Say it with me - position coaches don't solely recruit their position.

Not to mention that if he's willing to get in a car and ride up to Huntsville, he's already several steps ahead of what Dunbar was as a recruiter.

I doubt we miss on as many guys by hiring a coach who has produced 4 first rounders, multiple All-Pro players, a NFL DPoY, multiple Big-12/SEC DPoYs, countless All-Conference and All-American defensive linemen. He may very well be the weakest recruiter on the staff - I have my doubts because success in recruiting depends on luck, assignments, and the program you represent - but we've more than made up for recruiting in almost every other hire.

Agreed, plus having that Bama A on his chest with his coaching background can only help his status as a recruiter and you don't join a Saban coached staff without realizing the importance he places on recruiting. Im not sure how Saban views his recruiting abilities but the UA logo and this guys defensive line coaching reputation may not require him to be an elite recruiter. Either way , I think we come out on top in this hire.RTR

Sounds like this was a fantastic hire once again. This hire makes me even more confident in R Davis having a huge year.

I think that my impression is not so much of his abilities as a recruiter, but how good the Missouri d-line was with him running it. Remember that Michael Sam was drafted in the last round and never made the NFL, but he was co-defender of the year with CJ, iirc, and they had another really good rush end on the other side, I think? Missouri had some good defensive linemen under this guy.

Coach Kul has spent most of his coaching career on Pinkel's staff at Missouri, a program that was hyper-focused on player development and almost prided itself on NOT recruiting elite athletes, but instead "coaching up" and developing more lightly-regarded talent. He primarily recruited Texas there, and is generally regarded as an excellent talent evaluator, but--of course--Missouri was never going to get the blue-chippers out of Texas, so he isn't going to have a lot of 4- and 5-star "gets" on his record.

I can't speak to where his recruiting area was at Miami, but if it was anywhere but Texas, he was likely starting over and building entirely new relationships.

Bottom line is, he will be an outstanding position coach and an outstanding talent evaluator. Great hire.

And even if it was still Texas, that is a hard pull for a long down Miami program that isn't exactly known for being a national recruiting program even when they were great.

This. We don`t know all the circumstances surrounding the short time he was in Miami. I`m having a hard time getting in a recruiting related dither because of something some butt hurt U fans are saying. I think I`ll trust CNS on this. What the hell is that stupid looking bird they have for a mascot anyway?? Some kind of ibis or something ?

He produced great results at Missouri. The NFL is littered with his pupils. From Missouri.

Again, Missouri.

Makes me think the biggest difference will not be so much in the elite 5 star DL but in a guy who's a 4 or 3 that he'll be able to coach up and make into an animal.
