Fair enough - Ryan Day was 13-1 in his first year, and Lincoln Riley was 12-2. Both of those results are still attainable for this team although I am not sure it’s likely. What are the records of Ryan Day after Urban Meyer, Lincoln Riley after Bob Stoops . Those are more modern examples. Build the program , hire the right successor and it will hum. JMO.
I’d argue that it’s a bit different in that both guys were internally promoted assistants who retained much of the schemes and staff from their predecessors. Not as much of a learning curve. I’d also argue they both played in slightly weaker conferences.
There was no one on our 2023 staff that I would have been thrilled to promote to HC - and frankly Oklahoma and Ohio State took big gambles doing what they did. They were the exception rather than the rule; more often you end up with a Bobby Williams at Michigan State situation, or what’s happening at Michigan this season. You’ve also seen somewhat diminishing returns over time from Day and Riley.
I think we made the right move and hired the best available outside sitting head coach who would take the job, and we will have to live with some of the growing pains and learning curves.
