Is Thompson a private school? I can't imagine a HS coach pulling $100k/year!
The local 1% sales tax has built an incredible new high school and athletics facilities. Thompson football went 0-10 just a few years ago and they went after the best coach they could get to go along with the capital purchases. I suppose $100k+ is the going rate for coaches that can take your program from winless to the state title game quickly.

Well that didn't turn out like I expected. I knew Central was good, but didn't realize their defense was that good.

Yep... When you talk about consistent winners in big high schools with a decent tax base you are talking about giant subsidies to induce those coaches. They pay for performance.
BTW: These High Schools have very good assistant coaches too.
Top facilities is another inducement to help draw top coaches.

Dare I call em FOOTBALL FACTORIES. Sounds bad, but if you have a son who is a very good football player, folks have a way of moving into one of the top football schools areas.
These are the top athletes every coach worth his salt recruits to come to their University.
Guess this is one of the reasons football is so big in Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Texas...

Just got home from the game and I am shocked and disappointed at the outcome. That said, what others have stated in the thread is true... Thompson made an investment in a great coach, who turned the program around quickly, and the impact is felt throughout the school and the community.

Which makes it surprising to me that some here are critical of the approach. A decade or so back, I know of a major university in this state that made what seemed like an insane investment in a great coach who turned the football program around, and the impact was felt in all aspects of the school... sound familiar? There's a reason Dr. Witt said Saban was the most important hire. As someone who got to see the impact football success had on the academic side at Bama firsthand, I agree with Dr. Witt.

At Thompson, the athletic facilities are indeed impressive and the coach is indeed well compensated. But wow, you should see the rest of the school. It rivals many small colleges inside and out. I've personally been involved in the new Performing Arts Center there, which is one of the best venues in Central Alabama and houses the world's largest, best and most expensive concert piano in production. The whole school is impressive. It is not a "football factory."

We can argue that football success SHOULDN'T have that kind of impact. I don't necessarily like it. But if you know that's the case, especially where we live, you attempt to play that game expertly, just like Alabama did, if you can afford to.

Mrs. Dub is a Thompson alum. She's going to bed mad lol. Probably best I join her lest I end up in the doghouse.
It was painful. My son was just crushed. I told him that it's healthy to be on the other side of something like that sometimes, and know what Bama's opponents often feel like... That brought a smile to his face. :)

I don't know about Alabama but in Ga the state sets the base salary for teachers. Each county or city can add to that to draw better teachers or help with cost of living. Some do some don't. But a lot of schools booster clubs subsidize coaches salaries and that is how they make 100k plus.

Private, voluntary donors is different than raising the local tax.

Apparently Taulia was injured in the Hoover game (shoulder) and could not practice all week. He gave it what he had, but it was not meant to be.
