What happens in Vegas ... should be approved by Obama

Obama is not making the locals happy (again) with his comments about where people should and should not spend their money. And the comments below are from the Dems.

Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman said during a hastily called news conference that Obama is no friend to Las Vegas and would not be welcomed here if he visits.

"I'll do everything I can to give him the boot," Goodman said. "This president is a real slow learner."

Goodman and others are worried that Obama's words will discourage visitors from coming to Las Vegas and depress the industry further.

"Enough is enough!" Democratic Congresswoman Shelley Berkley said in a statement. "President Obama needs to stop picking on Las Vegas and he needs to let Americans decide for themselves how and where to spend their hard-earned vacation dollars."

Nevada's tourism has been hit hard during the past two years as consumers everywhere tighten leisure spending and companies spend less on meetings and conventions.

Reid, one of Obama's closest allies, issued a statement headlined "Reid to Obama: 'Lay off Las Vegas'" and was unusually blunt in his reaction.

After sparking a firestorm of criticism from Nevada's elected officials for suggesting that people saving money for college shouldn't blow it in Las Vegas, Obama told U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in a letter that he wasn't saying anything negative about Las Vegas.

Whats wrong with that?:conf2:

Nothing wrong with it. Same as the last 157,000+ manufactured outrages since Jan. 20 of last year. It's the same mind-set that, given two choices on any issue, will blast whatever choice is made. In the process, their opinions become irrelevant.

He's really not the person to lecture others about being frugal, for one thing.

What's wrong with it is that it Vegas and many of her citizens exist on tourism dollars. They don't like it when the POTUS makes a flippant comment that equates to "don't go spend your money in Vegas." We would be seeing the same indignant responses from the likes of Walt Disney World, the entire state of Florida, Hawaii, or Atlantic City, all of which depend heavily on people choosing to vacation with them.

Are they being hypersensitive? Perhaps, but this is the second time in a year Obama has singled out Vegas and he should simply try to remember to be more general in his comments rather than singling out a vacation destination.

I agree. I don't think Obama truly meant to single out Vegas, but when you think gambling you think Vegas. The association is obviously there. He should have said don't gamble away your college fund, but...it's still not that big of a deal. At least, not to me, but I don't live in Vegas.

Agreed.

Obama has done a lot of scapegoating since he's been in office. Vegas has been devasted by the housing bust, which was created by the government. Having POTUS discourage people from spending tourist dollars there is adding salt to a wound.

Why not? And to not blow money in Vegas is far from being frugal.
He's not the person to be lecturing on any money matters. His decisions and his goals have been less than economically sound to say the least.

This:

"When times are tough, you tighten your belts," Obama said, according to a White House transcript of his appearance Tuesday at a high school in Nashua, N.H.

Earlier Obama chastised large companies for buying corporate jets, having year end parties, redecorating offices, etc. What does Obama have against those that build jets, cater parties, and do interior decorating, etc.? I guess only Big Government should be allowed to redistribute wealth.

He's not implying to not take vacations. He's implying dont blow your savings for college gambling in Vegas. Sound advice!

Sound indeed! Right up there with the old adage, "Don't borrow trillions from the Chinese to payoff your political allies, leaving the the United States of America with a massive black hole of debt the likes of which has never been seen on this planet."

This guy(Goodman) sounds like a real jewel:

From Wikipedia:
[edit] 4th grade gin

On March 3, 2005, Goodman was speaking before a group of fourth-graders at Jo Mackey Elementary School. When asked what he would bring if marooned on a desert island, the mayor replied "a showgirl and a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin." Further, when asked about his hobbies, the mayor named drinking Bombay Sapphire Gin as a favorite. Later, when asked to comment, Goodman was unapologetic: "I'm the [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Washington"]George Washington[/ame] of mayors. I can't tell a lie. If they didn't want the answer, the kid shouldn't have asked the question." This caused an uproar from parents whose children heard the remark, and school officials said the remark was inappropriate. Stories published March 2, 2005Las Vegas Sun
[edit] Thumb amputation and caning

On November 3, 2005, Mayor Goodman suggested that those who deface freeways with graffiti should have their thumbs cut off on television. Goodman, appearing on the "Nevada Newsmakers" television show, said, "In the old days in France, they had beheading of people who commit heinous crimes", "You know, we have a beautiful highway landscaping redevelopment in our downtown. We have desert tortoises and beautiful paintings of flora and fauna. These punks come along and deface it", I'm saying maybe you put them on TV and cut off a thumb", and "That may be the right thing to do."
Goodman also suggested that whippings or canings should be brought back for children who get into trouble.
"I also believe in a little bit of corporal punishment going back to the days of yore, where examples have to be shown," Goodman said. "I'm dead serious. Some of these (children) don't learn. You have got to teach them a lesson, and this is coming from a criminal defense lawyer." But, he added, "they would get a trial first."

And I do wish he would stop giving terrorist fist bumps to his buddies.;)

Hypersensitive indeed. If you don't choose your outrage more carefully, credibility is lost.
