Great write-up as always, Jess. I know it is just a first step, but I am looking forward to how this season develops. Roll Tide!
Agreed. I'm old school in that numbers should be 1-99, numbers should be unique, and position groups should stick within a certain number range assigned to that position group. Also, I'm less adamant about this but I wish players wouldn't change numbers so often. No number is any better than another number so if you start out with 35 or 57 or 83 as a freshman then stick with that number for 3-4 years. Maybe as a senior allow first choice of any number they want but otherwise just stick with a number and make it memorable.0 doesn’t look right on any player. It’s a stupid gimmick.
For now, roster size sort of determines the duplicate # situation, but I wanted to mention that in the college game, there has never been the kind of position restriction baked into things like it was in the NFL. Harry Gilmer played QB wearing a number in the 50s. We've had tight ends with numbers all over the place, same for LBs. We had a RB (Wilbur Jackson) with a number in the 80s because he started out at receiver and they never bothered to change it. The only position I can think of that has been constant in that regard has been the OL, which has been 50-79 for as long as I can remember it.Agreed. Actually that isn't the worst of ideas when playing an overly matched opponent. You're going to beat their brains in anyway so might as well pump the brakes on the big scoring plays to get more individual reps. But, the down side to that is risk of injury, so I can understand why a coach wouldn't do that. We do it in baseball, but baseball isn't football so I can't make that comparison. What do you guys want? Runners to go out of bounds so we can run more plays? Give me a break...
