Bama vs. Texas Tech - Go Bama!!

Alabama, regardless of what some will say, had a fantastic season. Kudos to Murph who didn’t get killed by the keyboard warriors and sports talk jockeys, and produced a great year. Depending on what happens, we have all of our pitching back and most of the players on defense minus a couple. We just lost to a fat POC who had a bought and paid for roster. I’m sure Texas spent a bunch as well but they aren’t as open about it as Tech. If something isn’t done, college sports are dead. Congratulations Ladies on a great year.
Yeah, Glasgow, the true villain of college softball, lost in the championship last year, so he went to the matador club and said I need more hitters. He brought in 7 new transfers this year, 6 of whom are regular starters. It seems to be pretty well known that they were contacting players before they entered the portal. An article I read said that Tennessee transfer Taylor Pannel said she had signed a financial agreement with Tech before she entered the portal. Of the 23 players on the Tech roster, 15 started their careers at other schools. The man's not really a coach, he's a poacher. Anyone can look like a good coach if you have the best team money can buy. I really hope Texas can take them down again this year.

They have uber investors in their program. But the reason it’s so noticeable in softball is because no one spends alot of money in women’s sports. There really is no money in doing so, but they are doing it to win some national championship.

They can’t do it in baseball because there are far more teams that are super committed in baseball, and far more variables that could end your season in the regionals to spend that much. Low risk in doing in softball
They have a couple of big money guys - Cody Campbell and John Sellers - that were co-founders of the Tech Matador Club. Seller's wife played softball at Tech which is one of the reasons Tech softball gets a bunch of money.

Without looking at who has been here for 4 or 5, we may also have 1 or 2 seniors return if the NCAA approves that 5 for 5 rule this month. I guess that'll have to happen before the transfer portal gets into gear, if we're to benefit from it this year.

If that occurs it would also benefit the likes of T Tech as well. College "amateurs" are making a good bit more than professionals, at least at top tier.

Well then...hook 'em horns.

Outside of NIL funds, it seems the best investment we can make in our program to take the next step is to invest more in hitting coaching. If our program would make the effort to develop hitters we would be in much better spot.

We looked at way too many pitches last night.

I understand that kids will enter the portal for various reasons but to POACH (pay for play) from top tier teams just because you can buy them leaves a foul smell. I've been a tough critic of Murphy but I am very thankful that's NOT the program we have. I'm not upset how things ended. This team was such a welcome surprise, absolute joy to watch and easy to become invested in. I'm not "NATTY OR BUST"...I just want a highly competitive and solid program, something I felt was missing in recent years.

At the end of day, I'm incredibly proud of this team and excited for what's next!

It was my understanding that Brittany (Patrick) Mahomes was a BIG contributor to the softball program?

Here is the thing… if you are going to complain about NIL being used in this way then you might as well not watch the game or pay up because Texas teams like Houston, Tech, and Baylor are going to do it in a sport in which Texas and big money universities aren’t doing it as aggressively. It’s going to continue until some legal means stops it or they start seeing the stupidity of using this in women’s sports.

Yeah it sucks, but in the end those teams fail far more than they succeed. We didn’t lose last night because of dollars we lost because they made 2-3 more timely hits than us and had a better plan for our 1-2-3 than we did with theirs. If you want to put a more positive spin on it then you could say our team with 1/4 of their bank roll was two plays from sending them home with nothing.

Even if they win it all it will be a short lived thing because of two reasons… 1) Other teams are going to start an arms race for talent that is comparable to Tech and 2) Jordy Frahm probably stole the headline of the WCWS by revealing that she has been pitching while pregnant. My point is that I don’t think this is going to be a long term thing in softball once they see how little it really gets them financially.

You're right. I looked it up, and while it doesn't say how much, it does say the Mahomes are contributors to the Tech athletic program. Brittany Mahomes is particularly known for sending sway, custom apparel etc to the softball players.

This NIL stuff is just not what college athletics were meant to be. Can it ever be fixed?

I was at the D2 level at UNA when an assistant coach couldn’t give you a ride in their car because it was “an extra benefit.” This is full on insanity now.

To put this in perspective… Texas has a real shot at a national championship in baseball and softball this year. Given the choice of which one that Texas would rather have it’s an easy one… baseball 7 days a week and twice on Sunday.

The tournament in Omaha generates about 150 million dollars on average every year whereas the tournament in Oklahoma City generates an average of 25 million a year. Viewership for an average Men’s College World Series game is comparable to a Finals for the WCWS. The Finals in Omaha consistently outperforms the Finals in OKC. Baseball is often cited as a dying sport and Softball is often viewed as a fast and up and coming sport but still the interests and money are way higher in college baseball.

I’m not trying to dog softball, just pointing out how insane it is for these investors to pour so much money into a sport that doesn’t generate a boatload of money. Eventually people are going to stop buying into these rosters once they see winning a national championship is like winning a rec ball trophy for the average college sports fan. It’s not going to sell merchandise, raise interest in the school, or have these massive payoffs. Women’s sports are still very niche and closer to amateur sports than men’s. I think this problem might eventually solve itself once they realize it doesn’t pay out.
