Carroll has seen it for years. Sometimes, it still surprises him.
"I've had the fortune of coaching five NFL players and three were first-round draft picks and he fits that mold," Carroll said. "The thing about Clowney is he's 6-6 and weighs 252 pounds and he has the same athletic times and the speed and flexibility of a kid who weighs 200 pounds.
"He has a motor that will not quit. He has an absolute hatred for losing but he has this incredible dang desire to do well and to be first and to make the most tackles and to get a sack. It's just really amazing."
Clowney was limited in Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas practice last week with a shoulder injury - and he's no fan of the cold weather. But he shined in Saturday's game. He had five tackles, three sacks and drew five holding calls.
"His get-off is amazing," Rivals.com national analyst Mike Farrell said. "I've never seen a defensive line prospect get off the ball so quickly. He has a great first step, a relentless motor and an uncanny sense when it comes to finding an opening. He's also a hustler who doubles back to make plays and pursues to the opposite side of the field."
Back to the subject of the thread.
OK folks, I just want to warn against any over enthusiasm or drooling and especially any back and forth sparring about over enthusiasm or drooling in this thread.
BamaOnLine.com - Clowney can handle spotlight with ease
I don't mind discussing him, but the way some people are drooling over him it's like for a second they forget the USCe leads. I just don't want you guys to get hurt like I got hurt by Keenan. I for one will never love again and I just don't want that for you guys.
As the top-ranked recruit by Rivals, Clowney is keeping colleges in suspense leading to National Signing Day on Feb. 2. Two days after leading the South Carolina All-Stars to a 42-10 victory against the North Carolina All-Stars in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, Clowney said he has narrowed his choices to Florida State, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU and Clemson.
"I want to be close to home," said Clowney, who was chosen the Shrine Bowl's defensive player of the game after recording five tackles and three sacks, and drawing four holding penalties.
Selected Mr. Football of South Carolina, Clowney was equally as tenacious during the season, leading South Pointe to a No. 1 ranking and a 13-2 record. The Stallions lost 27-23 to Myrtle Beach in the AAA state championship game.
-Clowney will visit Alabama on the weekend of Jan. 14, Clemson on the weekend of Jan. 21 and either Florida State, Auburn or LSU on Jan. 28 (he said he's still undecided).
-South Carolina is thought to be the team to beat for his services with Alabama right there, but Clowney maintained on Friday that he was open and looking forward to his visits.
-Clowney confirmed he will make his decision on Feb. 2, National Signing Day, likely during a press conference at his school that will be televised by ESPN.
That USC loss was very telling about where they are headed IMO. This is the best year they have had since joining the SEC and they can't even win the chick-fil-a bowl while Bama is returning to national title form.this business can cut both ways. Both Spurrier -- and Richt -- can turn to recruits and say, See what we're working with here? See how we need you?
Unfortunately for us, they'd be telling the truth.
Do not tell USCe fans that. Some think this is the beginning of a dynasty and they will win the SEC next year and be in contention for the NC next year. What they fail to realize is how they got where they are this year. They won the SEC east that included a 6-7 UGA team, a 6-7 UT team and a 8-5 UF team. Not like it was the SEC west who they played to get to Atlanta. They think beating UA this year was the start of a dynasty but yet we were the only team they beat from the west and we were 4th in the west. I guess they need that to hang their hat on, but the reality is when it counted they failed to finish. UF/UGA/UT will not stay where they are at for long. CWM will get UF back, CDD will get UT back, and CKS(I know getting ahead of myself) will get UGA back. Once those programs become successful again USC will be back near the bottom. With or without J Clowney.
They won 9 games in a watered down SEC east but until they start recruiting well outside of their state that will probably be the best they ever do during a season.
Saw on ESPN's UA AA game coverage where Clowney has been dominating Cyrus:
Blackmon for six
1:02 pm ET -- Devon Blackmon hauls in a touchdown during seven-on-seven's while Clowney uses a good speed rush and was active with his hands to dominate fellow five-star Cyrus Kouandjio in one-on-ones.
Shows just how good he is.
Yeah I just read that. Great matchup anyways.I posted in the UA game the practice report. It stated that had a tie. It went both ways in their practice today regarding CK vs JC.
I have a gut feeling it's down to two schools for JC - either he stays home at USCe, or he heads for "the money is just too much" at Auburn. If we get him, i will be extremely shocked. But with Saban in charge of recruiting, we always have a chance. never say never.
