned his degree. Smith redshirted as a freshman and played two years at Utah so he has two years of eligibility remaining. "

(I know this is perfectly legal according to the new NCAA rule, but does anyone really think that Urban Meyer has the player's best interest in mind here? First, it's text messaging, and now this. One thing is for sure though, Urban Meyer knows how to push the NCAA rules to the envelope. You gotta give Ryan Smith props though for being able to graduate with two year eligibility left.)

Don't know much about the kid but if he's good enough to play in the backfield for Fl. is a great move. Urban's not wasting time getting his team built. With his and M. Richt's recruiting, along with S. Spurrier's coaching Phat Fill better watch out. They could be third best just in their division each year.  BWAAAAAAAAA

Funny how he was against this rule until he foud out it could benefit him. Why not go after players that already know your system.

Well, he's gotta find someone to cover our receivers this year. Sure as hell couldn't do it last year. Lucky for him, he won't have to worry about Prothro.

Nice picture. I remember that play. Couldn't even see the ball Brodie threw it so hard and the next thing I knew Keith Brown was in the end zone with nothing but a trail of dust and coughing Gators in his well traveled path. Nice play.

Ur-vain doesn't need to get players from Utah, Florida's got more 5*'s than he can sign every year...
Tis true, however, they are very thin and inexperienced at a number of positions. One of those positions just happens to be at cornerback.

What makes this all the more interesting about Urbie's about face is the events leading up to Smith's, the transfer, announcement. Avery Atkins was penciled in to be one of the starting corners coming into the spring. He was one of Urbie's gems from his first recruiting class. Problems started to surface in the spring and he went home to take care of "some family business." Turns out the family business was he had fathered a child with a chick in Daytona. On June 17th, said chick filed a police report with the Daytona police that Avery had hit her in the face something like 13 times. At this point he was suspended indefinitely from UF. Now there were already rumblings at this point that he wanted to transfer but Urbie would not grant him his release. Said the family wanted him to stay at Florida and didn't want Urbie to grant his transfer wishes.

Soooo, on June 29th Urbie granted his release from the UF program. On July 3rd it is announced that Smith is transferring to UF where he will most likely be an immediate starter where? You got it---cornerback.

Now I know what you're thinking but that can't be true can it? ;) It imust be pure, unadulterated, coincidence.:eek2:

Bending the rules? Fulmer will handle the situation. Kinda like the sherriff in Smokey and the Bandit.

I think it's amusing reading this thread and and remembering that Coach Bryant was probably responsible for for more than a few nCaa rules himself....... Tear away jerseys come to mind, footbal dorms, summer practice etc.......He was just innovative enough to recognize a good idea and exploit it until it was "decided" to be against the rules.
I don't blame Urban he's being smart using the nCaa's rules to his advantage is just doing what he was hired for.

The rumor is that Urban has invented a few infractions to tell the NCAA on us. Same with LSU; and, all the other boards seem to have something about it on there.

Bat, did you know that CPB was in a way

responsible for tackle eligible being done away with in college football? The story I'd heard was that the year before it was eliminated in CFB, Coach Bryant had used a tackle eligible against Ole Miss, with Bama eventually winning the game. Story has it, Coach Vaught was so livid that a trick play had been instrumental in beating Ole Miss that he made a special trip to NCAA headquarters when the rules committee was meeting, stormed into the meeting and basically told them they were not leaving that room until the tackle eligible rule was changed.

I can't remember where I'd read that. As far as CUM using the rules to his advantage, I have no problem with that. He isn't "stealing" anything.

i'm curious about something regarding this rule. currently, a coach at one school cannot "recruit" a player currently attending another school. however, i'm not sure this covers recruiting a graduate-level student from choosing where to take those classes. meaning, what's to stop a coach from approaching a player and telling them that if they focused on their studies (even redshirting so that they could spend more time with the books), they could graduate and transfer to MY school to earn your post-grad degree... and, btw, maybe play some ball for us with those extra years of eligibility... ;)

anybody know if this is covered? i'd HOPE so, but considering its a new rule, i wouldn't be surprised if some loopholes still remain. i'm not trying to imply that's what happened in this case, just a general observation.

I don't see the problem with UM taking advantage of the new rule, even if he is against it. A lot of coaches are against the instant replay challange rule that will be implimented but I doubt they will refrain from usuing it if the ref misses a crucial call.

My understanding is that a lot of the coaches have complained about the rule and it may be reversed as of next year.

Don't know that I can fairly comment on the AA situation as I have no way to verify any of the information coming out. I don't necessarily have a problem with UM denying the transfer early on (assuming that he was not charged), allowing all involved to settle down and make more informed decisions. While I am glad that we appear to be able to get the transfer, it is definitley a step or two down. I don't know that we offer him if we were not in a bind, and had time to train up the incoming recruits. Had AA stayed, that position would be much stronger but it is hard to say what the cost would be in terms of perception, recruiting, team unity, etc...
