The glaring thing there to me isn’t the offensive performance (though that wasn’t stellar).

What stands out to me is 3 possessions the whole second half. That’s a function of the D not being able to get off the field and Florida mounting drives consuming clock and totaling double digits in plays.
Yeah there were several issues that caused that imo.

1) If the D wasn't gassed after the 1st long drive of the 2nd half, then they definitely were after the 2nd one. After the Gators went 99 yards the D was absolutely Spent/Toast and I said so live in the game thread. They had almost no chance at this point in that Humidity.

2) The D was also confused about assignments against that Option attack and they could not consistently get stops for 3-4 consecutive downs because of it.

3) We got hosed on a few more DPI calls that were phantom calls and extended drives or gave them new life (Not sure how many because I need to rewatch today)

4) Golding still has issues getting the D off the field when they have the opponent almost dead to rights in a 3rd and 10+ situation or even 4th and 5+ situation.

I need to go back and watch again but from memory it seems every time Golding fails on those downs it's because he plays prevent and the QB has all day to make the play running or passing OR he blitzes and it somehow always gets picked up and the QB hits the WR in the space that was vacated by the Blitz.

I think we can fix problems 1 and 2 going forward.

Problem 3 we have no control over other than our DB's turning their heads to play the ball because the refs are flagging us every time there is any kind of contact and the DB's back and and the back of their helmet is to the ball..... But that's is Saban's preferred technique to not look to not get out of phase so I don't expect that change.

Problem 4.... man I just don't know.

Either Golding has the worst luck in the world in these situation and he just happens to guess wrong every time OR he has a pattern of tendencies that opposing OC's like Mullen and Kiffin have figured out and he needs to self scout these and change them.

Amen to that. I’m still upset about the way we gave up 20 yards when we had Florida 3rd and 10 on their own 1.
I felt that was "the one that got away." We hold there and JoJo catches a punt at midfield and we are instantly in scoring position. Instead, they convert and drive 99 yards!

I don't disagree, but Florida couldn't get us off the field either. They had the ball four times in the second half - TD, TD, TD, and then the last play of the game. Total plays in the second half were Florida 34, Alabama 33.

The issue is that it's a very, very simple read. If the ILB lines up on the edge near the TE or slot, and blitzes, throw to the TE or slot. Way to simple to diagnose. The only way we could try to offset it is if we dropped the OLB on the edge into coverage in a type of zone blitz. We have this playcall, but we very rarely use it. Even when we do, it's really hard for the OLB to get back into the right place in time to stop the quick slant.

In year four under Golding...

I SOOOOO want to eat crow on my criticism of his work, but just when I think Bama's D is back, something like this happens. I can excuse the option - that's a tall ask to manage that in-game - but even outside of the the D looked cautious / confused and displayed a lot of poor technique. All of that points to the DC.

At some point we'll have to stop blaming 'everything under the sun except the DC' for the under-performance.

Since Golding has been here we have had issues with ILBs looking completely lost. Moses, Mack, and now Henry T and Christian Harris. I just find it hard to believe that none of their struggles is on the coaching. Especially with the way we recruit.

Now we did get better last year as the year went on so hopefully that will happen again. But it just seems to be a continuous issue.

But here is the thing…. Who do we get to replace him?

-The common answer is Ronald McDonald, but he is probably getting a show cause because of his time at Tennessee. So that’s out of the question.

- Vulnerables? That’s an even dumber suggestion when the SEC is loaded year in and year out with quarterbacks with Justin Fields athleticism.

- Schiano? I guess but it may be too late. He might have just said screw the SEC.

-Strong? Well unless Urban quits or gets fired this year it is incredibly unlikely.

Everyone has this opinion “it’s Golding”, but very few have offered home run solutions on who to replace him with or ones that are coming from Planet Earth.

Just because I can see the problem doesn't mean I have the solution. :)
my point is there is a majority on here that believes that Vulnerables is greatest DC in the game and Golding is bottom tier. But who gave a whooping and who took a whooping vs Ohio st? All these DC’s are struggling against something.

All things considered the best DC in the last 10 years is probably Dave Aranda. He is probably the only DC that has consistently made these Offensive gurus look stupid and many of these elite qbs look mortal.

No but the stench of pumpkin and doughnuts isn’t.
Wasn't there with Butch Jones? :) I'm not minimizing the circumstances surrounding his exit at UT. I'm just throwing out that there really isn't a legal barrier to hiring him. In fact, AU hired Pearl during his show cause, just didn't let him actively coach. It's Saban (and Byrnes') call as to whether or not the hit to our rep would be too great. I really don't understand Pruitt's actions till today. Desperation, I guess...

Don't know what the Jets are paying him, but I imagine a boy from Alabama would prefer coming back to Bama over the Big Apple any day. I could be wrong. He could prefer the NFL. He might have more HC aspirations, but a few years back at Bama wouldn't hurt him if so.

Butch also wasn’t like the 12th choice in a fiasco coaching search that resulted in a hiring and firing of a coach (Schiano) that was caused by a fake news story, a firing of an AD because he spoke to Mike Leach, and Phil Fulmer becoming AD. I understand wanting to start your career but starting your career in a situation that is beyond comprehension is beyond idiotic. Anyone who saw what was happening at Tennessee saw it was a losing prospect.

If Pruitt wants to come back and is able then so be it. But until then he deserves all the criticism for his stupid decisions.
