Well now I am conflicted. I have been as critical of jalen milroe as anybody on here. But if he has improved as a passer I am not sure how with his size and athleticism you keep him off the field. But it sounds like simpson is gaining ground and is a better pure passer.

I wouldn’t put too much into it. The context is very vague and we are purely basing it off quarterback drills. What Milroe struggled with was processing reads when the defense was calling plays and goal line offense. Right now we have no clue if he has conquered either.

It’s difficult to say. Basically we are basing everything off a fan day, ahem a pay for an autograph, practice. Saban tends to value scrimmages more than practices. 2014 fan day for example led many to believe Coker was about to overtake Sims… but Sims just dominated him in the two scrimmages. It’s a process and it could play well into the early part of the season or it could be decided on the 19th.
Ugghhhh the season just needs to start already

From a neutral observer who was there.

I thought all three quarterbacks -- Jalen Milroe, Ty Simpson and Tyler Buchner -- made some good throws.

Simpson did have a deep ball that got away from him and was picked by corner Trey Amos. Milroe had a tipped ball over the middle that could have been picked. Buchner had a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage by Damon Payne. But, overall, all three QBs made some good throws.

Keep in mind that OL coach Eric Wolford was shuffling the offensive line around every few plays and working different combinations, which can make it difficult on the quarterbacks.

Working on the other end of the field, true freshmen QBs Dylan Lonergan and Eli Holstein also made a few nice throws. Lonergan had a very nice strike to Malik Benson.

Of the three main competitors, Ty Simpson caught my eye on a few plays as he stood in the pocket and delivered strikes downfield between defenders. He threw a dart to Isaiah Bond, who ran it into the end zone.

I wasn't charting throws or anything, but Ty impressed me the most today. That's not a prediction. It's an observation from one practice. He looks to have more potential as a passer than either Milroe or Buchner.

I will say, however, that in the limited times I've seen Milroe, his performance today was the best I've seen from him. His throws were mostly accurate, and he protected the ball. He had a great throw deep down the middle of the end zone dropped by Bond.

It's a little early to judge Buchner. Everything is so new to him. But I like the way he handles himself. He was under a lot of pressure and made some quick decisions to checkdowns. He had a deep ball into the end zone that Terrion Arnold (I think it was) jarred loose from Jermaine Burton.
Should we be concerned about Benson working with the 3s? I thought he was supposed to be our best WR this year.

obviously not an insider but I am not sure you can read too much into that. Saban seemed high on him in his press conference the other day. (Well, as high as saban gets about a guy who hasn't played a down yet)

Law has been our best WR from Spring. But WRs in general are a mystery because the staff keeps adamantly stating that they are really good when every fan observation shows more of last year. I honestly don’t know where anyone but Law and Burton stand in regards of rotation.

Maybe if these drills were happening at the same time, they had to spread the WRs around. I’m hoping for Benson to be the next Jamo. I can’t take another Tyler Harrell or Duron Carter situation lol.

Sigh

It sounds like we are going to find a qb. (Obviously scrimmage will tell the tale). But for the love of god just catch the ball. Do I need loan coach saban my Adderall prescription, so they concentrate more???

I don't understand how you fix that because I don't understand how its a problem. Its literally what you are being recruited to do and have done for years and years.

Just watched a podcast with Jimmy Stein and he had some similar thoughts. Thought Milroe might have had a slightly better day, but he believes Simpson is gaining ground and will eventually overtake him for the starting role...even if Milroe starts game 1.

He also said he thinks there is a clear separation by MIlroe and Simpson from Buckner. Just based on a few passes I've seen from Buckner, he's not super accurate with his throws.

I think Milroe's feet keep him in the mix more than his arm, but it sounds like his passing has improved. I'm still leery of his short to midrange accuracy and I think that's why Simpson will win the job eventually.
Fwiw Jimmy Stein has consistently said he thinks Ty will be the guy in the end. Doesn't mean he's wrong at all but just keep in mind he would need to see something significant to change his opinion probably

Didn’t this entire board pretty much assume Ty was gonna be the guy? We’ve all seen Milroe play…

Very much agree with this.

No disrespect but handling actual adversity and mentally processing the game is way way way harder than throwing the ball 40 yards down the field.
Well, they have been practicing against one of the best, if not the best, defenses in the country. The defense has been relentless putting pressure on these quarterbacks this past week during scrimmages. That has to help a lot.
