If a company is loyal to its workers, the workers will be loyal to the company. When the company treats us like pond scum from day one, they won't get the best from us.

Management has been waging class warfare against the working class since the Civil War. Republicans are their handmaidens, and Democrats are too wishy-washy to stand up for us. It's up to the unions to protect us.

And anyone who tells you individual workers and their bosses bargain on equal playing fields is lying to you.

I would submit it is everyones responsibility to give their best every day. Period.

Anyone that thinks unions are a good thing

to this day only need to look at western Europe and see all the "good" they've done there. Unions are the main reason that their economies are stagnant. Unions have put a strangle hold on industry and until the majority of workers realize this, they're doomed to large scale unemployment.

And, Boiler, I hate to break it to you but when you file for bankruptcy as a corporation, the books are closely scrutinzed before a judge allows a company to be granted protection. Management can't arbitrarily "make up numbers" in that situation. The fact is, it's been proven that US Air is hanging by a thread financially and these idiot pilots would rather take a hard line and be out of job and make NO money than take a pay cut and still have a job. Moreover, there are stronger laws on the books now to prevent the books from being cooked. That's not to say that it will never happen again but in the aftermath of Enron, I'd say it's somewhat unlikely unless your CEO is nuts.

It is the weakening of unions, not their existence that has weakened the American workplace and screwed the workers. Maybe if US Air lopped a couple million off of the CEO's pay instead of asking pilots to work for free, they'd stay airborne.

THIS is the Super Bowl ad I want to see:

When your house was burning, I pulled you out
When you were sick in bed, I cared for you
When you needed directions, I pointed the way
I built your car and made sure it was safe
I stock the food you eat and ring you up when you check out
I build the buildings you work in
I clean the floors and maintain the halls of those buildings
I process your claims and file your records
I teach your children science and math
I haul your garbage and recycle your waste
I make the movies you watch...I write them
I keep your government running on budget and on time

We are organized labor, when America needs us, we're there for her...

We're your neighbors, your uncles, your sisters, your friends, your colleagues, your fellow citizens.

We're 16 million strong and growing. We're proud to be American and we love this country.

One reason (IMO) that WalMart is singled out for attack regarding imported goods is that for years WalMart marketed itself as the Buy America store. You'd go in and they'd have signs trumpeting that Product X provided Y American jobs.

Does that mean that WalMart was wrong to change its business practices? Of course not. As others have noted, the bottom line is to make money. But before Sam Walton died, that was not WalMart's only goal.

Piglet,
Growing? The union workforce has shrunk dramatically since its heyday of the '50's. Do yourself a favor and the next time you go down to shoot pool at your local remind your "brothers and sisters" that John Sweeney, Rich Trumpka, Gerald McEntee, James Hoffa, and your other leaders are the reason you are where you are today. They need to get out of bed with the democratic party and their radical left wing, anti-family agenda and maybe you guys would make some progress, like getting union votes at all of the new auto plants cropping up in the South. Your union dues are doing nothing but financing lavish life styles for these union fat cats. Wake up!!

And do what? Go to bed with the handmaidens of big corporate management in the GOP? Man, we'd get our throats cut the first night! You seriously gonna look at the lifestyles of Ken Lay and Dick Skelling and tell me you think union leaders are high on the hog?
