GOP Fight for 2024 nomination II

First debate is tonight and even without Agent Orange in attendance, I predict this will have all the grace and tact of the Three Stooges in a haunted house. I also predict more people will be tuned in to Tucker Carlson's interview of Trump than there will be watching Fox News. Needless to say, I won't be watching either one.
It was my wife and my 37th anniversary, so we met a granddaughter and SO out for dinner. When we got home, I had a brownie dessert and a half-glass of pinot noir and slept through it. Who won? :)

I didn’t watch but I suspect if you had seen it you’d have needed a lot more than just a half glass of wine.

I watched out of curiosity. Here's my take:

1. DeSantis was trying to play the Alpha male in the room -- did not work. Too full of himself...

2. Christie is old and bitter...

3. Asa H. actually attacked DJT's attack on the justices...but he is old and like watching paint dry.

4. Nikki Haley was actually pretty good -- well informed and quite honest...something the others (except Vivek) found dangerous. She was especially good on the abortion question as she noted that there are nowhere near 60 Senators who will vote for a Federal ban on abortion. She's as close to a moderate Republican as they have...

5. Tim Scott -- same tune, different audience. He did show a good sense of humor and self-deprecation that DeSantis needs to have.

6. Vivek -- the revolutionary; wants to tear down and rebuild the country. Energetic and fresh, but he was talking a different language than the others. The politicians were threatened by him. At one point he said that they were all bought and paid for by their PACS.

7. Doug Burbam -- ND governor...out of his league. Wants to bring small town solutions to megacity problems.

8. Mike Pence -- most disappointing (tie with DeSantis). No real solutions...trying to fun on DJT's record while distancing himself. Same old answers...He took whatever question was asked and quickly pivoted to whatever issue he wanted to address -- usually Biden, economics, crime, etc.

I went to bed after an hour...same old tired, GOP.

It's still a race for second place because as far as I can tell, Trump's lead is still insurmountable at this time. What's hilarious to me is that Trump has the RNC by that fabled place where the short hairs grow. If they try to squeeze him out, he'll just run 3rd party which means the Dems could run a baked potato with googly eyes and still win.

I watched a 3 minute highlight clip and the term highlight is used loosely. I shook my head when they asked about who would support Trump if he was the nominee and half the people raised their hands and the other half raised their hands after they realized the audience cheered it. Trump can skip all the debates from a jail cell and he would still win the nomination and that's a really sad time in America. How does that even work? Impeached and indicted, but still able to become President of the United States.

Why debates should never have a live audience.

“I wish you well in your future career on the boards of Lockheed and Raytheon” — @VivekGRamaswamy
to Nikki Haley
Oof! Saw this and nearly fell out of my chair. I do love a brutal takedown, but I still couldn't have sat there and listened to these muppets all trying to talk over one another for 2 hours.

i think vivek has the inside track to the "independent" bro set. i don't know how much broad appeal the smug, everyone is stupid but me ted talk explanations are going to have though.

"Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was ready with a zinger when Vivek Ramaswamy called climate change a hoax and criticized what he called Washington’s anti-carbon agenda.

“I’ve had enough already tonight of a guy who sounds like ChatGPT standing up here,” Christie said to Fox News moderator Bret Baier. “And the last person in one of these debates, Bret, who stood in the middle of the stage and said, ‘What’s a skinny guy with an odd last name doing up here?’ was Barack Obama,” Christie said, referring to Ramaswamy’s self-introduction that he made earlier in the debate."

Eugene V. Debs ran for president on the Socialist ticket in 1920 while in prison and got 3.4% of the vote. He was actually a political prisoner for speaking out against WWI.

While he did much better than a socialist would today, he had no chance of winning. Trump could conceivably win from a prison cell.

Based on the reviews I'm seeing on Twitter this morning, Christie's "angry fat guy" shtick didn't have the impact he was hoping for. His candidacy is every bit as DOA as it was yesterday. Ramaswarmy is an enigma to me right now. From what I've been reading, this guy has done quite a bit of flip-flopping from stances he held six months ago. Thankfully for him, most voters have short memories and even shorter attention spans.

Replace Biden with Newsome and there's a zero-percent chance that happens.

I can't disagree; Trump has this thing locked up tight. And as I alluded to earlier in the thread, there's nothing anyone can do about it.

Congrats to you and your Lady...........37 years is truly impressive!

I watched a Glenn Ford double feature last night but switched to the debate during commercial breaks.

Ford is one of my favourite actors. I really enjoyed those movies last night!

well it would be hard to run for president from a cell.
No argument here, but I've yet to meet anyone who honestly sees this happening. At worst, he might be looking at house arrest. I was talking to a lawyer friend the other day and he suggested that these type of indictments are meant to get a quick conviction and are usually easily overturned on appeal. I didn't ask for further explanation because I was in a hurry. I guess time will tell. In any case, the point isn't jail, it's keeping him out of the White House.
