Why not put JPW in the Shotgun?

Taking a three, five, or seven step drop takes a toll on the QB when he has to do it 40 times. Being a former QB myself, I understand that being under center helps set up the play action better and leaves the defense guessing. However, it was very noticeable that as the game went along, JPW got a little tired and his footwork wasn't quite as good late in the game compared to early in the game. Also, he was in the shotgun almost every play at Hoover. Also it is much easier to locate the open receiver faster form the shotgun.

Does anyone have any other ideas of why the shotgun was taken out against FL? I beleive that JPW could be a lot more mobile out of the shotgun. Or snap it to JJ occasionally. JPW can be a great QB if he is put in the position to be. RTR!!:BigA:

I agree that we should utilize shot gun more often, but I also think that we won't see JPW throwing the ball 40 times again this year. :)

On a side note, I'm really impressed with how fast JPW has progressed this season. Here is a guy making his 5th career start and he's making throws like he is a seasoned veteran.

I think JPW is doing a great job - this is his first year as a starter and he has thrown for more than 1,100 yards. He is going to be a good one as he matures in reading defenses and I really liked the positive things CMS had to say about him after the UF game, i.e. when JPW makes a mistake, he always wants to know what he did wrong.

and how about some designed qb runs from the shotgun? perhaps a draw or sprint option type play?

jpw's a good runner...not great...but good enough to make the defense shadow him or get beat for 8-10 yards. every time he lines up in the gun and pops a run, the d has to inch that much closer to compensate, which in turn loosens up spots in coverage.

I agree and have other suggestions..............

call some designed rollouts for JP to aleviate the pressure and run the hurryup offense if we even have one. the no huddle puts more pressure on the D. all this plus the shotgun would have made a difference in that game.

See my post yesterday under the "Solutions" thread for my comments on opearting or at least running more from the shotgun set. IMO it will give JPW more time to read the Defense and give KD a better look at the holes as they develop.

How about a fake pitchout to RB left , rollout to right and pass to TE on a crossing route? In the red zone, why not pitch to JJ and let him run left behind Castille, McClain , A. Smith and the TE?
I'm sure Coaches need my input.

caldwell is much better at snapping the ball in a normal setup rather than shot gun formations, so that may be a reason that we dont run the shot gun offense very much!

I agree with letting him roll out more often. Take notice in how he some how makes accurate throws off his back foot, when most Qbs are almost assured of throwing a pick. I think JPW would even more effective throwing on the run. But, i'm not the coach.

You're not the only one that's noticed this. Caldwell has been super at center but I swear someone's going to intercept one of his shotgun snaps this year. That may have been part of the reason we saw Cardwell take over at center late in the game with Caldwell sliding to LG.

I know! Let's put JPW in a smaller, more fuel efficient version of the shotgun and call it the "shogun"..Then call all audibles in Japanese!! :biggrin2: Yeah!!

If this doesn't work then..how about the "sho-nuf-gun" and use southern colloquiallism's only, for audibles.:eek2: :biggrin2: :BigA: And then maybe hire Pat Dye to re-write the playbook!!!;)

yup, shula said last night that when we are in the 2minute aka hurry up offense to get some fast points we will push caldwell to guard and bring in cardwell to snap in these shotgun formations.

my dad is almost 80 and he still refers to the shotgun as the "short punt" formation. he also immediately recognized that single-wing formation that arkansas used against us. said they used to run that same type of play all the time back in the 40's.
