Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

Honestly, I have no idea. I think the natural tendency is to think they'll look at teams from the ACC, maybe FSU, Clemson, GT, etc., but I also think others like Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia Tech, and Virginia could be in play.

I don't think Texas or Oklahoma will be in play. Not sure that I want them either way. I'm hoping Texas A&M will be.

Texas A&M and Virginia Tech would be my top 2 choices if the limit is 14 teams, North Carolina and Duke as well if we're going to 16.

I notice you don't have any teams currently in the SEC leaving. The fact is no other conference can afford or entice ANY SEC team away from the SEC.

This conference doesn't HAVE to stand pat but unless the object of it's affections is particularly attractive it should stand pat.

Looks like AtM for sure, then maybe one or three ACC teams. No way Texas comes to SEC, would be stupid, the Cal market to great to turn down.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

I like the idea of going East instead of West. Add a North Carolina, Duke, Virginia Tech, and Virginia or a Clemson.

That is just my list. While Texas and A&M would be great I don't see both in play. Maybe one (A&M). If that becomes the case, remove one of the ones from above (Virginia or Clemson). Get NC and Duke for the basketball.

West: Bama, auburn, State, Ole Miss, LSU, Kentucky, Vandy (or A&M if they were to come on) and Arkansas

East: Georgia, Florida, Duke, North Carolina, South Carolina, utk, VA Tech, Virginia (or Clemson or Vandy if A&M comes on board).

Just my thoughts.........

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

I could see the SEC adding two teams but I don't see either of those being a Texas or Oklahoma. I've heard that market expansion will be the main reason for adding any teams to the SEC so you'd have to look at that in terms of what some of them bring.

My guess would be either a team like VaTech, NC, or possibly FSU and although I like FSU and think they'd be good fit, I don't really know what the SEC would gain in taking them. Plus I doubt UF wants them either. Clemson might be another option but again, are they really bringing anything from a tv/marketing standpoint?
I guessing another team in play would be TAMU or possibly Mizzou.
OU's athletic director stated today OU will follow Texas in whatever they do which pretty much kills any talk of getting them. Texas is not showing any interest in the SEC.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

Why would the SEC consider adding Duke? We have our Vandy and given our academic situation being as good as it is; we certainly don't need another mediocre program with a stadium (regardless of who coached there) that holds 52,000 in the SEC!

We should go after Texas A&M and Clemson and simply be a 14 team league. It won't juggle things too much and frankly 16 team leagues will be very messy given the fact that you can't play more than 13 games in a year INCLUDING a league championship. Therefore you're almost faced with having to lose several schools for 4 year stretches and that's hard. I'm not sure how much better it would be going to 14! The PAC 10 seemingly wants to monopolize football outside of the SEC and they just don't have the horses to do it regardless of who they add (IMHO)!

I am only suggesting Duke in terms of basketball. I understand the comparison for Vandy and the mediocre program. Don't add Duke....go with a Clemson....go with a Virginia.....doesn't matter to me. I just like the idea of having them in the conference for basketball reasons. That is my 16 team scenario.

If only 14 then go after A&M and Va Tech.

My only disappointment in adding A&M is that fRan is no longer the coach and I would have loved to play A&M with him as the HC just once at home.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

I have heard that "market" expansion is what would drive SEC expansion, but I just don't see it. We just bnegotiated our Deals with ESPN and CBS. They are already national. Perhaps I am wrong, but our payouts are not based on ratings or markets. Maybe with bigger markets we could renegotiate, but that seems speculative unless there is already an escalator clause.

That being said, expansion of the SEC would seem to hinge on other areas of revenue production. I could see the SEC adding quality football schools with extraordinary basketball prgrams (Kansas, Louisville, UNC). I just don't see home run additions from the football world happening (Texas, Oklahoma). Clemson and Georgia Tech are good fits, but we don't need another Arkansas and South Carolina. There would be no rush to add 2 or four schools immediately unless they were home runs. A package consisting of OU, Texas, Texas A&M and some other western school would seem to be a home run that would make sense to do right now, but I just don't see it happening. But then again, I never thought that Coach Moore would convince Nick Saban to coach the Tide. I was happily wrong about that, maybe I'll be happily wrong about this as well.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

There aren't many ACC schools that have the fanbase/market base to even be considered. Every time someone promotes an ACC school I picture an empty stadium for their championship game.

For the time being I'm guessing that unless there are an even number of absolute plums available the SEC will be a twelve team conference.

Yes, you're wrong. The contract value will go up in proportion to expected new viewship if the conference expands. The contract already has a provision for renegotiation if more teams are added.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

Kirk Herbstreet just said on ESPN that everyone needs to remember, the SEC is still the best of the best and all this moving around is not going to change it. Kudos for Kirk. He may be an Ohio State guy, but he is still the best at calling it the way it is.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

I think the SEC is wise in taking their time in deciding what needs to be done with possible expansion. It looks like Texas and Texas A&M are headed to the PAC 10. If we should expand, I would like to see them become a part of the SEC. But, even closer, Clemson, Florida State, and Georgia Tech might be a better fit. If Notre Dame goes anywhere, my guess would be to the big 10 (geographically, it makes the most sense).

With all this moving around and the big 12 apparently falling apart, there are certain to be some schools that regret their moves. Time is on our side in this case; no need to rush into anything just because some of the other conferences are in panic mode.

Wow. I thought this was the slow season for college football.

It doesn't look like any of the ex-Big 12 schools are coming, but hopefully Coach Stallings can help out with aTm.

ESPN is reporting that Texas and Texas A&M are now in talks with the intent of both schools going together to the same conference. If this happens, it is looking more like PAC 10.

Seems that things have changed for TX and A&M. They are now looking hard at the Big 10, which makes more sense if they don't join us. Still, Oklahoma and OSU would be great additions.

I have no idea what's going on. But, if the PAC-10 and BIG-11 both go to 16, I have to think that the SEC will too.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

Obviously, our #1 is Texas, but they may not want to come or require too much baggage for us to accept them.

I think that our #2 choice should be UNC. A great bball school, a football team on the rise with a good coach, and a large fan base with Charlotte. Would they come? Who knows.

Re: What action will SEC take in conference expansion?

Slive will do what's best for the conference. If I were the one making the decision, I would stay in the Southeast and go after Florida St, Miami, Clemson, and maybe North Carolina. I don't want Ga Tech for reasons the older guys will understand.
