Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Maybe Jalen thinks some people are correct and his chance to play in the NFL is only at another position. Or maybe he loves Bama and wants to be a complete part of this year with no exceptions.

Choosing his own personal goals over the teams is absolutely understandable. It happens every day. It’s a business and his future. No one should decide that but Jalen. What I am saying is in a team sport where you are either apart of the team or your not, you are on board or not, you cant be selfish and say, “I am here and use me” but only if it’s necessary. Its Saban’s job to do everything he can to help all our players get better and to help this team be the best it can be. We are better IMO with Jalen on our team and playing in some capacity than we are with him riding the bench.

How could you ever tell your 100+ players its ok to play when you want too and not play in the games you don’t want too? That would cause complete chaos and turmoil.

1. Why not? That's essentially what Saban did with Tua last year. Why couldn't Saban talk to Jalen and agree on this? Just because Jalen is advocating for himself?

2. Based on what exactly? Tua is clearly the better player so what does Jalen add that makes our team better outside of being the backup?

3. You wouldn't its an individual situation, you can handle different situations/players differently. Thats a vast oversimplification of what would be happening. Didn't people say the AJ was the real backup if Greg went down? So, why would this situation be any different than that?

Can we close this thread now that CNS has “officially” named Tua the “starter”?

Just a thought, could Hurts not use the redshirt this year and graduate in December. Graduate transfer and play in only 4 games next year to acclimate to his new team and still have another year?

No, the story really hasn't ended yet...

If he redshirts this year and graduate transfers, then he has 2 full years left. The 4 game thing no longer comes into play.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

But Lane, Arky State could come in playing angry - 'specially since 'Bama snagged their top QB prospect this summer as insurance for Jalen's premature departure - maybe the new true freshman and almost-ex-Red Wolf should get the start at QB to take the edge off...

I really don't think that anyone wanted to "Vilify" anyone with questions about the QBs. It's obvious that CNS has a "special" relationship with Jalen that he doesn't have with all of his players and he wants to protect him from being "hurt". It's actually the first time I've really seen him do something like this because he "chews out" those DB's and talks about their mistakes with no problem in press conferences and after the half of games. That being said, Í'm glad he ended it with a simple statement about who is starting.

Arky State here we come! RTR!

1-I am lost on how this is what Saban did with Tua. Tua played early in the season and burned his redshirt opportunity. Same thing Jalen would be doing this year if he stays and plays. Did you not listen to Saban’s press conference today? He said, How can a player pick and choose which games he plays in? How is that fair to his teammates and the team? So no, not the same and I dont think Saban makes those kinds of deals. You are either a part of Alabama and your committed to this team or your not. We dont allow players to “buy in” to only parts of the program and the process. You are in or out.

2-Jalen makes this team better as being our backup. The only way he keeps getting better is to keep getting more reps. In games and out. Him getting better each week makes Bama even stronger if he is needed to take back over the starting role. Saban job is to make Bama better!

3-I refer again to Saban’s comments today as well as the Bama Process. You either buy in fully or you dont. We dont need partially commited players taking up roster spots when there are others ready to bleed everyday and make sacrifices for this team.

We've barely gotten started on 2nd string

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I think we will find out our answer real quick. This week in fact. With a game like Ark St, if Saban and Jalen have some sort of arrangement in place, Mac will come in this week and we won’t see Jalen.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Just saw the presser where he talked about who starts. That was probably the most awkward and unsure of what to say that I have ever seen Saban. He also said that he prays every Sunday that he won't get mad and he talked to, and apologized to Maria (although he called her Marie).

Was thinking the same thing. This week will tell us if Jalen plans to redshirt this year.

I think, at this point, there is no “QB competition ” (thread title). We know who’s 1, who’s 2nd for now and who’s 3rd maybe soon to be 2nd.

I have to agree with this. I don’t see any point in playing Jalen outside of mop-up duty. Tua is a good athlete, and his ability to pass makes him a dangerous runner. I just don’t think you’re gaining anything by playing Jalen. The offense will stall because we can’t stretch the field.

Also, as far as redshirting Jalen, I have no problem with it and don’t see why anyone would. As long as the agreement is that in case of an emergency Jalen is available regardless of when it occurs.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Love Jalen and all he's done for the team and the school, but I don't see that Jalen adds anything to the offense that Tua can't already provide, with the only difference being that Tua probably can't run over people and/or push the pile the way that Jalen can, but does that really matter at all?

I see no advantage to changing off between the two...and i'm not saying we needed to or that I wanted us to...but we could have scored 80 on Louisville with Tua if we really had wanted to.

Other than loyalty to Hurts, I see no advantage gained by subbing Tua out until the game is totally out of control.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Ironically, early on one of the criticisms of CNS was that he would only play the starter -- he would not develop the 2nd string QB in games. I even heard this from former players...

Now we're criticizing him for playing 2 QB's -- the lesser of whom was the 2017 SEC OPOY. I guess it comes with the territory...LOL.

It's the "timing" of when to bring in Hurts that will be the debate now. No way I'm in favor of a rotation like we saw against UL.

Personally, I'd like to see Tua get a lot of reps even after the game is in hand on Saturday. Nothing like game reps when you are a young qb.

IMO, hope we don't see #2 qb until 4th quarter this week.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

This “wont” work for Saban IMO. I cant see him allowing a player to be that selfish and put himself over the team and stay on the team. But I dont have to make that decision

Selfish by not wanting to come in for mop up duty (and burn a year of eligibility) when everyone knows he's transferring at the end of the year? Maybe Jalen doesn't mind losing the year of eligibility in order to get some more on field experience but I'd imagine he'd rather hand on to that extra year..
