CNNSI Predicts Saban to the NFL Again, Kirby Smart the next great coach

I think they are having a little fun to pass the time before the season kicks off but in this article they predict that in the next decade CUM will "retire" again and that CNS will return to the NFL. I don't know about CUM but I don't think one ounce of Saban wants to go to the NFL again.
They also list Kirby Smart as the next super coach that few people have heard of yet...in the same way 10 years ago we had not heard of Urban Meyer, Bo Pelini or Chris Petersen. The good stuff is on the 2nd page.

Enjoy the read. It is actually pretty good to remember how things change in a single decade.

Saban's next move will be retirement, unless we find away to force him out...

And as far Kirby Smart is concerned, I like the guy, but after Perkins and DuBose, I want a proven winner to succeed Saban. Not an unknown. I'd rather not go through another decade of coaching misfortunes again.

Well said, you hit the nail on the head!

Tennessee's big break, however, will come a few years down the road when Florida coach Urban Meyer prematurely retires (again) and Alabama's Nick Saban returns to the NFL (again).

So let me get this straight. Tennessee will be a big success story this decade, but only because Meyer will retire and Saban will go back to the NFL? That's great logic. Did these guys take peyote before they wrote this article?

My money will be on CKS being the next HC at his alma mater if CMR gets fired at UGA after the season.
Or Will Muschamp. Something tells me though that the LSU job will come open before the UGA job. Either way, If LSU or UGA comes open, I think Muschamp would take either one.

:BigA: Is Muschamp really that good? Texas had the # 1 rushing defense but was shreaded by our running game! As a head coach I would take Kirby over Will anyday, but neither can compare to Saban! So I can only hope that Saban will be our head coach for a long time because I seriously doubt that we will enjoy this kind of success after he leaves! There are the elite coaches but few of them that can be compared to Coach Bryant but Saban is one of them! I will just try to enjoy this moment in time!

I need a job like that one, where I can say anything and not have to back it up with any data or reasoning. Yes, somewhere in the next decade (later, not sooner) CNS will probably go back to the NFL -- as a television commentator. He will not coach forever -- cannot at the pace at which he goes. But, until he goes, he's ours...and we are still dancing in the streets.

My vote for the next HC at Bama is the person who leads, coaches and recruits as much likeSaban as possible. Even then I would require them to spend 3 months initially and one month every year after that (off season of course) hanging out with Dr. Kevin Elko, agree to wake up daily at 4am and eat Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies.

And his defensive backfield kept our passing game on Incompletion Island. Plus they got more sacks against us than any other team. I think they weren't successful against our rushing game because A) they haven't faced a rushing attack of our caliber, they're built to rush the pass and B) Mack Brown tends to recruit smaller speedier guys instead of hole-pluggers and run-stoppers. Brown wants athletes that will get into the backfield, not guys that will hold the line. Muschamp is pretty good...I like Kirby more, but he's still good.

Think this might have had a little to do with GMac's 3 broken ribs? In any event, we showed we would have a hard time passing and they still couldn't stop us from running. What does that tell you?

I've watched the BCSCG several times on my computer and really tried to pay attention to the sacks: what situation, protection, route calls, Texas' call. I think they defended our passing game very well considering that they were basically playing us for the run all game.

The very first sack was on what looked to be a screen. It's hard to tell because the play was blown up almost immediately off the snap. I believe Valchos or Johnson released their man a little too soon which put GMac into an immediate retreat and a linebacker legally knocked over Ingram which made taking a sack the only option.

The second sack was a coverage sack. We went to our bread-n-butter hitch patterns and nobody came open until the defense was on top of McElroy. Just good bump coverage to throw off the timing for what is usually a quick, low-risk completion.

The third sack was a rare fire zone blitz call where James Carpenter ended up blocking no one when the DL dropped and the linebacker rushed.

The fourth sack was another coverage sack but it was on crossing routes against man coverage...another situation where we should have had an advantage but were defended well.

The fifth sack was a well played defense of the bootleg game. They had one too many rushers on the boot side and immediately dropped McElroy coming out of the boot.

Texas defended our passing game very well. Some of it was simply that Texas was well scouted and prepared for our comparatively simple passing game to what they typically prepare for in the Big-XII. Some of it is that we got ourselves into predictable situations offensively. Ultimately, despite being well prepared for our offense...they were not physically capable of winning in the run game more downs than not. They really tried to take away the inside zone from us but simply got a heavy helping of the outside zone stretch which was lethal because it allowed Julio to clean out his man coverage DB and hit for huge plays.

Certainly, it would have been interesting if McCoy was uninjured. We certainly would have needed the pass game more and they seemed to have it properly diagnosed. Of course, like I pointed out, passing more could have helped the simplistic nature of our passing game which made it easier to defend for Texas.

Your analysis is brilliant. Your conclusion is befuddling. :conf3:

Well, it's like this: we tended to only pass in obvious situations when they did defend the first or second down run well. It allowed them to focus on the pass and they did a good job of defending our offense's pet plays. Gilbert's injury made us more predictable just as it did for Texas' offense. Why risk throwing downfield when you don't think they can consistently move the ball and score without you giving them good field position or scores off turnovers?

If the game had stayed "normal" I don't think Texas would have jammed our receivers every play or stay in phase on crossing routes every time. I don't think they would have fooled our OL's protection calls every time nor would they guess on the bootleg and successfully defend it every time either. Texas seemed to have our passing game diagnosed but it was a small sample size that was mostly taken from obviously second or third and long passing situations. Our whole gameplan changed after the first series for Texas...on both sides of the ball.

It seems like our coaches were prepared to line up Julio at tight end a good bit in this game to help him get free releases. It worked successfully on the only pass to him when he lined up at TE. We never really saw that again until that bootleg sack in the 3rd quarter where they were actually rolling away from Julio's side. All of that was thrown out the window and they went to base personnel and formation calls for the majority of the game...no use to get cute or deceptive in their eyes.

My conclusion is that Texas wasn't going to guess right on the call or have perfect coverage every play and Alabama's passing offense wasn't exactly being used outside of obvious situations which are easier for the defense to handle. If Colt played the whole game, we would have been more balanced and the passing game on the whole would have probably looked better.

Count me as one who isn't bowled over by Muschamp. Right now, between the two, I would pick Kirby Smart over Muschamp. I also believe the LSU job will be open before the UGA HC job and Muschamp would be a prime candidate for LSU. I realize Muschamp was on CNS's staff at LSU, but since then who would you rather have tutor you, Tuberville and Mack Brown or Nick Saban?
