Questions about Milroe.

Buchner was basically the Plan B after a truly horrific spring by both Milroe and Simpson. Now starting him over Simpson is another debate.
My question concerning Buchner’s transferring in from Notre Dame was rhetorical. It was clear the QB play in the spring had been bad and Milroe nor Simpson had separated themselves. And part of that decision to get Buckner by Saban IMO was the fact that Rees had coached him at Notre Dame.

It is reason i believe Buckner got the start at USF over Simpson when Milroe was benched. Saban leaned into Rees for that decision.

Yeah, I think it is telling seeing how much we absolutely roasted Tommy Rees. Yet as this season has played on we have morphed into running a very similar offense as he had to do with Milroe. Seems like there's a common denominator in those situations isn't it? We probably owe Rees an apology.
Personally, I never ragged on Rees. I’m not sure why people were pinning the O heavily on him last year.

IMO Milroe was alway going to be a “project” from the day he signed with Alabama. Four star? Yep. Highly recruited? Yes.

But if you go back and look, even the recruiting services couldn’t agree on what type QB he was. Some had him as pro style and others as a dual threat. His athleticism made him highly rated prospect, not necessarily his skills a polished QB coming out high school.

Wisconsin wasn't athletic enough to compete with us so disregard that game a little. First half vs Georgia where all scripted plays he look comfortable running and yes we had held back stuff for them. Once they adjusted and we got far enough into the play sequence he evened out. Guys on the other side get paid big bucks to gameplay we are casual fans that know his weaknesses they have changed a little but still there. See Michigan game as a example. He is who he is

Milroe has held us back for 2 years I have another theory as to why Saban left he saw the storm coming not nil but this situation we are into. The greatest most competitive coach ever walks from a 12 team playoff? Or from knowing Milroe was going to be the qb and this would happen too rich too old to have to deal with this. We as fans know we can't win with him you don't think he knew?

He doesn't want to win he wants Milroe and lank to win. He did it last year on a called passed he ain't running. Some times he drifts so far to the side he might take 3-4 yards but if it's a design pass 7 step drop he is chucking it or getting sacked.

I heard a caller on WJOX bring up something I mentioned in the post game thread. Why is Milroe staying in the pocket when the LB’s and DB’s have dropped deep in coverage and he could easily pick up yards/first downs running?

A poster here replied “maybe coaches have told him to sit the pocket to give routes time to develop”. The caller to WJOX said “or is he choosing NOT to run because he wants NFL types to see him more of pro style pocket passer?”

Something I didn’t consider. At this point, as bad as Saturday’s play was, who knows what is going on in his head?
There's a difference between straight line speed and mobility. Admittedly every D coordinator's greatest fear is JM running north south on you. He's as fast as your fastest safety and fairly large. But his movement in the pocket.... It's bad. Like really bad. Some guys just have this knack for moving around in the pocket and others just don't. He's really a below average passer who they thought could make up for it with mobility but he really has no mobility unless you open up the green field right in front of him and better defenses who have watched his film. They aren't going to do that. In fact Tennessee crashed the ends to cut off even the designed runs off tackle. At that point it was just a matter of watching JM flail around in the pocket and self destruct. Sure they knew he's get a few passes off but not enough to win. It's just simple probability and math. If Tenneesee hadn't turned the ball over so much it would have been a blowout win. Kind of sux for them because they don't get many chances to do that to us.

I’m honestly confused why we even recruited him. Maybe he was a “insurance” addition, but he has never matched any of the prototypical things Saban was looking for in a pro-style QB.

Which is exactly why you have to question why he wasn’t taking the yardage available with open field in front of him.

I could be wrong but I believe Drake Maye was originally committed to us and Milroe committed to Texas. Maye changed his mind and committed to North Carolina (which was not unexpected) and we flipped Milroe from Texas. And I truly believe Saban recruited him as an athlete and not a QB.

We missed out on all the ones we really wanted and JM was the best we could flip.
