Worst career coaching decisions?

you have to think about that for a second. would we be better off today?
would Frank Beamer or Butch Davis been able to have done better? i think Beamer would have, but he was a long shot at best. Davis would never have stuck around though. a few good years and he would have been off to the NFL.

yea you have a good point it was at the end of dubose's stay at alabama
when we done pretty horrible but we did get a sec championship
 
Walt Michaels leaving the Jets
Ray Perkins leaving the Giants
Walt had the Jets 2 quarters away from the Super Bowl in the mud bowl in Miami
Ray had built the Giants up to making the playoffs.

Bobby Bowden being too proud to "interview" for the Bama job. I know Bowden is a lightning rod to some, but can you imagine what kind of success he could have had at Bama IF (that's a big if) he could have had the same quality of teams he had at FSU during the 90's. And what would have ever become of FSU if he would have come to Bama??? Deep thoughts!
 
In my original post I was actually just talking about the coaches themselves making bad choices that killed or adversely affected their careers. We could have a monster thread if we included bad decisions by ADs and schools making bad hires. Unfortunately we would rate pretty high on that list too. :rolleye2:

Yep. The thread got a life of it's own. Gerry Faust to Notre Dame was a no brainer. What High school coach would turn that down? Same for Dubose to Bama's head job. Both of those were good decisions by the coaches, not so much for the school. :frown:

Many of the above examples were good decisions by the coach.

Alabama asking Bobby Bowden to interview. Instead we got Curry.

I think Mike Dumbose's last minute changing of the game plan on a weekly basis takes the trophy in that case.
 
Whoever it was that called the pass play that Ed Scissum fumbled that lost the 1997 Iron Bowl.

Bruce Arians? Wasn't that him?

Or was it McCorvey?

Whoever it was should have been strung up from the flagpole.


Another absolutely STUPID move by a coach was Pat Dye outsmarting himself in the 1984 Iron Bowl. Fullwood darts to the end zone and they hit the two to make it 17-15. Why the two? So they set up the field goal to WIN and go to the Sugar Bowl.

So what do they do? They try a fourth down from the one-yard line. That's bad enough. To make it worse - they don't even give it to their best back. Don't you ALWAYS die with your best shot? Jackson and Fullwood collide, Rory Turner makes the tackle and we have our one moment in the sun in 1984.


Another dumb one was Bob Gibson calling for Joe Pisarcik to hand off to Larry Csonka, who fumbled and the Eagles - literally - made the playoffs because of THAT play. All they had to do was down the freaking ball!!!

That - to me - is the all-time dumbest decision any coach ever made.


Ironically, we could play 'what if' with that one. The Giants fire the OC and then fire the head coach. Then they hire Ray Perkins - who drafts Lawrence Taylor. Then Perkins goes to Alabama and Parcells win two Super Bowls.

Think how it would have been different in 100s of ways. For one - I doubt Perkins would have been our head coach.

My vote goes to Coach Kragthorpe for leaving a solid program at Tulsa & taking the Louisville job..He had it made at Tulsa..And if he would've waited a couple of years..He would've landed at one of the elite schools..Does anyone know what happened to Kragthorpe after getting fired from Louisville???..
