Alabama QB competition article

With a stronger Defense coming back, he might go with Jalen. But he will need more points and early leads this year. Personally I think we win either way.

With such a young and inexperienced secondary, and a relative lack of depth on the line, I don't think this defense will be as strong as the typical Alabama defense, at least not early in the season, so we may actually need to score more.

Secondly, when the teams with strong defenses come to play, Jalen Hurts will have the same problems he ever has, and our offense will have a hard time moving the ball consistently. Besides, that, recruiting will suffer for it, and that's the future.

Oh yeah, and Tua will be gone, so he wouldn't be around to save the team next time Jalen can't consistently move the ball or score points.

JMO, but I don't think that you beat Clemson this year with Jalen at QB, and maybe not Auburn, MSU or Georgia.

Jalen Hurts makes far more mistakes than does #13. I could list them all, but it's been noted over and over already.

Exactly

Not much difference between making a bad read & taking off and running (and not making it) on 3rd & long when there are open receivers & throwing a 40 yard INT. Either way you give the ball up 40 yards downfield.

I've been watching those Bama games in 30 minutes or less on Youtube -- and find myself shaking my head more often than not regarding Jalen's play. And even though he makes mistakes (late decision making, running where there are no holes, etc) - he never makes the back breaking mistakes.

Tua plays more like AJ -- with better running skills. I think he will mature into a better game manager with comeback skills. But, we may have a few close calls along the way because of his desire to force something - and sometimes those don't go your way. If we can survive the first few games without him driving Coach nuts -- we should be on our way....back to the playoffs

Gotta love the written word -- the point I was trying to make (and failed) - is that "if we had a stronger defense coming back, he might go with Jalen" -- but since we don't, he won't because "he will need more points and early leads this year" -- and I'm not sure Jalen can do that. But I do think we still will win with either.

And it may have more to do with just the "opponent." Our team morale will be just as problematic if Jalen starts and can't run the offense the way Tua demonstrated in the NC game.

FWIW, I don't think there is much of a chance this happens.

Yeah. When I read your post, I took it as meaning exactly that. If our defense was stronger, then Saban might lean more toward Jalen but Tua's offense will likely be needed since we are less sure about the defense this year. Then others responded to you and made me doubt how I had interpreted it.

To be fair to Jalen, he has won us big games when either our defense was not playing good or we've needed a play to win. '16 Ole Miss, '16 LSU, and '17 Mississippi State come to mind. Now, when it comes to games like Auburn and Georgia last year, it's not like Jalen had much help from the OC, who knows how things would've ended up if Kiffin was still the OC because Jalen had the most success under Kiffin.

If you're going to give him the credit for winning those games, then let's give him the credit for struggling when we lost the games vs Clemson and Auburn, and would surely have lost to UGA.

Tua Tagovailoa had the same offensive coordinator last year as Jalen Hurts did. Somehow, the O.C. got a lot better when Tua came in.

Sorry about that. In review, I don't think it was your fault. It was mine for failing to understand your point.

That was the most damaging evidence for Jalen. OC could call any play and he could execute it. Herbstreit even acknowledged this very early in the 3rd quarter.

There's just no comparision between the two players passing skills and ability to direct a downfield passing offense.

Yep, he certainly did. He said something like "Daboll has more of the playbook at his disposal with Tua in the game." Which indicates to me that during Herbstreit's meetings with the staff during the week leading up to the game. Either he was explicitly told this by a staff member or from his observations at practices. But either way he was right because the offense magically transformed from Clark Kent to Superman in the second half.

Are you predicting Tua transfer to Clemson...that's bold;)

100%. Another way to think about it -- if hypothetically one of these guys could transfer without sitting out to a rival, which one would you rather play?

Jalen doesn't scare me at all -- I have zero doubt Saban would take away what does well and stifle the offense completely. Tua would scare the hell out of me.
