Thanks for the report. You can always see more in person than from the TV angles. FWIW, I thought I noticed our running backs being uncovered on several times too, but Tua always had his eyes downfield.

To Georgia's credit, they were taking away the downfield shots and by the time Tua read the defense, his running back was no longer available.

I thought before the game this is what Georgia would do and that Tua would just take the underneath stuff, but he didn't and/or we didn't call enough plays with shorter routes available.
Oh no, I have watched the replay of the game. You can’t see it on the screen but there were probably 7 or 8 plays where UGA made no attempt at all until the play was dead to cover our RBs. Our RBs were literally in the flat standing all alone calling for the ball.

Plays were being called in the game imo to showcase Tua to win the Heisman even after his injury. We could have owned the game and even likely avoided his injury if we had just focused on the RBs more both running and passing.

Every play has a few reads which will determine where the ball should go. I watched the game again yesterday and saw Tua, several times, see the double safeties and still look deep before looking to the middle of the field. This is very frustrating to watch. He was not taking what GA was giving him. He is a GREAT QB, but he has to work on this.
I agree that this is the greatest single factor limiting his development at this time...

After the last Championship Game a couple of Georgia players commented that they didn't have a plan if Tua came in the game...
Looks like the same thing happened this year, except Georgia had no plan for Jalen...

We have two Championship caliber Quarterbacks.

I'm pretty sure if Tua can play he will get some field time, I'm also pretty sure we can depend on Jalen to carry the load if need be.

We have to get past OK to play Clemson... Clemson will have the tougher Defense. May we arrive with a two headed monster at QB
when we face Clemson.
I've never been a big fan of playing two QBs, but this year it's gonna be a necessity.

Jalen said he just now is getting back to normal after his high ankle sprain surgery on 10/21. I don't feel good about this at all for Tua, he seems like he gets hurt easy and maybe a slow healer. We may be riding Jalen through the playoffs.

I've seen/heard A LOT of Bama fans overly worried about Tua being ready in 4 weeks due to Jalen Hurts individual experience with .. quite likely.. the same procedure.

I understand people using the transitive property and taking Jalen's time table and applying it to Tua however this is far from a sensible way to ASSUME re: Tua.

This procedure is designed to speed the healing of a High Ankle Sprain (Stretched ligaments that cause mobility between Tibia Fibula, etc). As such this procedure has been championed to have high intensity athletes back at or near 100% within 10-14 days.

This time table Saban has publicly stated is not Nick Saban guessing, or playing doctor -- This is what Nick Saban has been told by the best sports medicine Doc. in the south east (and arguably beyond). This is what Nick Saban has WITNESSED with quite a few other players going through the same procedure.. ie: Cam Robinson.

To INCORRECTLY use Cam's experience as an example (as each person/patient is unique) -- Here is when he injured:

https://fanbuzz.com/college-football/sec/alabama/report-suggests-alabama-ot-cam-robinson-had-surgery-to-repair-ankle/

And Cam was back for the LSU game and played every Snap.. WELL. Cam was on that line against a physical LSU defensive group -- Cam's a BIG BOY putting all sorts of high pressure on that ankle and he healed "on time" if not a bit quicker (Sub 2 weeks).

If you go digging (and if you just THINK back to all the players who had a high ankle sprain that was severe enough to warrant this procedure to get them back) you will find the majority of players who underwent this relatively minor procedure had it do precisely what Dr. Andrews intends for it to do..... Speed a 4-8 week recovery time to about 2 weeks.

Also -- Tua Tagovailoa's 'durability' has NOTHING to do with his speed in healing. He's a kid/young and should heal faster than 99% of adults do (unless they are ~20 as well) :)

Bottom line: I don't just hope, but I fully EXPECT Tua to be 100% healed and ready to practice in a few weeks and of course be 100% for the OU Game. I DO suspect, however, Tua will be in a boot and look quite worrisome in these upcoming award shows/circuit this weekend. However, that is expected at end of week 1 post op.

Indeed. Tua would have likely soundly beaten Georgia if he didn't have that left ankle hurt so early as he would have been out of pain and able to do his "Tua Processing" to hit these ridiculous deep routes.

BUT...

All game long Locksley had 1, often 2 CHECKDOWNs.. whether split backs or otherwise on most plays. Tua didn't look at the wide open checkdowns many, many times when he kept his eyes downfield deep then proceeded to get sacked 4+ seconds later.

Tua has to understand the "homerun" shot isn't necessary or even advised MOST of the time. Had Tua 'checked it down' like a veteran QB would do (and what Tua will learn to do).. To guys like Josh Jacobs, Najee Harris, and company (guys who can turn a 5 yard pass into 20+) -- He would have steadily moved the ball, improved his stats, kept GA's defense out on the field longer, and caused the GA defense to cheat back up to start limiting these check downs. It would have been strategically SOUND to purposefully go checkdown to shrink the defense to OPEN UP some of the longer passes.

How many times have we seen a relatively short pass to Jaylen (Cheetah) Waddle go for a touchdown? How many times have we seen a relatively short check to Irv Smith, Jr go for 30+ yards or TD? I'm MORE than happy to watch Tua dink/dunk to a team who has Jaylen Waddle as it's legit 4th string WR target.

I'm sure this will be addressed on film study.

Thompson plays for the 7A title game tonight. Tua will be there in support of lil bro. Guess it’ll be his first public display of whatever hardware he’s walking around with for the injury.

Spent some time last night developing a better understanding of alternative treatment for high ankle injuries and what scoping of the ankle area would entail. From what I can gather as a lay person a scope would be utilized in cases where the tendons or cartilage may be damaged but not to the extent that would create instability between the joints of the Tibia, Fibula and Talus. Utilization a scope and laser enables the surgeon to clear debris from the wound including frayed ligaments, any damage to the cartilage and bleeding that may have occurred due to the trauma of the injury. This procedure appears to reduce inflammation and aid healing.

The utilization of T-cells which has been mentioned here previously may be utilized to significantly improve healing time but this is a much further reach to achieve understanding.

Conclusion: There is a wide range of injury severity to the complex group of tendons of the Syndesmosis which could also include damage to the membrane that runs the length of the Tibia and Fibula bones. The length of time to heal would vary widely. Tua's injury could be in the lower range of severity of these type injuries. We will know more over the next several days.

Here is a brief video of ankle scope Laser clean-out

Hope he shows up in a wheelchair, walking boot (aka "instrument of torture") on both legs, and crutches alongside just in case he needs to stand.

Maybe an IV attached, with some sort of mystery voodoo medicine.

Someone may need to "coach him up", on looking miserable, and in horrible pain.

Okay, I'm a little confused. Which ankle got scoped. Was it the left one that got hurt first, or the right one that got stepped on and took him out of the game? thanks

Many figured it was the right ankle based on him not returning and the cart being brought out. However, the procedure was done on the left ankle, which explains why Tua wasn't his normal self during the game. He played three quarters with a high ankle sprain.

That’s exactly why he struggled on a lot of throws. As a QB, when you’re cocked, weighted loaded, and ready to throw, most of your weight is on your back foot, and then your shift your weight from your back foot to your front. If he couldn’t put the weight that he needed on his back foot then he couldn’t get the torque that he needed in all the throws, when he was loaded, shifting his weight from back to front. That would explain why a lot of his throws were behind the receiver.

Thanks for the info. All I'll say is OUCH. How did he play as long as he did.

And... instead of this being viewed as a heroic performance it's going to lose him the Heisman trophy most likely. Hurray for ignorant voters.

This was the most confusing thing to me. most of the year, Tua had taken those checkdowns. Jacobs has 15 catches on the year and most of those were on checkdowns with maybe 1-2 downfield routes. D harris has 18 catches and I'd bet ALL of those were checkdowns. Something was off in the way Tua was processing the game. I kinda wonder if UGA didn't change things up significantly and we had prepped for and planned on tougher coverage underneath and had put more focus on the downfield reads and just couldn't get out of that mindset.

when Tua is hurting, he tries to get off the field, ASAP... hence, the looks deep. He did it when he first hurt the knee earlier in the year, too.

Knowing CNS he will ensure Jalen gets plenty of practice reps because even though the expectation is Tua will be "as good as new" and "good to go". That simply may not be the case after one sack. Jalen HAS TO BE ready to take over and go the distance.
