QB Competition 2018

All I can go on is what I see. The games Tua played great in are mop up duty against a team we routed. BTW Jalen played well enough in those games as well to get Tua in by the early second half. Go back and watch Tua when the other team can muster up half of a decent pass rush. Other than the Vanderbuilt throw when the game was definitely not on the line and we could afford to take risk you can see how some of his balls would have been suspect against a decent secondary. All I'm saying is this whole debate is not fair to Jalen or Tua at this point of the season. All the responsibility has been put on Jalen and this expectation for a true freshman to be a savior. Tua was told to learn the system and get some game experience in year one. Not go win Bama a NC. Both players are operating on two totally different parameters. Jalen is being told to go out and win the football game, Tua is being told to go out there play and get better. HUGE DIFFERENCE. I don't see how so many Bama fans fail to recognize these truths.

Your response to the conversation, rather than addressing the concerns expresses about Jalen, is to tear down Tua? If you are right, at best it means that Alabama is doomed.

I tend to focus on the real problems and what can be done about them instead of deflecting

All we, you or I can go on about Tua is hypothetical given he hasn't had a truly meaningful snap. Unless you are saying being up 30-35 points and evaluating each QB the same is fair. Have a lot more to base on with Jalen since there is actually tape on him in meaningful snaps. I love Tua. Got to meet him at fan day and he's gonna be great when his time is called. But this thread has a lot more to do with tearing Jalen down then a valid argument for starting Tua as a true freshman. And if we are truly doomed it's because Coach has lost control of his players attitudes. That worries me more than anything else.

I don't think that anyone is tearing Jalen down. I think that everyone sees him as a very good QB - good enough to win a championship this year. But that does not mean that he has played up to his potential, nor does it mean that he has made the best choices. And it definitely does not mean that the coaching staff has put him and the rest of the offense in the best position to achieve success. In fact, I would argue that the coaching staff has kinda put him in a position to fail. I expect that to change.

This thread has nothing to do with tearing Jalen down, people's opinions are based on what they've seen so far...which is how you derived your opinion correct? If there are posts in this thread tearing a player down , do you not think those posts and it's posters would be dealt with...I think you are confusing analytical conversation with insults, otherwise I would love to see specific examples of "tearing someone down"

Yes I have heard all that as well. That is a lack of senior leadership on the team not specifically a Jalen problem. I have a hard time believing that anyone that goes back and watches tape, slows it down looks at coverages and pressures like I do would say it's all a Jalen problem. Problems like you say are being had now are from a lack of leadership plain and simple. Players don't get their way and they pout. That's definitely not ALABAMA Football. There are bias's among the Alabama football base that have gone back a long time. Looks like they have made there way into the locker room. I say again that's a leadership issue. It would be different if Alabama was a .500 football program and the players wanted a change but we're not. We've lost 2 games with JH. Sounds like we have a LOT bigger issue than QB problems to me if all this is true.
You ain't the only one that's looked at the tape my man. You're on a board with some of the biggest football fans on the planet. At a minimum half of the people here have re-watched the games from this year and last year.

You aren't reading these things properly but this is the last you'll hear me bring it up. Just to be clear, people with direct knowledge are saying that players on the team have an issue with the way Jalen is playing his game. Not leadership at large, not phantom bias's or whatever, but tangible and present gripes with a single player. Now, this is something that can be worked on and the coaching staff are aware. It's not a given that the team has turned on him and he is now a pariah or whatever - but it's something that needs to be addressed and it is not A: People with an agenda making this up or B: As simple as saying "leadership issues." There are specific qualms that they need to work through to play as a cohesive unit. That is totally possible and doable. You'll not hear me besmirch the character of a player I don't know. But you best believe I'm taking others on this board at their word.

Now that's my piece spoken on that. To bring it back to the first part there are times I've seen Jalen sitting in the pocket and going through his reads. I'm not sure i've seen anyone say he CAN'T go through his reads. It's more a question of his decision making while making the reads and whether he hangs onto the ball when he should be throwing it or whether he is able to "predict" when an opening will occur and see a route develop sufficiently enough to let the ball go. Now I have seen him anticipate some to a degree but I've also seen him wait until a receiver is wide open. I've seen enough that I think he can continue to develop more consistency but who knows if it will happen enough in the short term. Adjustments in playcalling will certainly go a long way as well.

Keep it real.Tua didn't just come in the last minute of games handing the ball off to run out the clock. He played enough quarters to amount to several games. I doubt CNS he would say it wasn't meaningful.

Well to be fair the thread title is "QB Competition 2018" and others have also commented that Tua's mechanics often tend to get muddy under pressure. But - as with all freshmen, that improved as the season went along.

I don't think so. I think you're assuming Jalen has been given too much responsibility vs him taking on too much himself. I don't think Jalen was asked to go win a championship year one. I think CNS rolled the dice early last year vs USC and said this is the route that we are taking. As far as Tua and mop up duty, the game being on the line or not doesn't have an impact on quality throws. Again , the mods (people with inside knowledge) are trying to tell you whats going on behind the scenes.

Let's be honest, the moment JH knew it was his team and he knew what was expected from him. Read this thread for example, you lose 2 games and half the fan base wants to bench you. The lack of Jalen's development could be very well attributed to him being coached not to lose games as much as any of his deficiencies that we don't mind listing to build a case against him. I haven't said he was Steve Young or Brett Favre but he has enough tools to get the job done if he's put in the position and the rest of the team executes their jobs as well.

Many many people here have stated that play-calling and coaching changes may have been detrimental to Jalen's overall development as well as his individual performances. That's definitely been taken under consideration and certainly has veracity. I hope you are right that he does have the tools to get it done because he's certainly starting for us against Clemson and more than anybody on here wants Tua to get a shot, we all want Bama to win (especially against Clemson.)

I have some knowledge of what's going on in the program as well. I know that are some staff coaches that aren't huge JH fans. And those are leadership issues that trickle down to the locker room. If I've heard it I know the players know and that is a virus. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

I am being honest, I would ask you to do the same. No one is calling for anyone to be benched. In all due respect you are ignoring what very knowledgable people are trying to tell you. No one can force you to accept or believe any information put in this board. However these guys on this board run a tight ship and do not allow for player insults or calls for benching so again please find those posts ....in order to fix a problem you have to accept there is one. It's as simple as that. Any qb at Bama expects to compete for a championship, but expecting that from yourself and being asked or told that from a coaching staff....nope ...not the same thing.

i didn't read all 600 pages of posts in this thread, so forgive me if i'm asking something already addressed.

i've seen it posted in many places that currently Hurts doesn't project as a QB at the pro level.

if that's the case, is there a possibility of Hurts transitioning to another offensive position...perhaps as some kind of hybrid back/receiver?

he's clearly a tremendous athlete.

I haven't really seen that. What I have seen is a few amazing throws when he's moved out of the pocket, kept his eyes downfield, and found an open receiver - a few times for TDs.

Those have happened as well. But commentators even brought it up in games early in the season, it's definitely happened.

The problem is that he lacks lateral quickness. He is straight line fast, but without quickness he can't make anyone miss. But I have not given up on him as a QB - still believe that he has all of the basic skills to become elite.

I have to believe everyone on this thread wants Alabama to win the national championship, preferably with Jalen at Quarterback.

I agree. He has another season to improve on few things: If he can get those fixed, he'll be a candidate to play on Pro level.

I know the QB position is different than others for a variety of reasons but it seems to me people take criticism of that position way too personally. I know many people who wanted Henry to get more carries than he was when Yeldon was still here and could probably list a ton of cases at positions like OL when people wanted to see a change. Often, we haven't known with certainty that the backup was any better but when you see a weakness in your team it makes sense to look at (among other things) the players next up on the depth chart. That is all that is happening here.

Obviously, we are fans and are working with incomplete information since we don't get to watch practices and aren't actually in the locker room or around the team every day. However, we do the best we can with the information we have. In this case we know Jalen has some deficiencies that have cost us at times or at the very least put more burden on the rest of the team. We also have reason to believe that Tua is stronger in some of those areas. Do we know with absolute certainty that Tua getting snaps would be beneficial to the team? Of course not. But if that is the standard we are working with then there is no reason to ever talk about sports again.

Question... have you ever been on a HS or above coaching staff?
