Why didn't we blitz?

...screw statistics...I've never seen a statistic win a game...

bamar you nailed it, we just let an immobile qb set back and look over the field until someone came open...a blitz would could have at least forced him to move and his accuracy drops way down when he's moving...I hate this 3 man rush...

Not really agreeing or disagreeing with the "blitz more" opinion, but I did want to add a coment that I heard one of the players make on the post-game radio broadcast. I can't remember who it was, but he said that the LSU offense made changes at halftime and went into more max-protect formations in the second half, negating our blitzes. Perhaps we were dropping into coverage to counter this, and *just got beat* by a very good athlete at QB who made some plays when he needed to. I would echo those who have said very good overall defensive game. Don't blame the defense. Our offense was just unable to step up when needed in the second half, and that was the difference.

In the first game of the season, Arizona State blitzed Russell all day. On the last play of the game, they didn't, and Russell danced around forever and finally threw a TD to win it with no time left on the clock. The guy's eight feet tall and can see the entire field. Not blitzing on the 3rd and 6 was a huge mistake!! Sooner or later he was going to find an open receiver. It cost us!

A blitz doesn't have to result in a sack. Just making the QB get rid of the ball quicker is a plus. Obviously, by the amount of time Russell took to find Bowe, a blitz would have resulted in his throwing the ball alot sooner......or a sack!

Anyway, RDT!!

Apparently, most of you don't care to look at the facts before being critical. We blitzed about 25 times in the game, which is a huge number. The defense gave up 10 points in a 60 minute game against a very good team. I don't know what else you can ask for. LSU did a great job of showing the screen just enough to make it a big threat against a blitz.

Sorry to sound so harsh, but people who think that the blitz is always the answer are usually the people who don't know much about football, but think they do.

And a lot of times we ended up "bouncing off" JR and he ended up making something happen downfield. Did anyone count the times we pressured him on the initial 3rd Qtr. Drive for their touchdown. Of course, the bad call and all!

No, not obviously. By that logic, you should blitz every down. You fail to mention the fact that a blitz means less players in coverage, thus a greater chance of an open receiver and no need for extra time. Nor do you mention the chance that the offense anticipates the blitz and calls a screen or a draw. In order for your scenario to be obvious, we would have to assume that LSU went with the exact same play (a big assumption) and we would have needed to have 12 players on the field. But we are not Arkansas.

Dude, # 1 in scoring D in the country, top 5 in all the other major statistical D categories, held LSU to 10 points in regulation. Do you not understand the problems are NOT on the defensive side of the ball? This is a GREAT defense. To be 9-1 with our O-line is simply amazing.

The Bama defense did not lose this game. I thought they played strong the whole game. They were constantly put in bad field position for most of the second half and only gave up 10 in regulation. They held them scoreless for a whole half. LSU made adjustments at the half and did what they needed to do on offense and we didn't.

We blitzed a season high 24 times

I realize that this is a futile request, but please quit 2nd guessing the coaching staff ... the professionals that spend all week; 1) breaking down film of the opposing team, 2) developing a game plan, & 3) implementing the game plan. These are also the same people that coach the players & know their strengths & weaknesses.

Just because you go to the game, know some of the players names & read the papers does not mean that you know anything about the game ... especially when you question why we didn't blitz ... when we blitzed all night and LSU picked it up each time.

The better team won ... if you can't see that then you weren't paying attention.

Roll Tide!
