Alabama QBs in 2024, II

Right now I think it's more external pressure to just go with the incumbent than internal.

It's still way to early to tell what this team's dynamic will be or to have any idea how CKD handles things.

If I were betting money on it I'd say that Jalen starts Game 1 too but that other guys get playing time as well.

Basing my opinion just on the Spring and who WR's chose to throw to them for Pro Days I feel like Ty Simpson is the Best QB on the roster.

If we truly have competition I think he will take over the job at some point barring Jalen having improved a LOT in a LOT of areas from Spring to Late Aug.

In this household we have become so alienated with the situation in college football and Alabama specifically that I have cut off all the post on my FB page and and many on YouTube. Even considered turning off my feed to ESPN.

Some things filter through regardless and I see a headline that quotes CKD as saying that they are going to use Milroe's strengths in the offense. How many times have I heard that!

That has brought me to attempt to understand the Milroe situation and appreciate and accept why he is so highly regarded by the media and his team mates.

Given the circumstances it has been difficult to understand why TS has remained at Alabama. I have believed he could have been one of the top rated QB's in the country if he had gotten on the field. It takes great reliance to show up everyday and seldom get the ball.

I am at a different place than I have ever been on college football in general and Alabama specifically. Difficult to say how I will feel come kick off time!

Ty stayed because he knows he has two years after this season and odds are he'll be the starter next season. He'll know the offense front and back and he also knows he'll more than likely get playing time this season to. Sometimes the best move is to stay put and let your current situation work in your favor.

TS probably just trusts his coaches, and as a team player, understands that if they believe JM gives us the best chance this season then it’s his job to continue to develop and be the best backup he can be and always be prepared to step in when needed. Possibly nothing more than that. One day at a time.

Also, this quote form CKD is very encouraging…

DeBoer: Well, I think that's something that you see with Jalen, what he is, and I can just look back last week, a moment with our team, not to get into the details, but him standing up and speaking out. Positive but also accountability, that mix of everything that great leaders do. Building up their teammates but also just reminding them of what it's going to take for us to reach the goals that we have. He does a great job of balancing that. I think he's grown in a lot of ways when it comes to that area. But then we've got to talk about what he does on the football field. He's got a skill set that is special. With his arm, he can make you pay and he can make the throws, and I think he's continued to grow in that area, building confidence in himself, just tirelessly working with the receiving corps, actually all the skill players, just to be on the same page. I think he's continued to expand on his game with the different throws he can make. Down the field he's been strong. A year ago he was one of the best in the country with down-the-field throws. I think he's continued to work on those higher percentage throws that you need to move the chains and all of that. But he just dives into it. There's no one that's going to beat him into the football facility from the players' vantage point. He's there 4:30, 5:00 for sure every single day, and I know there's guys that have tried to beat him into the facility, and they can't. But when he's there, it isn't just punching in the clock. He's done a great job being efficient, doing everything he can, whether it's mentally, physically, to be ready for this fall.

DeBoer on why the Washington offense helped Michael Penix and could help Milroe as well: I think first of all, the talent of your quarterback is most important, right? I mean, you can go to drastic levels and talk about a guy who can't pass. Well, in the end, your passing game's not going to be what you want to be. But, you know, Jalen is super talented when it comes to down the field throws, which are not easy. He was one of the best in the country. He and Michael both were two of the top three or four in the country when it came to accuracy, efficiency, yards per attempt. But, you know, I think just continue to grow his game, build confidence. It's new language, verbiage that he's gotta learn, directing the whole show and knowing the things that he can do within our system without making it too complicated. That's what Michael had, and he had a few years at it, right? Because we were together at 2019-2020, ran the same system under Nick Sheridan at Indiana in 21 and then '22 and '23 there in Washington. So he had a multiple years. And so, you know, Jalen's just pouring himself into this learning it as fast he can. You're never going to question the work ethic of this guy. And you know, from a passing standpoint, he's got the skill set, he's got the tools. And now it's just tying the footwork to the reads and the progression, knowing when to take off and run, knowing how to move the chains, believing in each other if you can go through your progression, we can call those shots down the field and if it's not there and you check it down then the next time we can call it again and be confident in calling them more often.

I think we all want Jalen to succeed. But no amount of coach talk is going to erase what we know. Jalen is going to have to show he can see the field better this year. Seeing is believing and we have not seen it yet. Ty is our security blanket. He is one injury from being our starter and that is a tremendous advantage.

I can understand why he stayed at bama. TY will probably have the inside track on starter position in 2025. (still got to win the position). Year 2 is usually very good for teams under a new regime. All the awkward transition out of the way. Deboer is one of the best Qb developers in the game also.

Now listen: I love this guy and I'm glad we have him, but I don't think he's the brainiac you think he is...

Loved your post, @dtgreg :)

... but, on a more serious note:

Best thing that could have happened to him.

QB's can be - generally speaking - full of themselves.

A heaping helping of humble pie might serve him well.

JMO, of course. :)

I could be wrong but I think the tight competition is still ongoing and we are much closer to a 2 QB system for a few games than definitive QB1-QB2 hierarchy.

There are a few people who won’t let this go.

It was a stupid play and he messed up.

Jalen has run across the LOS and backpedaled behind it and thrown an Illegal forward pass and people aren’t continually bringing it up as a sign he can’t play QB.

Milroe will make the reads just fine.

Unless you have a crystal ball and can literally see the future you can’t make such a definitive statement.

Being able to see the field and quickly make reads is what all of us are still waiting to see happen because as of yet it hasn’t materialized.

Didn’t he do it twice in the SEC championship game?

Crossed the line twice and threw the ball, in the same game.

That is true

Let us say that he makes the right read and has the tight end matched up to a line backer over the middle for a first down. Does he have the touch and accuracy to put the ball in the right spot?
