I don't know how confident they are about his knee.

I think, fair or not, AJ's starting options are disappearing anyway.
I just can’t see them severing ties to Tannehill right now. But who knows?

The Jets haven’t let the ink dry on Bridgewater and the Bills haven’t made a move yet....

Looks like CBS was way ahead of this because they have the Bills getting Darnold at #2 in a mock draft.

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cb...et-sam-darnold-giants-trade-back-then-up/amp/

So if there are any Giants fans then that might mean y’all might get AJ.
That draft is stupid since the Giants have one need greater than any other - their O-Line, and they have already missed out on the best FA o-lineman available. Taking a DT and RB in the first round while ignoring their o-line is not going to happen unless they find a way to fix their o-line via free agency.

Yeah, but there is a lot of chatter that the Bills are trying to get the #2 spot. They want Darnold bad.

Re: AJ McCarron Wins Grievance Against Bengals and Will Become Free Agent

i cannot understand AJ's motivations here. He had the best job in the NFL with the Bungles. As a backup QB, he was expected to carry a clipboard, congratulate the starting QB when he came off the field and pray that the starter did not get hurt. He did not have to take a hit, which means he could settle in for a nice long career carrying that board and patting the starting QB on the butt. And boy, did he get paid. In 2017, AJ earned $690K and threw 7 completed passes. This works out to $98,500 per completed pass. In contrast, Tom Brady earned $14M and threw 385 completed passes, or only $36,000 per completed pass. AJ's going to give this gig up to try to start for some team like the Jets or the Jags, where he is going to get hit a lot, probably last a year and end end up with injuries that will follow him for the rest of his life? What is he thinking?

He's an athlete. No true athlete likes sitting on the sidelines. All the money in the world cannot take away the desire to compete.

We only see the money. AJ is a football player who wants to play football. He wants to be in the spotlight and show his skills.

Well the Pats lost Amendola to Dolphins so it’s less space for the Dolphins and more space for the Pats. Could it be that McDaniels and Kraft be looking for a run after Brady and Belichick leave with McCarron???

Re: AJ McCarron Wins Grievance Against Bengals and Will Become Free Agent

Those are franchise starter pay. Many free agent starters are in the single millions. Foles was at 5 million last year. Fitzpatrick was at 3 million. Jamies, Wentz, and mariotta are at 6.
McCarron should be at that 1-2 million minimum spot if he was a free agent starter, but career backups are in the 100ks and that’s where most see him.
FWIW I don’t see how Cousins now makes more than AR at 23million a year, but I can see him over Big Ben and Brady.
Those three guys are all still on their rookie contracts, so that's not really an indication of market value.

If AJ can't land a place to win the starting job right now, I can think of worse backup jobs than with the Pats. If/when Brady goes down, AJ could step into a real good situation with the best team in the league. FWIW, I know they are calling Brady "the ageless wonder" but his brain is working far better than his feet at this point (I know this has always been the case too) in his career and it's just a matter of time until he get's a knee or ankle injury.

Okay 4 starts by a 5th rounder vs 2 1st overall picks and a 2nd overall pick. I still don’t see the justification for him to get paid more than them. If Case was paid 2 million last year then AJ should be probably asking between 800k to 1.5 million for a contract. Rumors from beat writers are that he has been asking as much as 3-4 million and as low as 1-2 million. Beat writers have been known to exaggerate but him and his agent(s) have consistently be known to make some vast overvaluations about his value starting with the second the 2013 season ended. So none of these rumors would surprise me if they were true or had some truth to them.

Where he is going to end up, the only skill he will be showcasing will be his ability to survive a hit. He should take the money and figure out another way to fulfill his ambitions. He is never going to be a Hall of Fame QB. Time to settle for what he can get. Very few rise to the top in any career, and mostly you just need to be happy with the level you have managed to attain. And a backup QB in the NFL is a pretty sweet gig.

If he is Brady’s backup then he would definitely get a starting role soon if it wasn’t to replace Brady. Heck Mallet got a starting gig just for being his back up, so did Jimmy G, Hoyer, Brisset, Cassell, and etc.

Re: AJ McCarron Wins Grievance Against Bengals and Will Become Free Agent

I would imagine AJ and his agent know full well what his market is and will ask for the kind of money a guy 'like that' will get paid. If the Bills want him for a starter until their next guy is ready (I can't imagine Peterman is their answer) they may pay him starter money on a one year deal with an option. And that would be a good deal for the Bills.

I honestly believe AJ is a big step up from Tyrod Taylor. I think the Browns screwed up when they took on Taylor and not AJ.

I agree that, in a perfect world, AJ shouldn't be making more than those guys (and, he almost definitely won't be). But, those guys would be making a lot more than they are if they weren't on their rookie contracts. Their salaries don't reflect market value in any way, so those salaries are kind of irrelevant. I'd really be interested to know what AJ and his people really are asking for.

I think the situations with guys like Brock Osweiler have really put a damper on teams giving big contracts to relatively unproven QBs. The Texans gave him a 4-year, $72 million contract after he had started 7 games in the NFL. That came back to bite them in the butt and he had started 3 more games than AJ.

Yeah the issue really is that Osweiller ruined the idea of getting a guy that looked ready with few starts.

I also think Osweilwer and McCown are probably the Bills’s top choices if they secure that top 5 pick because they want a bridge qb and not one that can outright take the job.

But Foles might be the most interesting one in the trade market.

No kidding. Same here. It seems teams aren't even thinking twice when moving on to the next QB.

I think the Browns are looking at the situation like this. They are definitely going to draft a QB with one of their first round picks. They wanted a bridge QB until whoever that drafted QB is is ready. I don't think they have any expectation or intention of Tyrod being their long-term QB. He's on the final year of his current contract, so they have no obligations to him after 2018. Even though he's making $16M this year, they don't care. They're so far under the salary cap that it makes no difference. If they signed AJ, he'd need a longer term contract and they don't want to have that obligation going forward. All they want is a bridge QB that they could maybe keep around at a much lower salary than Tyrod is making this year. And, it could be that they think Taylor has more upside than AJ anyway.

Jets resigned McCown.

So if the bills pass on AJ then there is something seriously wrong with his stock amongst gms, coaches, and scouts. Because now it’s pretty much Brock Osweiler vs McCarron if the Bills want a veteran qb from free agency.

What about Bridgewater or did I miss something?
