Alabama QB competition article

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I guess you think our talent level is the same on offense as it has been in years past but it is not. There is so much talent at every position and with Tua at QB we will average more pts than we have in the past. Easy to see the overall offensive talent is better this year than ever before.
I think what he's saying is that Saban has a history of calling off the dogs, whatever it takes - pulling starters, shutting down the playbook, etc...

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

The reason our ppg might go up with Tua is because we will score more points in the competitive games. Like vs Mississippi State, LSU, Auburn, Georgia type games. Not because Saban would run up the score more.
Another reason our ppg might go up is because our defense may give up more points than normal, so we will have to continue to score before eventually pulling away.

"Calling off the dogs" has actually been hugely beneficial to this program, IMO, for development of depth and future stars. Frankly, I believe that is the real reason Coach Saban has always done it, not necessarily out of respect for the opponent.

I think it's just a 2 birds-1 stone sort of deal.

I don't necessarilly agree with this. One of my rare complaints about Coach Saban is that he oftentimes leaves the starters in for too long. We clearly shut down our offensive gameplan but we don't take the starters out at that point, either on offense or defense. You can take Jennings injury last year against Clemson as an example of starters probably being in a little too long. For the most part it's never really bitten us with an injury off the top of my head other than that.

Last year was the first time I can really remember where it seemed like the backup offense actually was running real plays later on in the game. Obviously, it paid huge dividends at the end of the year. Traditionally, by the time he puts the backups in on offense it's just a straight hand off game and I question how much experience the backups get from that experience. I've always desired them to actually call plays like it's a normal game and not a blowout.

I've always thought it was somewhat contradictory that Coach Saban asks the players and fans to play a full game, not look at the scoreboard, etc but the coaching staff clearly doesn't call a game with that mentality.

Having said that, I love the guy and this is just a minor nitpicking point. I think most of the development of our players occurs in practice by constantly going against great players and being worried about losing your job to the next up and comer. Last year was a welcome change as far as the use of the backups and I hope it continues into this year.

Well, it also helps that we had a QB that was ready on a basic level to execute more of the playbook than your average backup QB. I do agree with the overall point you're making, however.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Here's a thing... If we are up 21 points or more by halftime, I could see more running game in 2nd half and Jalen will play a lot. so, there's many way Saban could look at this. I think Saban wants to get the offense up and running, score as fast as much they can, and give a cushion lead enough for Jalen to get some reps in the game.. maybe mac jones as well. second, third game, we may see mac play more and Jalen will play more in 2nd half.. playing 3 games...because if things get iffy and tua struggles... Jalen could be ready to go instead of mac jones. I don't know I'm just throwing stuff out there.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

In terms of the calling off the dogs stuff, my favorite part of a game is getting to see the backups come in. That's when I can breath a sigh of relief and I can't for the life of me understand why some people only want Alabama to have close games with the starters subject to injury for four quarters.

That aside, while I do think there are some benefits strategically, there's no question part of it is simply decorum. Anyone remember Saban getting mad when Alabama scored a touchdown?

The way that you did it before last year helped only the backup o-line and RBs on offense. You didn't allow your QBs to develop at all as they were running plays that you or I could execute. With Tua, you actually ran your full offense. That is what needs to happen if you want your backup QB to be able to perform should he be required in a game.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

We've intentionally stalled some late fourth quarter drives where we could have easily tagged on another 6 several times in the last few years.

A few times, when guys have broken big runs to score late in the games CNS almost looks upset, although I know he wouldn't want guys not to execute the play.

Arguably cost AJ the Heisman in 2013.

Disagree, Jameis was on another level that year with 4,000 yards passing and 40 passing TDs.

The race would’ve been closer though, with an Iron Bowl win and a SEC title win. Remember that 99 yard TD? That was his real Heisman moment but hardly anyone outside of us remember it because of what happened minutes later.

It's more embarrassment than upset, I think - perhaps even fremdscham for the opposing head coach. He's like, "I called a half-back blast off left guard three times in a row. What else was I supposed to do?"

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

. Anyone remember Saban getting mad when Alabama scored a touchdown?

I do vaguely remember a few years ago when Saban seemed upset that we scored late in a game, when we were just running out the clock. I don't remember what team, or the score, or much more about it but that I was perplexed if he was mad at our guys, or the opponent's defensive players or coaches, or what was the deal.

Derrick Henry for 70-80 yards around the left side. I think he was a freshman or sophomore.

Saban got mad when Eddie Lacy scored on a 60 yard run in the Capital One Bowl.

Still the greatest fan-posts ever by those MSU fans. Reading their boards was truly hilarious, and not in a schadenfreude manner - those guys took that beating with great humor.

It was a Derrick Henry TD when he was a Frosh/Sophomore (don't remember which). He wasn't upset that we scored as much as you could tell he was just trying to end the clock and no one could tackle Derrick.

the last few seconds -- Saban's face

once they hit about the 10 yard line both Arkansas DB's look like they just decided "whatever..."

Yes, and Jameis got those states because Jimbo let him go wild and only rarely played his backups.

We pulled off the gas in numerous games, leading to lower stats for AJ. Agreed that winning the IB and SEC would have helped, but Saban's honor code probably hurt AJ to some extent. I don't blame Saban for his decisions, but I do think this was a consequence.

AJ should have won it at least as some sort of lifetime achievement award.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Yeah. That's probably it. At about the 48 second mark you can see Saban on the sideline raising his arms up in a "what the heck" kind of a motion. As if Saban would say "heck". He'd get suspended in a heartbeat and then go on a rant about that too. He might just buy the website. Earle would be all kicked back on a tropical beach, sipping on some fine wine, beautiful girls on each side of him tending to his beck and call of whatever pleased him. Man. What a life!

edit: Or is it Brett that owns the place? Much as Saban will pay, you'll probably all make out pretty good.
