It isn't as though Alabama did poorly in recruiting or in the on field transition (from mediocre to championship caliber) while he was at Alabama. I understand there was some personal stuff, but I think people are letting that cloud their judgement. Having said that, I'm not privy to the details but I think the main point is Saban wants him back and it's hard to argue it would hurt recruiting.

Personal feelings can sometimes get in the way of job performance. Those feelings might have something to do with certain company policies, a conflict of personalities with certain members of management or even other employees. Mostly those are temporary, and time has a way of soothing those emotions. I've left jobs in the past and have gone back to those same jobs later and found that whatever it was that caused me to leave the first time was no longer a factor. The only thing my employer asked is that I do the job to the best of my ability.
For this reason I think that if Thompson wants to come back to coach with the Tide, and Coach Saban wants him back, I have no problem with having him back on the TEAM. JMHO

There were some other things at work there....and none of us can say what we would or wouldn't have done if we were in his situation. No need to get into those details here..and if anyone does, there posts will be edited to remove them. But it is what it is.
Hmmm, interesting comment.

In view of the things that you obviously know behind the scenes, do you think this would be a good hire/fit?

I remember back in 07 that people trusted Major Applewhite's hire... and Kevin Steele that same year. Both turned out to be poor "fits" at the Capstone, as were a few more in subsequent years.
The important thing to note, though, is that "poor fits" don't stick around long with Saban.

If this were Mark Richt then I'd be worried because he has to be forced to make a change, but Saban creates an environment where poor fits don't stick around long enough to damage the program.

I'm uncomfortable also, and not so much for doubting his LB coaching abilities, particularly when compared with Willis and Sunseri. I just know too much about what he did and knew during the Dubacle. I don't know how black Willis' record is with the domestic stuff, but I'd preferred him, both as a recruiter and position coach. I'll trust Saban's judgment until we see Lance's onfield performance, but CNS is not perfect and has made some bad hires and he'd be the first to tell you that. The main rationale, I hope, is that Lance is a super recruiter, when backed up with CNS as a closer, and we have CNS and the other LB coach to fill in any LT deficiencies in onfield coaching. Couldn't he just coach TEs? :)
This ^^^^
Saban's call but it doesn't mean we can't get the willies.

I've long thought that getting the "inside details" on football stuff could be a double edged weapon. Several posters seem to refer to some mysterious thing Lance was involved with where he didn't do what was right when he was in Tuscaloosa. Something that seems to involve wearing or not wearing pants and a divorce.

I don't know the details, really not interested, so whatever they are, they don't bother me. (Ignorance is bliss?) If Saban wants to rehire a coach, he's the boss. I'm betting he knows more of the bottom line, inside story than most people.

If, as I suspect, Lance is a bit of a Romeo, well, guys that have luck with the ladies can typically be very persuasive in general. It sounds like a trait a recruiter could use to good advantage.

LT was heavy on the recruiting of JJ, and others in his class, IIRC. Did a pretty fair job, from what I saw. Don't know about his coaching skills, heard some negatives before and after his departure, but just hearsay.
I know there were a lot of issues involved in his departure - some involving his personal life. Being a proponent of the "two stones" philosophy (one work, one home, never carry both at the same time), I do understand first-hand the difficulties involved in a divorce; sometimes, the "home" stone gets cracked, and when you go to replace it with your "work" stone, some chunks fall off and you still carry some of it around.
Nervous because this is not CNS' usual behavior, as per his track record with assistants; he's the boss, he makes the calls, I'm pretty sure he doesn't care what I think (or anyone else on here), but the "uncomfortable" feeling I have is somewhat akin to what I think I would feel if I remarried one of my exes. Just doesn't seem right to me, but I'm on board with it.

LOL - that's funny. But true. And I have heard first hand from some who met him during his recruiting of JJ that he would never starve as a used car salesman.
But, as others have posted, it is what it is.
