Tom Dienhart of Sporting News has reported on the Rivals.com main message board that Gene Chizik may in fact be the next Auburn coach. He says that he has several sources from Auburn and around the nation that are confirming this. Here is his exact quote:

"This is Tom Dienhart. Wanted to let you know it looks like Gene Chizik may be the next head coach of Auburn. I have had confirmation from several sources associated with Auburn, and a few from around the nation. I am staying on the story."

If Chizik is in fact the next Auburn coach... I can't help but be excited. Thoughts??

He coached under Tubs, right? That is Aubie logic. Allsome!
He was actually their defensive coordinator in 2004 - their defense lead the nation, and he was Texas' defensive coordinator the following year when they went undefeated - and their defensive unit was one of the best as well. He then took the Iowa State coaching job, and has been abysmal...

If he can't win as a head coach at Iowa State, I do not believe he will be able to win at Auburn. I am happy if this is true.

This is good news. He has had success as a coordinator - FAILURE as a head coach. MOOOOOOO

This would be an interesting but underwhelming hire by the Barners. This is certainly not a homerun; more like a weak dribbler to second base.

Re: Tom Dienhart reports on the Auburn coaching search

Wrong place, wrong time for Chizik

It’s been less than eight hours since I put up the story that said Gene Chizik has jumped to the top of the list in Auburn’s search for a head coach to replace Tommy Tuberville. In that short period of time, the response has been the most negative I have witnessed in almost 40 years of being around Auburn football as a reporter.

It’s unfortunate for Gene Chizik, who is a good man and, I believe, a good football coach. I believe he’s a good enough football coach to have a real shot at getting the job done. But no one would have a good shot at getting the job done under the conditions he will find if he is named Auburn’s head coach.

Athletics director Jay Jacobs is as sincere and honest as any person I know. If he tells me it’s going to snow in the summertime, I’m getting out my heavy coat. But he needs to rethink this.

From what I’m told, the deal has not been finalized. President Jay Gogue still must give his final approval. If he does it, he’ll do it under fierce opposition and it will divide Auburn people to such a degree that it will be very difficult to recover.

It would be a major mistake on All-Barn's part to hire Chizik. Bad for them and good for the rest of the SEC.

I think Chizik is a very good DC, but he would be in way over his head as a head coach in the SEC. All-Barn would be making a terrible hire if this is true IMO.

Napoleon Bonaparte once said "Never interrupt your enemy while he's making a mistake..."

In that case... GREAT hire by Auburn! :biggrin2:

Wow! He must live in snakepit! You'd have to be either stupid or grossly nieve (probably both!) to say something like that about Jay Jacobs. This guy backtracks more than crooked politician.

It doesn't matter who's chosen, or should I say chooses to come, there will be division at the Barn. That program has been a cluster since Shug Jordan retired, and I'm told even before that. Even in the good years there have been under currents of dissatisfaction by one group or another. Auburn athletics, football in general, is the face of dysfunction at it's worse.

Although I agree, we can only hope for the kind of implosion near the end of Tator Tot's campaign. If we had a good coach at that time, we could have really distanced the gap. Unfortunely, we were headed by an inept coach as well that landed us on the 2nd worse probably in NCAA history. Any ground they lose with Coach Saban here will really be tough for them to make up.
