Phil Kornblut on a website called Palmetto Sports has a good write up on Clowney. It is titled "Clowney Wrapping Up Clemson Visit" posted Jan. 30. If anybody else reads it, tell me if it seems kind of strange that Clowney would try to be so tight lipped about his process, but his coach seems to be stealing his thunder or is the coach just being honest about his opinion?

the coach could just be deflecting some of the hounds off of JC

I think it has more to do with the coach who has been bashed by USC fans and is hoping to make a mends by speaking positive regarding USC. That does not mean JC is coming here but it is funny the 180 turn the coach has made regarding UA and USC. I think the coach still wants him to go to UA but he no longer wants the USC fans to think he is pushing him to UA.

Jarell Adams committed to SCar. That puts them at... 32? I think they only have 4 early enrollees that can be back-counted, so greyshirts or bad grades are going to become a factor for the Gamecocks.

we are at 31 total right now.

4 kids counted back to 2010 class so we are really at 27.

clowney has a spot for a L.O.I regardless.

I guess you are only taking one more commit (Clowney) because that would put you at 28 to sign in this class. Correct? Any additional committs would have to be willing to take a gray shirt....?

Yes I would think there are certain players they would make room for and that would mean a gray shirt for someone.

not ony a gs but they'd have to be willing not to sign a LOI. you may only sign 28.
Supposedly there are a couple of recruits that have committed with the understanding that they may be asked to GS. Personally I'm not a fan of the oversigning, but it's allowed and lots of schools do it. I think you are going to continue to see this primarily from the mid-level teams trying to claw their way into the upper tier of the SEC (USC, Arky, Ole Miss, etc.).

"Clowney will sign with USCE, don't want to be far from momma." Thats what was told Saturday at Saban's house by Coach Pruitt, supposedly according to a second hand source. Has anyone else here heard this?

Well Collins is a grayshirt and 2 possibly to Juco. That would leave 25 wth the people you expect to sign.
what i was getting at is it is a clear thumbing your nose at the rules. normally all player sign an LOI, EVEN GS'S. at leas thats the way saban has done it over the years, including last year. I have no problem with a GS. its needed in many cases to preserve some student's max eligibility when injury or grades may be an issue. My issue is with the idea of having kids not sign, therefore having no binding reason to grant them a scholly. Its icky and I would expect nothin less of Steve Spurrier in his desperate attempt to feel like a top tier coach again. If SC or any other SEC school has player actually not sign LOI's in order to skirt the rule, you can expect a this rule to be amended to end the loophole. I suppose it will be the "Spurrier Rule" but it flies righ the face of why you place these limits in the first place.

If Coach Pruitt did indeed say this then you can take it to the bank. There is no one on the staff who is better informed about the recruits then Coach Pruitt.

Clowney faces a hectic week
South Pointe DE Jadeveon Clowney is not announcing Wednesday and coaches can't see him in person this week at his school or home, yet the pace for Clowney will still be frantic. He just came off an official visit to Clemson over the weekend but USC and Alabama remain his focus as he works on a decision for his February 14th announcement.

If this is indeed true why wait till his birthday the 14th to sign? Is it just for the attention knowing after signing day he won't be getting it? Doesn't make sense for him to wait if his mind is already made up.

Would you use the words "icky" and "desperate" to describe Nick Saban's 2008 Bama class where he signed 32 kids (per Rivals)? How about Shula's 31 signees in 2005 (33 commits, 31 signed)? If I remember correctly Saban oversigned in 2008 in part because key recruits Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, and Marcell Dareus waited until last minute to announce (sound familiar?) and he was not sure he was going to get any or all of them. The implication that Saban is somehow above all this is not supported by the facts.

It is naive not to think that most coaches will oversign within the limits of the rules when faced with the possibility of landing a 5* kid. Besides, if a player is told up front that he may be required to GS and commits anyway, where is the ethical issue?
