Link: Wednesday Thoughts On OL Room

I'm not understanding why people wants former players to come back to Alabama to coach. If anything I don't want Vlachos to come back. He needs to go somewhere and continue to grow as a coach at a schools other than Alabama.
So, as an assistant to the Offensive Line Coach I believe he could be of use. Kid was on campus when Nick arrived and nothing Nick could recruit could beat him out of the job as center. He has coached around since 2018 and not just slopping around - Bama, Bills, Colorado, Central and Western Meatchicken, ole sis and now the u. As a younger, overachieving former player I believe he would be an outstanding addition for the new OLIne coach. I want former players around the program that can relate to young players and be representative of what this program is all about. If they want to go after 2 OLIne coaches and split duties then fine. But if you need an assistant to your OLine coach then I could not think of anyone better. JMHO

Dang, dude basically raked hot coals over Grubb. I can say this. It gives me confidence that DeBoer recognized enough to fire the OL coach and be very active with the OL in the portal. It lets me know hes not coaching with blinders, like Shula.

Now, Grubb is another story. Has he learned enough to look at himself and make changes to how he does things? Or does he think he has nothing to do with the problem.

I don't think He will be that stubborn. Fix the OL and rest will come. When you take away the gimmick plays we saw throughout the season, Grubb has put the offense in good position so many times, and we constantly saw dropped passes, or OL just failed to protect QB. I don't think Grubb will be that stubborn. Offense will change once again, because it's tailored to QB every year, and so they will run offense to QB's strength.

It is hard to really sort out where the blame should be assigned for the offense.

But it all started with the OL playing terribly. The RBs didn't block well and showed amazing vision in being able to quickly step away from the hole and into a lineman. The WRs had the dropsies at times and needed to be more physical. TE was solid but injury laden or very young. QB was solid but gun shy after getting the crap smacked out of them.

Fix that OL and I think the other issues will all decrease significantly.

I mean, I was and still am one of Grubbs biggest critics….but out of all things, this is not something we can point to as concrete evidence he’s the problem.

I mean, Sam Darnold rehabilitated his career in Minnesota, and Kevin O’Connell may regret his decision to let Darnold go in favor of J.J. McCarthy for years to come.

He has only continued to grow into a great QB everyone thought he was out of S.C., the farther he gets away from the Jets organization.

If Grubb would have had Darnold last season, a valid point could have been made. But this really proves nothing other than the Seahawks upgraded at QB big time from Geno Smith to Sam Darnold.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of Grubb yet, but I also don't think it's fair to pin all the blame on Seattle on him when they also moved from Smith to Darnold.

I dont think he's "the" problem but he showed enough to know that he's got plenty of room to improve with his playcalling and gameplanning. If there were an award for "best drive killer" he would have won it going away. I cant count the times we'd be driving and stacking positive plays only to have Grubb start calling plays like a 12 year old on a video game.

And that fact isn’t even addressed in the article, he just piles on Grubb.

Let's see.....

- 2023, Grubb at Washington had the Joe Moore Award winning OL along with a 1st round draft pick QB and 4 NFL draft WRs....which allowed a RB to get over a 1000 yards.

- 2023, Saban tried to acquire Grubb to be the OC at Bama.

- 2024, Grubb at Seattle had Geno Smith at QB.
- 2025, Seattle has Sam Darnold at QB. They upgraded.

- 2025, Grubb at Bama had one of the worst OLs in program history with a WR corps that had a bad case of the drops most of the season....with a RB room that looked lost as well.

Pretty much it!

What we know for sure is that he will inevitably stall at least one drive with a trick play that will have you throwing your remote at the dog!

The rest is still up for debate.

I think it's great to hire former players as coaches as long as they're good at coaching. I haven't kept up with Vlachos since he left Bama, but if he coaches as good, and as hard as he played, he could be a great asset.

He was a good one. That '09 line and the '11 line were some of the best, and he was an anchor for them. The 2012 line was probably the best of all Saban's O-lines.
