Any players hitting the Portal in the spring weren't good enough to crack their team's playing rotation.

Let that sink in...
I don't think that's 100% the case anymore. It's true in large part, but with it being as easy to transfer as it is these days, I can see some really good players after going through spring practice, look around them and decide they aren't going to win anything if they stay at their current school. Either in terms of coaching/philosophy not fitting their skills or players around them not being very good.

Perhaps.

But remember that JaMo was buried on the depth chart at OSU and once he got to Bama he was a beast.

I don't recall when he transferred, but clearly OSU didn't know what they had in him.

Sometimes one staff can completely undervalue/underestimate players they have on campus.
We've had some really good transfers. Most transferred before spring, but JaMo and Trey Amos are 2 who came after spring.

Alabama just lost multiple starters to the portal, including a couple of likely future 1st round NFL draft picks.

Right, but what NoNC4 is talking about is the portal that opens after spring practice. The kids entering the portal then are doing it because they don't think they'll be starting in the fall.

We lost guys because of a coaching change....that causes the portal to open for 30 days.

Extenuating circumstances applying only to a few schools, including, obviously, 'Bama and UDub. So here's a question relative those extenuating circumstances. I'm projected to be a starter for school X next fall, but I also know School Y as Yea Alabama needs new starters and certainly depth at a number of positions and I'm amenable to making a move and have put out word to that effect. Does the coaching staff at School Yea Alabama encourage me to go through with spring practice at School X before going into the portal? Or do they "encourage" (hush-hush) me to go ahead and let it be known to School X that I'm gone to 'Bama the instant the spring portal opens? If so, am I immediately released from/kicked off scholarship which might jeopardize my eligibility for next season - unless my new school's collective pays the way for my last semester at School X so I can stay academically sound?

All quite on the meat chicken front. Guess they got what they wanted from their new hire.

Yep. But, first, there wasn't a guy on Saban's staff that it would have similarly made sense to hand over the keys to the program to. And, second, Saban announced his retirement at the worst possible time for player retention, with time to transfer to a new school and compete in spring practice, whereas it's really too late to do that two-plus weeks later.

Sorry Doc. All I am saying is that if we need cornerbacks then there are a couple of 4*s in the portal now.

I have seen you say Saban announced his retirement at the worst time for player retention several times. When exactly would have been a good time? I can't think of a better time than when it happened.

Not really.
We got amos and key in the spring last year.

Some starting players will leave their teams if they see an opportunity open up at a better program in the spring. Happens a good bit.

We are likely to lose a few good players to the portal in the spring as well, probably some 5 stars, possibly some starting caliber guys.

But hopefully we will gain some more as well.

Neither were starters for us, maybe key cogs in the system, but not starters
Key was a day 1 starter

Amos played enough to be a starter and did start one game i believe.

"Starter" is a bad term. If you're in a teams 5 deep at corner you will play a lot. If you're in the 4 deep at safety you will play a lot. 6 deep at dline...etc....
