With all of the new documents becoming available in the last week, it's been a tough time to be an Alabama fan. Conspiracies, sting operations, setups - it's apparent that there was a real mess in Memphis.
We know now that the SEC was at best complicit and at worst a conspirator in this slimy setup. We know that Fat Fulmer had his pudgy self involved in the plot as well - and that there were a few other SEC coaches involved too. There is little question now that there was an organized effort to get Alabama in trouble with the disgustingly hypocritical NCAA.
But, and I hope this doesn't ruffle any feathers, the bottom line is that the evidence supports the notion that Logan Young was not playing by the rules. Had we not "taken the bait," this whole sordid affair could have most likely been avoided.
Don't think I'm excusing what's been done to us - I'm not! It does pain me to see folks screaming for the University to get involved in the Gallion lawsuit. That would be a tragic mistake. The NCAA has proven that they will stop at nothing to selectively prosecute those who offend them. Besides, it's not like we are going to get any scholarships or heartbreaking losses returned. All the University would accomplish is angering the NCAA.
We know the pain that this thing has caused. But now, it's a bit of a win-win at this point for the University - if Gallion loses, they were not involved and the University loses nothing. If Gallion wins and exposes the NCAA/SEC plot and players involved, then the University wins some of it's dignity back in the court of public opinion.
I don't want all of this to "go away." I want everyone involved in this sleazy plot to be exposed. We have a very bright future, and despite the NCAA's best efforts, GREAT days are ahead for this football program, this University, and its' supporters.
We have a great young coach who is recruiting well and doing things the right way. We have an AD who has raised millions of dollars and invested in much-needed facility upgrades. We have a great core of young players ready to restore Alabama to its rightful place as a yearly contender. We have the seniors of 2003 and 2004, who were wronged by men they'll never meet and, despite putting their heart and soul into this, will be counted as part of the worst seasons in our history.
Let us not forget the sacrifices that these men have made on behalf of Alabama football over the past few years. These men have been through more than we fans can ever realize. Let's get behind our guys and stay behind our guys! The unified support of the Alabama faithful will go a long way in getting this program back on track.
Give to the building fund - even if it's only a $12/month investment in Crimson Tradition (which is worth every penny I might add!). More importantly, give your support to the coaches, administrators, and players. These guys have poured blood and sweat into this program, they deserve our support. We fans will not agree with every decision they make, but we can rest assured that the people who have stuck with Alabama through this fiasco are Crimson through and through. And that's good enough to earn my support. I can only hope it's good enough to earn yours.
