There are any number of dogs than can be dangerous if not raised properly. German Shepherds, Akitas, Rottweilers, etc. Yes, pit bulls can be overly aggressive, particularly if they are not raised properly. In a good home, they are wonderful pets--two of my best friends have one, and it is as sweet as can be--provided that you're not another dog acting aggressively.

An issue beyond the question of breed is the number of dogs involved--the OP article mentioned seven+ dogs, and at that point, pack mentality takes over. My sister in law has a habit of talking in strays, and at one point had 5 in her back yard, all of indeterminate breed. One day they got out and attacked and killed a neighbor's dog.

Yes, it's a terrible tragedy, but there's no reason to eliminate an entire breed. If the little girls had accidentally shot herself, would you be calling for the destruction of all handguns?
This happens with humans as well.

Until a couple of years ago we had pit bull, rottweiler, and presa canario called out as 'ineligible' breeds. Now we ask history of aggressive behavior/previous bite instead because we found narrowing to breed wasn't helping loss ratios. Incidentally, we don't uprate for history of dog related loss nor do we offer the option to exclude animal liability coverage. We prefer to simply decline the riskier business.
In our apartment rental business our State Farm agent told us ---some years ago-- that pit bulls, chows, rottweilers, dobermans and German shepherds were frowned upon unless they were in a sturdy pen with an enclosed top. He said insurance might be cancelled if the agent discovered these dogs on the premises. We don't allow these dogs.

I remember being surprised that we didn't include chows and dobermans - but that's probably b/c I had scary experiences with both. And I always laugh when we tell someone they're 'required' to keep a dog penned up. Because we actually follow up to make sure so often... ;)

I once had a cocker spaniel that ate my neighbor's kid's head. They told me I didn't raise it right. Didn't show it the proper love. I told them to get bent.

if everyone were required to have pitbulls, there would never be any issues ;)

My boy is confused by cats, he doesn't know what to do with them. He has played with bunnies and is afraid to death of squirrels. He just loves playing with puppies at Pet Smart, the kids there come up and want to pet him all the time. One time he had so many that he just laid down there by the registers and let them rub on him, one little girl laid down with him and put her head on his neck. The parents were all there and and no one got injured, I take him there all the time to stay socialized with other dogs and humans. You can see him in my picture.

Was that the gay couple living next door to you?
Heh. No, they have a couple of dachschunds.(sp?) Stereotypes exist for a reason, you know.

Although now that I think about it, I do remember one of their little monsters getting away from them on their afternoon walk, they're strong, you know, and went and kilt one of the other neighbor's whole brood of pit bulls. These gays, man. They move into the neighborhood, fly their vibrant flags, and kill folks' pets. It just ain't right. This persecution must end and I must receive reparations.
