Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Well he told that to both QBs and today to Chris Fowler during an interview. His words were. He does not want either of them looking over their shoulders so they way they deal with that is one will get x number of plays and then the other will get a number of plays. His words, not mine.

I went back and read what you said....my bad...I thought you were predicting 2 series each. At any rate...I misread...

Sorry for the confusion. RTR

Keep in mind what Saban had always said. “This years team is not last years team”

I don’t necessarily dissaggree with what you are saying but he will allow this year’s team to make its own decision. Will that take 1 game or 3? We will see.
Eh, the 2nd half of the NCG was essentially this years offense.

I think it's hilarioius that Jalen gets credit for 26-2 when number 26 was against Georgia.

No different than a starting pitcher in baseball. He can leave losing the game but still get the win if his team comes back and wins under the right circumstances.

CNS also told them both a Halftime of the NCG that they would 'rotate series'. Didn't happen.

Jalen played 1 snap I believe to center the ball for a FG attempt.

When everything is clicking against UL with Tua he's not going to pull him out and break up continiuity.

All this 'they both will get series' is 100% coach-speak.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I got what CNS has said...but I'm referring to your prediction about how that'll look. Nobody knows. You've added to his words.

You are correct. Coach said “plays”, I interpreted that as “x” number of series because no coach that I know of puts a play count on when to swap out QBs. If you select a number of plays you end up changing during a series and it creates unwanted stress for the QB counting the plays before he goes out. So yes, I changed his “plays” to meaning a limited number of possessions/series.

This was actually the one reason I though Jalen could start. Once you put Tua in it could become really hard to take him out.

Two totally different situations. Its my opinion based on years of coaching and word of mouth from the locker room both QBs will play and it will be a few series and then swap. Could this change? Absolutely. But it is exactly what was told to both QBs yesterday. That is all I am saying. If you disagree you are perfectly entitled to have your own opinion.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

The GREAT news is we only have a few more hours to wait.

I hope the "we'll play both QBs" is coachspeak and a deflection to keep the Cards off balance even in the last few hours before the game.

I know this much, if I'm Petrino, I HOPE it's Jalen and not Tua...so I hope it's Tua for obvious reasons!

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I don’t think anyone disagrees that Tua will be the “QB” who leads Bama this year. I DO NOT care who takes the first snap tonight. CNS has a plan. If Jalen transfers he’s just losing out on another championship ring, which may be less important to him than some dream he has of being a pro QB.
I think the odds of the former happening are much greater than the latter. I’ll never wish him ill, but if he leaves I won’t root for him. Football is a team sport, bigger than any one player. Bama has won a few championships with QB’s who were not pro-caliber material, but that seems to be changing; maybe forever, I honestly don’t know. I do know it’s not fantasy to say Bama will be better with Tua behind center, and have a better shot at another championship. We have proof in the last two NC games.
In CNS we trust.

Are you saying you know what CNS told the QBs yesterday?

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

This is the point of playing both. Winning the team means getting everyone to give full effort when the QB they trust most is on the field. So if the WRs and others dont want one QB you will likely see evidence of that during the game. Therefore, one QB or the other “wins” the team.

Yeah....I simply disagree that is necessary in order to demonstrate who “won the team” on the field. Unless you just want to make it glaringly obvious to the public on national TV. I’m not a football coach, nor have I ever played one on TV. But I have played a lot of sports and been on a lot of teams, and you can pretty easily tell which players have the confidence of their team mates and which don’t, just from practice and scrimmage.

Not saying that’s not why Saban is doing it, I just happen to think it’s a waste of time and a lot of drawn out unnecessary drama. Meanwhile our opponents know who our most dangerous player is and will prep accordingly.

Enjoyed watching Marcus and Tebow go at it over this topic. They were sweating like they were in a tent revival.

I agree with you. The coaches know. However, this particular situation is different because of the lazer focus of the media and sports fans around the world. This is a delicate situation that we need to help make sure perception matches reality. Keep in mind, Saban is doing way more with this than preparing for 1 game against Louisville. He is also showcasing how we allow players to battle it out on the field with the best man winning. He is speaking to potential recruits and parents with this whole process as much as he is to this years team. He is always several steps ahead of most everyone else and our understanding of what his master plan and goal is. We tend to see things in a vacuum. Coach doesn’t, he is a master psychologist and strategist.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Nope. I heard Protho is finally healthy and will be back! They are giving him the start at QB.

I actually heard that Cotis Nunley had called Coach every other day to assure him that he’ll be suited up to play today.

.....bonus points for anyone who can explain this reference.....
