Link: ATH/S Malcolm Mitchell committed to UGA

I think someone mentioned this earlier but this means we will have the #1 CBs from the past 3 years on our team! I am predicting Mitchell to be a great one based strictly on his athleticism, size, and ball skills.

And that is based on CNS being the best DB coach in the game. He landed the number one S and possibly the number one CB this year. As you said, past two years number one CB. Our depth in DB is going to be insane. Wish we could get EE on some DBs just b/c the defensive scheme is so difficult and they would benefit from the extra spring time

I couldn't care less about the rankings...

Good news for 'Bama is that with separate announcements with Mitchell and Rome, I think that tells you one is UGA bound and the other is 'Bama bound, and that's exactly what we are hoping for. I feel confident we'll land Mitchell tomorrow night.

I agree the further apart in distance and time the two friends are when they announce the better for Bama's chances with Mitchell. There are a whole lot of heresay reports that Mitchell will choose Bama tomorrow night. I have felt confident for a while now that Mitchell will choose Bama.

Agreed. And FWIW, I feel a lot more confident with Mitchell than I did with Dickson.

It sounds like Mitchell as a genuine interest in playing WR. If that honestly being the case, I wouldn't vote out UGA. We will give him the opportunity, but we need him more at DB. UGA can recruit WR's. With AJ and other big time players to show. Plus, Murray will be better than Stafford IMO. I just hope he realizes his best chances of making it into the NFL are on defense and not put too much emphasis on where teams say they will play you.

We could use him at WR too. If he wants a shot there I would bet CNS would give it to him. Many just feel his best chance at being a superstar is as a DB and if anybody can scout that it would be CNS :)

I don't see how the desire to play wide receiver would send him to UGA. He could play WR at 'Bama too, we've sent receivers to the league recently, and it's not like we have Spencer Pennington waiting in the wings at quarterback. And besides, it's not like UGA is exactly loaded in the defensive backfield in their own right.

In the end I just think it'll be a moot point. I think he's heading to Alabama regardless.

Mitchell stated in a recent article that he's willing to play both and that Saban said he'd get a shot at both. He's not your typical WR convert though... he's a very legit WR.

why is he announcing tomorrow night?

He announced that he would commit to a team on the 20th near the beginning of the year. He's mentioned in interviews before that he doesn't really like the limelight and if he announced on NSD then he would've been more than likely on TV in his high school with hundreds of people around him. He wanted to do a small announcement at a restaurant he enjoys with a few friends and family. He even mentioned in the latest interview that Rome tried to get him to go to announce on ESPNU with him but he doesn't want to be on TV. He'll let his talent speak for himself

seems to me like rome wanted to do it together, but that Mitchell didnt want to be on TV, and nothing to do with choice of school...kind of odd if they were both picking different schools that Rome would want it to be together.

I hope we get him, but I think I'll remain 'cautiously optimistic' until I hear his announcement.

Which do we need more? Mitchell or Rome?

Mitchell IMO... you can find TE's who can become difference makers (i.e. note the progress Preston Dial made as a player), but potential stars in the secondary are tougher to find. Many of them, like a number of DB's we have brought in over the past four years, simply don't pan out for SEC ball. Go back on our roster for the past ten years and I'd imagine the percentages of TE's who don't pan out are lower than the DB's. Just my opinion though.

I think Mitchell too. Even though our pipeline for DBs looks pretty good on paper, there seems to be that great unknown about whether they will excel in CNS' system. We probably want to get as many potentially great corners as possible--and Mitchell appears to be one of them. Our TE pipeline looks above decent, but it obviously has a few unknowns in it as well. Could be wrong but I think there is just more flexibility in finding/training new TEs than DBs. Hope you roll with the Tide Mr. Mitchell.
