Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Our situation at WR is as good as it has been in my lifetime. The 2014 group may take the lead right now because Cooper was so dang dominant but this group is deeper.

Coach Gattis retweeted that one.

I noted that Coach praised Tua in his post game presser for his ability to keep his eyes downfield while scrambling, and he went further to say that some QB's just put their head down and run when moving out of the pocket. I assume there was a point behind his comments, maybe a couple points.

I just hope Saban is not putting Jalen’s feelings above the best interests of the team. I want to believe that he is not. What I saw happen last night though does not strengthen my confidence.

I think the best comparison for Tua is Russell Wilson. Physically and the way they play..other then Tua is a lefty.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

At this point, I think its clear that the coaching staff should put together a package for Jalen for situational snaps. The competition is a farce at this point, so I hope they put together something for him to contribute in a meaningful way. He could be a heckuva weapon in short yardage, goal line, and change of pace situations.

Once it's obvious to Jalen (as it must already be to almost everyone else) that he cannot win the starting role, I expect him to talk to CNS and try to work out a situation for him to redshirt this year so he can transfer after the season. Seems like a smart move to me. Who knows though, he might would rather get playing time as a backup, no way to know for sure. I think we'll know within a couple weeks.

I hope Jalen does not play again till the SEC title game even than only in packages getting ready for the playoffs. Mac needs to start getting some reps and a chance to throw the ball.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Big question now is how does CNS use Tua and Jalen in game 2???

I hope this little experiment of giving Jalen 2 or 3 series early needs to be over. IMO, Tua needs most of the reps next week (until later in the game when all first teammers sub out) so the first team can gel and get some valuable reps before Ole Miss.

When Jalen entered the game it killed our offensive momentum. That a strong word but that's what happened.

Probably like the Blake Sims-Coker FAU game in which we start with Tua and get up by 3-4 scores before Jalen the rest of the way. I think Tua will be 100% the starter in what looks like a shootout in week 3

What if we are up 3 or 4 scores at the end of the first quarter or early second quarter?

I think at this stage of Tua's career he needs the reps.

If the teams confidence and play doesn't get any better with Jalen, I think Mac Jones will be 2nd string by the Arky game.

If we get up that fast then it would be exactly what happened in 2014 against FAU. Coker came in mid way through the 2nd when Kiffin had ran all of the scripted plays for Blake. So yes I believe if we are up that big then its quiet possible that Tua wont see the 2nd half. Also keep in mind its possible that AKSU scores on us early with their passing attack vs our inexperience at DB so the 'battle' could linger into the 2nd half.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

It's funny but I was thinking during the game that Tua reminded me of a combination of Fran Tarkenton and Steve Young. I guess a couple of other people had the same thoughts. Already comparing the young man to two Hall of Fame QB's, so no pressure there.
Jalen could start at quarterback for a lot of college programs but he happens to share the same position as a once in a decade talent. When Aaron Rodgers transferred to Cal he replaced a quarterback named Reggie Robertson. Never heard of him, right? Well three games into the season Reggie Robertson had completed 52 of 85 passes for 669 yards and 8 touchdowns. When Aaron Rodgers replaced Reggie as a starter, Reggie had, if I recall, the best quarterback rating in Division 1 football. He never started again.

I understand that Jalen is a competitor, but at some point I think he has to be honest with himself about his future at Alabama as a QB considering where things stand now after one game this season. He can play in another 3 games this year and still redshirt, but that's it if he wants to transfer and have 2 years of eligibility left. I'm saying this from the perspective of what would seem like the best alternative for Jalen if he wants to play QB going forward. As an Alabama fan, I welcome him with open arms as our back up QB for the next two years.

And, to be fair to Jalen, that often happens with a quarterback rotation.
