Voting discussion thread

It is not and yes I do. Thankfully, ignorance is curable. To put it another way, "Even stupidity has a certain charm; ignorance does not." -Frank Zappa

And before anybody gets his shorts in a knot re: constitutional rights, I'll remind all that 2A is the law of the land, but we infringe on it all the time and for good reasons. Why should voting be any different? One cannot be an absolutist on a part-time basis. It just doesn't work that way.
Because the 2 things are not comparable. You could shoot one or many people with a gun. One vote cannot cause massive amounts of harm. Also, just history of this country and voter suppression. It would be extremely easy to weaponize any sort of test.

To be frank it is a terrible and dangerous idea.

Actually, people are absolutist on one issue or another all the the time, without being so on all issues. It does indeed work that way...

I have my doubts about the AC video. I suspect she posted the video for the clicks on her TikTok page. I bet she does other “dumb blonde” videos. Yes, there are stupid people out there but still.

A Shocking Betrayal of Black Americans

...
Millions of Americans like Ms. Chism live in states where Republicans are drawing maps that dilute the power of Black voters and those who share their interests. Just on Tuesday, the Supreme Court allowed Alabama to eliminate one of only two Black-majority districts. By the fall elections, and almost certainly by the next presidential election, new maps will be in place.

A Supreme Court decision in April severely weakened the Voting Rights Act by allowing political parties to gerrymander voting districts for partisan advantage, no matter the effect on Black voters. The effort to destroy Black political power in the South is among the greatest betrayals of Black Americans, and those who have voted alongside them, by the federal government in living memory. It will have far-reaching consequences for all Americans and for our democracy. Despite this, the work of mobilizing a response is largely falling to Black people.

but i was assured this was just restoring “fairness” to our “broken” electoral system/s

and for the record, this is what i was referring to

“The Supreme Court’s decision Louisiana v. Callais restores fairness to our redistricting process and allows states to pass electoral maps that reflect the will of the voters, not the will of federal judges,” Kemp said in a statement. “Voting is already underway for the 2026 elections, but it’s clear that Callais requires Georgia to adopt new electoral maps before the 2028 election cycle.”

Oh, I don’t need to shout it. It’s the law, thankfully, so I’m good.

If we can end gerrymandering things will be right.
So how do we find 435,000 people per district without gerrymandering? The easiest way would be to start from all the population centers and work outward. But the Republicans wont agree to that. If we are just going off number of people regardless of the socio-economic-political-racial profiles then you have successfully drawn the districts in an apolitical way.

Removing racism? All for it.
Not a single ounce of racism has been removed.

It has just shifted from trying to lift minorities to more suppression by the majority. I would say that what Alabama is doing is far more racist than the federally drawn map. The white conservative majority controlled 5 of the 7 districts; now they will control 6 of 7 again.

I will not be surprised to see a new map by 2028 that attempts to give them all 7 districts. Why not take a shot with this minority hating SCOTUS?

you have to admit, the gaslighting is quite impressive though

You can couch it however you wish, but any district drawn in order to represent one race over another is racist. You can argue whether it's beneficial or not, but it is literally racist.

And this is why I want ALL gerrymandering outlawed.

The problem is any drawing can be alleged racist. Even if you draw the lines with considering race a racial profile will emerge and the politicians will render it so.
