Re: "cheating website" Ashley Madison hacked, 36 Million users to be outed

The head of the Louisiana GOP was "doing oppositional research" yeah, ok

because, you know when you run a law firm you get your law clerks to research cheating websites under your name, with your credit card

Actually, This one may possibly be true. If they specialize in divorce, and had a female client who suspected her spouse of cheating and maybe using this site, then joining it could be an effective and easy way to find out...

they do family law http://cdjslaw.com/practice-areas/ so maybe. Still don't know why he'd use his info and not a staffer so I'm still officially doubting but his excuse is at least plausible

He's putting the "family" in "family values."

Reminds me of when Steve Garvey knocked up three different women at the same time. He had a sneaking desire to become "father of his country."

Re: "cheating website" Ashley Madison hacked, 36 Million users to be outed

Sad thing is that, if these TV jerks go in front of a camera and weep genuinely enough, they will be forgiven by a huge slice of their donating audience...
That's sort of my point.

I remember when Jimmy Swaggart got caught (the first time). I was a new Christian at that point in time, but the funny thing is that when I actually found out the back story behind Swaggart, it made me more appalled than anything I can think of.

(For those who don't know the specifics, long story short: Swaggart had a rivalry going with another TV preacher named Marvin Gorman. Jimmy found out that Marvin had been fooling around in the wrong pew and notified the Assemblies of God denomination about it and stuck a fork in him the day before Gorman was going to sign a huge big loan to take his ministry "national." Gorman lost his church, his TV deal, and filed for bankruptcy. Swaggart hid behind all kinds of pious religious talk. Gorman then found out Jimmy was getting it on with a hooker and set up a camera to catch him. Unlike Jimmy, Gorman gave Swaggart a chance to expose his own sin. After waiting four months, Gorman went to KC and gave the AoG the photographs, which the media picked up.

I side with fundamentalist preacher John MacArthur, who preached a sermon on Swaggart and said, "I tend to believe if (his) repentance was genuine, he'd have confessed it last October and not when the press found out about it last week."

And Jimmy, of course, was holding a higher hand than Gorman because he had given $12 million to the denomination - which only further validates why a lot of people reject Christianity. (I make no defense of this at all).

reminds me of my favorite sports related bumper sticker ever, when the allegations came out he was playing for the Padre's

sticker read "Steve Garvey is not my Padre"

When this story was in the press, there were bumper stickers that said "Steve Garvey is not my Padre."

Edit: Dang it, Jon...

Re: "cheating website" Ashley Madison hacked, 36 Million users to be outed

I forgot which news outlet, but one of them was quoting some supposed expert who said that many of the addresses are totally fictional and the reason Alabama seemed to have the most cheaters by far, while MS was in 49th, was because Alabama was the first state in the alphabet. That seemed likely to me...
The husband of one of my wife's friends is listed. I'm not saying he's guilty, but the address is correct.

again please remember that AM does not verify email so someone could have used his email. Up to you to decide how likely that is

Garvey was quite the artful Dodger in that whole thing, too.

I don't know what he was, but he sure was a player. He wasn't striking out, he was getting past first base quite a bit.

and playing the field.

Yeah, I was just saying that out of many fictional addresses in Alabama, I knew of one that wasn't.
I wouldn't know that if it wasn't for my wife telling me. I've met the couple a few times, but I don't really know them. It's his rat-killing, not mine.

I'll place a warning in the title. It's a defamation issue involving the site. There were probably not only fictional addresses, some may have been planted as revenge. Aside from confession by the guilty party or being a well-connected PI, I fail to see how anyone can "know" with certainty which ones are real...

I don't see the "revenge" angle. Someone would have had to know in advance that the site would be hacked and then released. I can see using an email address of someone you know and don't like for chuckles though

I meant the latter and then "leaking" it. It wouldn't be necessary to foresee the hacking...

yep. People do that with Facebook or Twitter already as misinformation or to cause problems.

Re: "cheating website" Ashley Madison hacked, users outed (DO NOT POST LIST OR LINK!)

The list I saw had the amount each subscriber had paid. Most of the amounts were quite high to be set ups, in my opinion. But I'm cheap.
Some of the emails were obviously fake, or set up just for that purpose, but others were clearly work emails, etc.

I don't doubt that, but I don't want to risk a libel suit by someone who was set up...

Re: "cheating website" Ashley Madison hacked, users outed (DO NOT POST LIST OR LINK!)

Just a couple of random thoughts about the registration process:

1. Alabama has the most users. One theory being it's the first state listed. Wouldn't most want to find users nearby if they wanted to actually do anything other than online talking?
2. Fake e-mails sound great, but no user thought about the website sending a "verify your account e-mail?" I can see no one at AM thinking about sending those since they only cared about the money. Users, OTOH, should have expected it.
